So true my friend! However I remember in school we had Dutch, German, French and English on the same day. By the end of the day you couldn't process a damn thing. We basically learned 4 languages not very well. Learn more about languages and culters but for the love of all that is holy be at least selective. Exposure however is good.

Exactly! My niece is half finnish and half latina, and in addition she learned english from UA-cam-videos when she was 4. Now They live in Norway so that another language she learned.
So, finnish, english, spanish, norwegian, and she wants to learn sign language as well.

First: So, the step mother has turned into a real friend and supporter of the son. She has developed a real rapport with the boy, encouraging him to discover and learn about a new culture. Well, BooHoo! The Ex has no right to mess with what goes on in the step mom's home. The son is gaining a more in depth education and complete acceptance by step mom and her family. No judge will shut that down!
Finally, both Moms have put the kids FIRST! And that's the best, because it leads to healthy relationships and growth.

@@ItsMeBarnaby Well considering if they’re in the U.S. learning Spanish will be great. The biggest cities and states have so many Spanish speakers and plus if the kid gets a great career it’s he’ll already have two different languages down before higher education. It’s a win-win situation, he won’t be any worse for knowing Spanish.

I live in bi-lingual country, it's compulsory to learn both (ofc nowadays I have almost forgotten most of 2nd one because I have never need it and its only spoken by 5%, and majority of them has so bad accent that I cannot understand with what I have been taught). Then we start English, usually 3rd grade, some even earlier. Plenty kids another language on 7th grade. Usually French or German. Maybe Russian or Spanish, depending on school. I chose German. Then at university I started Spanish. That eventually failed because I got sick and class advantaged quite fast (and Spanish was taught in English :P)

@@duckeh1952 Finland by any chance? I'm an English teacher in Finland and English used to start on 3rd grade but now it starts on the 1st grade. You can add new language on 5th (or 4th, not sure these days because everything changes), Swedish comes in the picture on 6th grade as mandatory language and then usually you can pick one more in junior high (not every school offers this). So by the end of junior high you can have Finnish + 4 foreign languages if you choose to take every possibility to start a new language. I only did English and Swedish and took up French in high school. I don't know almost any Swedish anymore. After school the only time I used it was when I had to order meatballs at an Ikea in Sweden. I can read it very slowly and understand enough words to get the idea what the text means but I can't form sentences anymore.

I love that the stepmom refers to her stepson as her son! Plus, that long heart-to-heart talk made a difference. I’m thinking that it opened the door to the mother seeing stepmom as not being the enemy but rather as someone who loves her son and only wants the best for him. If all continues on this path, they all have a brighter future.

I am so interested in how the ex took a complete 180. She probably got a hard reality check seeing this wasn't going to change and maybe her kid started to resent her as well as the husband since she put in so much energy to ruin their lives. But overall, what a wholesome story.

My adult stepsons just got married I walked in both their weddings along with their mother with absolutely no conflict because while the boys were growing up all the adults in their lives put their interests first. It seems simple, but as this post proves, so many people have trouble with it. I recently represented my husband's ex and her sisters on a matter and because of the the appearance of a conflict of interest I had everyone sign a Waiver. 1st Story. OP not the A hole. Like it or not. He is your step child, you and your husband have just as much say as your step child's mother and step father. Their estranged relationship is her fault for lying to her child for years. A sure way for her to drive and even bigger wedge between her and her son is to deny him things he has grown interested in and loves. If she wants to mend her relationship with her son, it is up to her to do so, and she has to do that be regaining his trust, that does not include trying to force you to distance yourself from him to make it easier on her. IT is not fair to you or him. She wants to give him a reason to resent you for pulling back, do not give her that.
Added after update. I am glad she has realized her previous attitude was going to give nothing positive to this situation, and would likely do nothing but cause more distance between herself and her son. It's great you all came to what has become a very healthy family dynamic.

the change occurred after a conversation between the two mothers
i think everything ultimately revolves around money
mom will still be a "good" mom, and stepmother will support both of her children
if it is German, then the Germans are opportunists and know that money does not grow on trees

Nta teaching a child another language. I would welcome my child learning another language. This is her insecurity issue. Children are extremely in tune with all environment good and bad. Mothers aura is dark and the poor child is being walled and not a good environment to be able to express himself.

First: The mother should be happy for her son getting all the love from his stepmother and his dad, that is a really big thing considering stepmother could have been so much the opposite. Why would anyone wish to hold their child back from all they are doing for him. My first thought was they should try inviting the mom along on the trip, they did, along with her husband, he sounds ok. She is blinded by jealousy and anger, it will not bind her son to her, just drive him away. What a abrilliant ending 🎇

I don't trust bio mom's sudden change of heart. She probably thinks OP will lose interest in her son once the baby is born, so she's setting herself up to be the "good guy" once OP has her "real baby" and loses interest in the boy. (Where else would he get the idea he'll lose his bedroom to OP's "real baby"?) When that doesn't happen, the ex will resume her old ways, maybe even worse.

When I was young, my father's mother refused to allow my dad to speak German to us and to allow my mother to speak Czech to us. I could have been tri-lingual. She said all those languages would make us kids tongue-tied. I actually also took Latin 5 years and another foreign language in college. If you speak another language, please teach it to your kids. If you speak another language, please teach it to your kids. They will become more valuable employees and make more money.

  • @prowlandsasuke

Nta in first story, the son is not his mothers property. While yes at times parents have right and a say with what there children do. Learning another language is no way harming the son. He can make those decisions, it's what hes interested in. Especially if hes an older child. Children get to make decisions too without their parents say so. His mother has no right in stopping him. He is his own person should be able to have some say in what he does. Also the kids father is okay with it.

I'm not crazy about OP's husband telling her to be more sensitive to the ex. She's his responsibility, not OP's. As for that update, frankly it sounds too good to be true. OP wears non-seethrough briefs, female who didn't even went into the pool, still became uncomfortable? A) Why is she looking at OP's covered neither regions if it makes her uncomfortable? B) I know that they're still sold, but what are the chances for that a guy asked to change into swimwear, actually owns boxer shaped swimwear instead of something more revealing, like Speedos?

    STORY #1
NTA. OP is allowed to speak whatever language she wants in her house. Apart from that, being multilingual will give stepson a big advantage in the workplace.
The kid doesn't have a good relationship with husband's ex? Gee, I wonder why? Maybe it's because she only had him to hurt her ex and thus only sees the boy as a weapon? Maybe because she kept him away from his father for years? OP is more of a mother to this kid than the bio-mother ever was.
    UPDATE
What? Did a kindly doppelgänger replace husband's ex? This sounds like a happy ending, but I'd still be wary.

  • @TechnoMageB5

It's not just learning the language. It's learning another culture, perspective, way of doing things. As someone raised in America by Serbian parents, it was somewhat confusing when I was young, as I didn't learn to differentiate my cultural heritage from American culture until much later. Once I realized the difference, it has given me a big advantage in communication skills. I can easily relate to other people's viewpoints and converse with them, even if I don't necessarily agree. It makes for easier working relationships and getting along in general easier.
OP's SO's ex [is the real AH here and] is being very selfish and short-sighted trying to restrict their son's learning here. NTA.
Edit after update: OP is a gem of a woman to pull this off! That heart to heart opened doors that everyone will benefit from. Way to go!
