  • His name was Skip Adjent. The legend, shared over several decades, claims the young man was hit and killed by a train while along the tracks of Chapel Hill, Tennessee.
His story is just one variation of the tale behind the Chapel Hill Ghost Light, which is considered to be one of the state's most haunted legends.

It goes further back than 1942. My mother was born in 1916 and the light was there when she was growing up. She told me about it years ago when I was young.

I saw it on multiple occasions in the late '60s and early '70s. Don't know what it was but it was definetly there.

Kevin, Yes, I am Ike and Kat Rickman's son. They were good people and it doesn't surprise me they treated you so kindly. We are related on the Haynes side of the family-my dad's people. Our great grandfathers were brothers. They were the sons of Peril Columbus Haynes, a wounded Civil War vet. I hope to meet you someday, and again thanks for the kind words. John

Me and my two brothers saw it in the mid 90s. It was in multiple spots and even bounced towards our truck and got very close.

@LakeHart-qo4uw We didn't hear anything. It was a crazy experience though. We were there with the intent on seeing it, and we did.

John Rickman, are you related to Ike Rickman? Ike Rickman was related to mother Winona Haynes Egan. He knew my grandparents Thomas Coyle & Elsie Breckinridge Egan. I am Kevin Egan, Jack & Winona's 3rd son.
I was driving a truck through Chapel Hill one day back in the early eighties. The transmission went out in the truck so I was forced to pull it over. I saw a man across the street painting his porch so I walked over and asked if I could use the phone. We walked around back (the porch was covered in wet paint) so I could use the phone but Mrs. Rickman was using it at the time. So Mr. Rickman & I made small talk about the beautiful weather. Then I told him that my mother was from Chapel Hill. Mr. Rickman asked me her name and believe it or not he knew her, my dad and my grandparents. That was the first and only time that I ever met them. They invited me inside and Mrs. Rickman prepared me a wonderful lunch. I'll never forget that day. Of all the places to break-down, right across the street from relatives I had never met, seemed like the most unlikely event of a lifetime. Many years ago I remember my mother telling me that Mr. Rickman had passed away and I'm sure Mrs. Rickman has been gone for quite a while now. They were good people.

I’m sorry, I just had to leave a comment, my family has been in Chapel Hill since the beginning. We literally still have a house there that was built in the 1900s. That “SKIP AGENT” name is NOT correct. There are ZERO records of a man named Skip Agent The ORIGINAL story and FIRST NAME USED was a of a man named “Judge” and he was related to me. True people from Chapel Hill know what I am talking about. We’ve never heard the name “SKIP AGENT” before.... again this comment isn’t about the legitimacy of the light but the actual name used in the story.

Does it only happen at a certain point on the tracks or is it anywhere along it? I'd love to visit since I'm close by but I'm not sure where exactly to go.
