Man this has to be one of the best car vlogs. Stripped down an entire RB in a 20 minute video and made it look seamless, no overwhelming information that non car guys wont understand. Really hit the nail on the head with this one mate, really looking forward to more of these :)
Agreed quality vlogs, we need more projects I can’t wait
Who watches engine strips when you're not a car guy

@@Roo0ooD Me too! This legend makes stuff interesting to watch
Benny I gotta say I am a huge car guy and watching you go from rust content to car content is awesome. Keep it up bro!
Y35w🎉ree
I used to drift an RB25 swapped s14 and got the exact oiling issue you are speaking off, at least you caught yours during tuning we blew the bottom end out on track. Either way keep smashing it mate, by the end of it the car will be a legend.
yep oil starved, there is a channel dedicated to stripped engines exactly like u did -- "idocars" where u can get an education on the effects of oil starvation. The engine had had a hard life, it didnt look well cared for. no signs of detonation in the chambers, the headgasket looked bad, to crack like that i rekon it overheated at some stage
daym that sucks man did you ever revive the car?
I know nothing about cars but this was a compelling watch.
Unfortunately this is just the risk you take buying second hand engines. Didnt swing in your favour this time but let it be a learning experience for yourself and your viewers. Very well put together video mate. As a rust and car enthusiast i am really enjoying this change. Keep it up 👍
Such an underrated UA-camr

I'm more of a muscle head myself, but and engine is an engine. Sick vid Surge. Remember these 2 things when it comes to engines.
1 - Second hand is only as good as the day before it fucks up.
2 - If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing !
dont touch the oil restrictors just get one of the rear head drains that goes into the welsh plug on the back of the head and shell be tip top after that
As a previous owner of an R34 GTT, I’m loving this skyline content. But you have done really well mate with being able to go into detail about your process but also at the time keeping it quick and fresh. Keep it up legend 🤙🏻
Hey man, my guess is she's had a failure previously from heat, bearings were either not checked or re used. Good luck, love the car content.
To fix the rbs oiling problems you can go a few ways depending on budget and end goals you can put oil restrictors in the block to stop the oil from filling up the cylinder head another way to tackle that issue is to add a rear head drain which uses one of the welsh plugs and helps that problem another thing that helps a lot is a sump with extra oil capacity
Dry sumping the engine will fix all the oil problems with the rb but it is a costly endeavour
crank collar mod and cylinder head oil drain kit with a oil sump girdle and your pretty sweet. further than that you could upgrade the oil pump gears an that but thinking about it you probably want to keep more oil in the pan. cylinder number 6 is obviously know for heat soaking as well so thats something probably influencing #6 to go like that. motor was probably flexed on or ran lean for too long an oil drain issue seals the deal completely. heat will make oil coke up everywhere as well so regular oil changes are a must if your going through constant heat cycles an limiter bashing heaps
Man im not a huge car guy but you just pulled me in for 20 whole mins and im hooked. these vlogs are fricken awesome, keep up the amazing work brother
RB oil issue was exactly my gut feeling when I saw the previous video. Not sure if I should be happy that I was right, or sad for your loss. Either way looking forward to the future updates.
I'm not a car guy and know very little about cars but for some reason I enjoy these videos. I watched another channel rebuild an old pickup truck from scratch and that was fun to watch too.
i typically don’t put my 100% attention on most yt vids but you’re doing a hella good job
love the fucking ending! i think i haven't been that excited by a cliffhanger before
Spool Headdrain, spool oil pump gears, the crankshaft you need to get it grub screwed, the nose welded up and have a solid square piece woodruff key cut into the cranknose. Cranknose is very soft, ive seen many rb cranks of all generations spin the woodruff keys off the nose.
** restrictors for the oil galleries in the block is essential too btw
When you hit rock bottom on a 25 so decide to go all in and take on the final boss of oiling issues hahaha
Mad videos mate, only just came across them 🤘🏼
Please keep them coming, I thoroughly enjoy the narration, the vibes, the visuals, etc.. it's been a while since I have enjoyed vlog style videos !
Hmmmmmmmmm looks like you found a decayed jackpot with all those metal frags
I'm so glad you started this channel! Been watching every single one of your videos for years and have always had an interest in your cars. (Especially this r33) . Keep up the amazing work! This is some absolutely fire content!
Honestly I know your a gamer and all. But no word of a lie best car/ vlog channel I have ever watched!
Half way into the video I'm thinking you should get an RB26.Glad you got one.Awesome channel.
Love the style of video. Very interesting to watch. I see you being very successful. The added sounds, and explanations. I did hope to see a glance of the pistons, but after watching more, it didn't really matter. As a mechanic, there wasn't anything triggering, except for the mess haha.
Sadly he doesn't know what he's doing so will teach people the wrong thing.
Rb oiling issues are pretty easily fixed, oil restrictors in the top of the block done by a machine shop or Franklin head drain is the best option for them. Tap the rear welch plug in the head out then tap two M6 holes in the back of the head (use machine shop) then it screws right into the back of the head, and you can run it back to the sump, works on rb26s just needs another fitting, the cheapest way to conquer the issue. Loving the build keep going it’s worth it in the end.
bennys back! these videos are pretty sick and that teaser at the end got me anticipated for whats next
Real bummer man. Had a bearing go on my Neo motor and just finished the rebuild. Thats the route Id go rather than using a running second hand motor.
But keen to see where you go with this.
Barra next?
But yeah, a second hand engine refreshed/rebuilt by a reputable shop is the other option...
The quality of your videos are so freakin' dope mate. All I can say is, I cannot wait for the next video!
mate it’s 5am but love the shit keep it going
I know this seems weird, but this is the first video I've found of your channel, and I want to thank you for having ears and mixing your music and voice over at the same level. It's awful having to turn the volume of a video up to hear the presenter, only to be deafened by music a minute later.
You accomplished a great mix, and I didn't need to adjust my volume once. Plenty of channels with 20x your subs still make this mistake, and I can't stand watching them. It was so good I paused the video and spent the time to tell you about it. I really appreciate it.
Good on ya, great vid, had an awesome time.
Go on benny mate, 30k subs and growing
I hope the algorithm likes you 🤞
I absolutely love the rust soundtrack in the background also the code lock sound at 8.14
Yeah, I had a #6 ringland blown in my Rb25det before I got it. I had to take it all apart and let the machine shop check everything. I will say the RB is expensive to rebuild if you are a regular guy like me and have no connections. I am excited to see this build!!
100% not the tuners fault, they are constantly checking fuel ratios/ boost oil etc to make sure it’s not going too far on the dyno. I think the engine starting spewing out the oil wouldn’t of helped but it’s probably down to just being sat for soo long before you bought it. I built a car in 2016 and didn’t use it often enough and took it to the dyno last week and it blew the bottom end, even though I did an oil flush/ engine service etc it just does it no good to be unused. I’ll put a video out on that in the next few weeks. Did a dyno day on my Mk1 back in April and went through what needs to be done on a fresh engine build, like wearing in the piston rings on the dyno etc. maybe worth a watch.
Bro, I am going through exactly the same thing with my R33. When does next video come up? Keep going strong!
/greetings from Sweden
Honestly some of the best car content on UA-cam RN keep the good stuff up bloke.
This is some gourmet content I'm loving it and I'm not that big on rbs, could tell pretty much straight away the state of that cylinder head was a red flag and it's actually amazing it survived the 280kw tune the first time.
Big dog forged bottom end and you'll be hissing for years to come.
My best advice is you have to do everything by the book and spec. Measure everything and go out the reading. Bearing clearance. Crank size and bore size. And best oil suite your clearance.
Oi Benny boy! I rarely ever comment on UA-cam vids so let me start off by saying I adore your content. Either rust or the vlogs, shit is top notch. Keep up the great work and ol girl will be up and runnin soon and I can’t wait to see her in action! Cheers brotha!
Get an Aeroflow oversized sump as a starting point, then you can either get the return lines in the block bored out to a bigger size, or add an extra head drain.
Watching this Ben, Makes me itchy to finish my R32, Great content man!
Amazing content Surge, my first car was a 1990 gts-t type m skyline I bought in 98 so I’ll always have a soft spot for these cars, currently in a 20 quantum grey A4 Audi but I still see myself back in an old school skyline one of these days, and although you’ve had problems with the 25 I couldn’t help but laugh at the 26 cover plate at the end. Can’t wait to see what you do mate.
I don't know, to me that tuner was an absolute champ, knew what he was talking about and dumbed it down pretty well I think. I think the oiling issue with the is probably what knocked that RB, especially since because you were at a tuner and the rb25 has baffling in the oil pan there is no way oil slosh would be the problem. I also think that the engine wasn't making enough power to shatter the oil pump and shear the snout on the crank. Fantastic videos keep it up
That engine has a lot of heat fatigue in it and a fair amount of sludge build-up I had this happen to my engine which resulted in me having to do are engine rebuild Nissan told me that it was due to the previous owner not changing the engine oil when it was meant to be changed which resulted in excessive heat because the oil wasn't doing what it was mean to be doing due to lack of oil changes as for the sludge build-up that is due to mixing different brand oils once you find are brand oil that works for your car stick with it do not change, I ended doing the rebuild my self with are few mates we all had to learn as we went because we all had very little experience with rebuilding engines but we took our time and got it done now she is as good as gold I hope you get this beast back on the road brother best of luck 👍
Benny, please never stop making these
I was excited for a barra sawp at the end... but UPAA THE RB26
Good luck with it man. I had to go through the same shit with my Skyline.
Never clicked on a video faster than this one. Hate to say it, better than a rust video.
that ending... i will now be stuck to the edge of my seat waiting for the next vid
Man dude that sucks so bad! Awesome video tho my guy! Great editing, music and story! I cant wait to see more videos!
Bugga mate ! I'd say she was flogged out before you brought her. Bang on with the Oil Issue the RB has aswell.
Whatever you use, if you go through the engine, use fel pro gasket sets.
Very much worth testing the new RB’s block, head, crank, valves and cams before spending any money on parts. Those stock parts can USUALLY last pretty well, but, the pistons, rings, rods and EVERY bearing are 100% should replace if you’re looking at flogging it/high power. They’re points with the most heat and wear plus there’s no harm in some forged pistons/rods over 100k plus km stockies. All gaskets (ESPECIALLY RUBBER) should be checked and replaced. I mean a full engine gasket/seal kit might cost you $200 but one faulty cracked gasket will lead you a lifetime of leaks that you’ll never find. Upgraded oil pump is a must as you said and upgraded oil lines too. New AN lines are always safe. And look at installing an oil cooler too, it’s literally unscrew oil filter, sandwich plate on, filter back on, AN lines on, hook AN to cooler after pre filling the cooler and mounting the cooler, which they’re pretty small so can be easy. It’s just maintenance shit before power, you can build most of your power from your boost and it can be done safely if your internal dare upgraded
I was about to say buy an RB26 instead, and my man showed the RB26 at the end . Nice one mate, hope this one is gonna better, than the old one. :D
Lets go. Cant wait for the 26 to go in. Best engine. Dont leave any stone unturned for this one
For the price of RB26s these days and the cost associated to build it - I'd recommend taking advantage of it being out of the car and go through it properly before installation.
One important first step will be to identify whether you have an early Rb26 out of a 32 or a later version out of a 33/ 34.
The earlier (32) models have a short nose crank which limits the contact patch with the oil pump gear - this is corrected on later models.
I'd suggest that if you have an early model you go ahead and look into things like a crank collar.
You'll need to get the crank machined to fit the collar so that'll drop you down the rabbit hole.
There are a ton of nuances oil pumps, restrictors, drain backs etc which you'll want to consider while are in there so good luck, I'll keep an eye on your videos.
@nyc33skyline for my current build.
Don't need crank collar just get a good gear.
hey mate awesome video to watch, also I personally suggest adding on 2 extra drainage hoses about dash 10 sized. from the lower of the 2 cam shaft covers/tappit covers, down to the sump. also baffle the sump
“I got something else up my sleeve” perhaps the slickest thing I’ve heard on UA-cam
This channel is so underrated rn
Great Video Surge, I'd say hasn't had regular oil changes with that discolouration. Always sucks finding shiny stuff in your oil but means while it's open put some forged internals and cams Yew 👍 Good work looks like ya got a decent crew too. Always helps to have mates!
nice vid...im pretty sure you have something on your sleeve...cant wait! as for my opinion...ill just give up the car and search for a more practical option. skylines are pretty rare nowadays all the parts / labor etc are hefty. thats what i did and now im ok with old school Mitsubishi Lancer. greetings from Manila!
ahh man so exciting to see the 26 going in, personally im jealous i cant have on in mine.
However, id suggest looking over at the guys at Motive Video, huge knowledge bomb for RBs. It'll give you a good thought of where you want your car to be and what to look for.
Not every man off the street could hit up andrew from motive for some RB advice but benny is not some random so i have to agree 100%. plus andrew(motive video )probably knows chris from shockworks (the guy who wandered in for cheeky peek) so benny might have an "in".
I just finished upgrading my own 33 goes in for first tune on Monday this makes I’m so nervous
Tbh if you want to solve the oiling issue, build another RB and you like the 25 platform. Take advantage of the RB25 head and use an RB30 block they are both compatible and can be used together as the galleries match up! You get the bonus of more displacement and a stronger bottom end with the benefit of double overhead cams and the 25 head cheap way to make more power without spending the money on forged internals. If you can find an A8 stamped RB30 block they come factory with forged internals and we’re the blocks used in the VL turbo commodores
Good shit brother, can't wait to watch the next update.
I just watched a engine get torn down I don’t know why but I kinda liked it 😂👍 keep up the great videos benny boi
Loving this content, great mix of elements. Will be watching👍
RB’s had the Oiling issue where they pumped all the Oil to the Head, But the small Oil ports can get blocked, and don’t flow enough, so they can’t return the oil back to the Bottom End fast enough, and it all gets stuck up in the Head, and unfortunately Doing Bottom ends. Can’t wait for the RB26 Bröther
This is such a good time to watch keep up the car vlogs!
I wonder if the oiling issues is due to the oil galleries and where theyre set within the block.
I don’t even watch you other channel but these vids go crazy
loving this new channel mate!
it sucks having to start again man, feel for you. thankfully you have some good mates to help you out
in my experience compression tests on used motors are a good starting point but don't solidify the motor as being good. The heat during operation could of opened the crack on cylinder 6. this can have gas escape to cylinder 5. 5 and 6 are at different cycles. 5 could have extra gas coming in while at bottom dead center that puts extra pressure on the 5 rod. This can shake the whole crank. That shaking or extra vibration can cause the bearings to get chewed up considerably in a short period of time. I dont think running it with the leak for 3 seconds would cause all that damage. An engine is a huge air pump at the end of the day. if it has any leaks between the cylinders its as good as done.
Oil aeration is a big killer of bearings on the dyno. Seen it with some higher revving engines in a OEM testing. Other things is oil temperature the crush ability of the oil is significantly reduced.
Sadly the oiling issues are a major for these rb’s. Been there, done that on my rb26. If you want to give it the best chance you can - a better oil pump (prp spline drive for example), bigger sump, head drain kit, oil restrictors, sump baffle, and hypertune rocker cover baffles should help drastically. Thats the route I took!
Editing on this is awesome 👌
that hotline miami soundtrack at 2 mins got me vibing hard
Most badass RB26 reveal I've ever seen.
love the ending ! absolutely fascinating
Awesome video, awesome content, keep it up bruz itll all be worth it when your hittin full noise when shes got a new heart 👌
And love the content benny so much has changed since the rust video days good too see all the cars and u building up ur dream fleet keep grinding ya legend
I normally dont comment but I must say I'm really enjoying your vlogs Benny-boy! Keep them coming :)
Hope things go better with new engine buddy, great vid keep it up.
What some people do to fix the oil issue is plug some of the flow to the head from the block, i believe adamlz has a video on this about his r34
Next rb get a drain feed from the back of the head to the block theres a welsh plug on 25 heads that you can tap out and put a fitting onto it
The only way to spin bearings without visible detonation on the piston is to run a high octane fuel like e85 and push timing beyond mbt. No experienced tuner will run that much timing, much less after one single run. This wear has been happening for some time now and that just happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back. If you're going to play with rbs you need an oil pressure gauge as a bare minimum. But ideally you would have an ecu capable of oil pressure protection strategies.
Bro you need to get yourself to summernats!!!!!! The biggest burnout comp ever
Hey mate, commented about the need for a second oil drain tapped into the head in your other videos. RB has issues as you've discovered, and usually people just add a bigger pump and no extra drain which makes it worse too. Best thing to do? rematch between the 2JZ and Barra boys and go with what wins
Seeing how brown the engine was on the inside, it just wasn't maintained properly to begin with. Should be nice and silver-y inside. Just like my 187k Rb25. Hopefully you'll get back soon!
I agree I have had many I6 engines toyota1jz 2jz, BMW n54, Ford Barra. Most looked clean inside and had no problems except the N54 and it spin a rod bearing. I found black carbon in every oil passage and every oil filter no matter the duration I swapped it out. IMO the black carbon junk can clog oil passages and contribute to exasperated bearing wear.
@@Nathan-gj8ch agrees
We need more frequent uploads mate, good shit
I’m a bit late to the party but dude sick videos you do it well.
I am so loving this series man keep them coming
babe wake up new surge car vlogs
Hey bro if you do want to fix the oiling issue a company in nz do a head drain they are called Franklin engineering, ran my 25det neo with it. Also maybe get a extended sump. All ways to combat the rbs nasty oiling problem. Hope you see this mate
BARRA SWAP IT!
I thought you were going to cut to a 2jz at the end lol.
Great video, Mr Surge.
Get a good rb25det factory turbo engine pref unopened low KMs, try get compression test and you'll be sweet use 10w40 good brand oil, don't miss services. Head shouldn't fill with oil unless your keeping it near limiter for a while and you'd know because oil would be coming out of the catch can
