I see the inspiration for the car at 3:17 lol
Very cool, nicely done!
I believe that Rustoleum is the sweet spot between quality (good coverage, good spray pattern for a spray can, quality paint that doesn't fall apart...) and cost.
That said, most people don't get how much you have to use to get even coverage and a professional looking job. I've wondered how many cans it would really take to do a car right, and this gives me a pretty good idea. I did the hood of a car (larger hood) semi-gloss black (more forgiving than either gloss or flat) and I felt like I ran out of paint with I believe it was somewhere in the 11-15can range. Your striped spray pattern would hide some imperfections so it didn't need to be as perfect, but if your picture of the cans is all you used (56), then at an average cost (I've seen them as cheap as $3.96 and as expensive as $9, $5-7 seems normal), and you paid separately for clear coat.
Figuring in the difference in cost for the primer, it looks like you spent $300-400 in spray cans + whatever you spent for clear (not counting your labor and some basic bodywork supplies). Figuring that there's about 4oz of actual paint in a spray can (the majority of the rest is solvents to get it thin enough to spray and then some propellants...). You used about a gallon of actual paint.
Sticking with Rustoleum, the quarts are typically cheaper than the gallons, $8.50/quart(x4 = $34/gallon) vs $56/gallon. So 2 quarts of each color (4quarts total) for $34 + ~$20 solvent (mineral spirits, naphtha, acetone, depending on what color you go with and air temp different things work better). If some of those spray cans were primer then you could probably replace one quart with it, but even if you add a quart of primer that's only another $8.50. I would also consider adding a little enamel hardener (look in the farm implement line of the same paint, or just order it), which will cause the stuff to chemically harden (it hardens harder and faster) and gives it additional UV protection and gloss, for about $8-16.
Even if you don't have a spray gun/compressor you should be able to borrow one from somewhere and you can buy a good cheap spray gun from Harbor Freight or online for
Really glad to see you have proper PPE. I spray painted a motorcycle frame today, and I slacked-off on the last 5 or 6 touch-up sprays , and didnt wear my mask, decided to just hold my breath and step out of the area . I intended to finish the 6 final sprays and go inside for the night. Well tonight I took a q-tip to my nostrils out of pure curiosity and was pretty horrified at what I saw.
We really need to work to normalize eye, ear, lung and face protection. I see too many youtubers setting the wrong example (yourself excluded). This is only someting I've noticed in the older years of my life .... when I was younger I guess I thought I was invincible!!
Anyway, thanks for sharing all your content and spending time doing cool things to share with others
KEEP IT UP
I hope you realize that you'll have thousands of bees trying to mate with the mother of all queens now.
Not my choice but awesome job! The tape job was insane. Good stuff.
Fantastic paint job and looks very professional. I used to spray them myself for a living.
Looks awesome,,,love it when people do different stuff just because they can...
Great job guys, not my choice but I give you all credit for the work,
Looks super cool! I did not expect it at the beginning.
That is one of the coolest paint jobs I've ever seen with cans. You guys rock!
Hard on eyes, but great craftsmanship ! Amazing job with spray paint and masking , off the hook .
Done extremely well, I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference in person, you guys put a lot of work into it, nicely done!
Nice Job! the big thing is having a place to do it, I have seen guys do this and they get bugs and dust or sometimes pollen stuck in the paint from doing it outside.
i know yo fingers hurtin 😆😆😆
incredible amount of work put into that.
Did my hood with spray paint 3 yrs ago and still looks good ..yes you get orange peel just had to wet sand it ..every paint gets orange peel ,
how many cans of primer was used? how about base coat and clear? also how many layers you did put primer, base and clear?
Good job guys, and thanks for the footage.
You wouldn't lose that in the parking lot :)
But you'd wish you did!
You could park it in a "no parking zone" due to its camouflage :)
I've seen this in a porno. I think its called FakeTaxi #Pornhub
maybe at a crosswalk?
Kelly S yessss!! Lmaoooo
Now just put a Taxi light on top and Taxi stickers on the side.... You're in business!
Hell of a job with all that prep work. I hear that's the key to a good paint job.
When comparing cost to quality of rattle can or proffesional, that car is beautiful
I liked the contrast of the yellow tape giving it a ghost 2 tone yellow stripe effect.
Totally not my style, but I do have to admit it looks really professional for a rattle can job. Why send it off for clear coat rather than attempting to spray that too?
We wanted someone who knew what they were doing to give it a more professional look and guarantee it'd be much more durable. No one at the lab felt confident enough to make the coating very smooth and give the car that last bit of 'pop'.
Makes sense, I didn't thing about the durability aspect of it. From youtube it certainly looks like they put on the paint under it super smooth, but I guess it probably shows more up close. Superb job either way!
I definitely think the floor got some over spray
Cyrus Ahmadi-Moghadam also rattle can clear doesn't usually contain UV inhibitors, and isn't solvent resistant, so gasoline spills could ruin the paint.
sinformant 2k does..I love it....
Looks pretty nice
I was impressed! Hope you found the sockets for your tail lights. It needs the LEDs.
Not sure I would have gone that route with the stripes, but it did turn out nice.
What was total cost to do entire project?
So a total of 45 cans is roughly about enough to spary paint all of you can with cans
12 - Primer
17 - Gloss
27 - roughly 15 if you do one color
Am I yellow with black stripes?
Or am I black with yellow stripes?
mistress313 yellow with black stripes. Because we saw him spray the whole car yellow first 😂
So satisfying peel that black tape arghh
Nice job!!
How can you have a set up like that but have no compressor ? With the cost of that many spray cans you could have bought one !
The entire point was to see if we could do it with spray cans.
Surprisingly enough that's not a bad price at all for a two tone paint job because if you were to buy the supplies from house of kolor or DuPont your looking at easily $1000 in materials before you get started.
nice, would like it in black and gray myself
Awesome! Great job screw the haters, they have no ambition 👍🏼👍🏼
In regards to clear coat, what kind did they use? I assume it is a 2k product? How much was used to get the ridge lines from the stripes to blend?
Hats off to the patience it took for that masking job, doesn't matter if you like it or not that's one hell of job!
Perfect example of why u Don't do drugs kids .
“Ya like jazz?”
amazing what people can do
Total cost of masking materials, paint, primer, outside clear-coating?
And how much more is a wrap with graphics? Curious, I don't know.
that car looks beautiful. wish it was mine
Unbelievable! 🤙🏼
Let's paint the car with a spray can!
It'll be fun, they said!
Why did it take so many people!?
Unstoppable Morgan less time....
I tried to paint my car but I ended up with alot of tiger strips? How do you avoid them?? Do you charge for this service?
I would still drive it looking like that just so people would wonder if I was insane
Cat with socks at 8:53
How tf did you see that
Nice taxi indeed 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wilfred Díaz Vellón good
any sanding between primer and paint? wouldnt it need to be sanded with like 800 grit?
is that the dummy crash car
Ed Gualdino No that is Chris's personal car
That looks way better than I expected. When I saw the first bits of tape being pulled away I thought "oh hell there's tons of orange peel in the black paint, its gonna look like shit!" but the final reveal rather surprised me. Great work!
That's just dandy, but let's see it after a year of sunlight, rain, weather and washing.
Batman!!! I always thought about black and white stripped bumpers.
People will think the road markings are following them , u must be mad if that's your daily drive it does look kinda cool though
Thank you :) It is indeed my daily driver, and has been for years. As to the state of my madness....well.....that's my daily driver and has been for years. ;)
Now I know why the yellow paint spray cans shortage in the area!
how many spray paint cans to finished the paint job of your car ?
Now he's got a Taxi.
How long did this take y'all? Looks like a mega f ton of work for a rattle can job, certainly not my style, but looks good nonetheless!
It matches the forklift at 3:27 😄
Is that legal lmaooo 😂 😂 it looks like it would be a huge distraction to traffic. Bet you'll never get hot tho lolol
Great job! Looks like you practiced on the fork lift truck first lol
well that was a lot of work as are all custom paint jobs, great job on that, would not have been my color choice...I think the fork lift in the back round could have given you an idea what it would look like...
Nothing says #Caution or #Do not cross yellow tape or hazard more than this car does never the less nice job came out excellent
It isn't about the cost of the equipment compared to the rattle cans. Automotive paint is very expensive. To paint an entire car you are looking at well over $500 in just paint.
Very cool
Black and yellow rims. Your done
I hope that if they are trying to make this a side gig they charge way less then a actual paint job since cans are cheaper
I feel the work you guys put in to it. how many days did it take?
Nearly 3 weeks.
thegeekgroup can you tell us how many cans you used of each plz
nice job
"Do not cross this line" car
What was the total cost of this project?
The Stryper Yellow and Black Attack car.
Please will the YDAW allosaurus video will be out soon, and, I'll probably visit you guys pretty soon and I'll bring my velociraptor and ceolophysis toys and I hope Steven uses them in future episodes. That series is great.
It's nearing completion! A week-ish's work left!
I See one of the tricks might have been to remove the tape while the paint is still wet. No way you could have done that by yourself!! ha ha , what did you have, a dozen people helping here? Makes more sense now that I see this long form of your video
How many cans it took just to paint it yellow???
How many paint did u use
Sprained my spray paint finger trying to this. . . . on a van !
It's the color of a stop sign and the size of a barn but people ( women) still drive into it occasionally
Broooo😂
They have an adaptor that slides over the spray can with a trigger I use all the time. It is cheap and works very well
How many cans of yellow and how many oz per can?
and the deer still jump in front of it. WATCH OUT! Oh they are color blind......
Looks like a crash test car.. No wet sanding the paint job??
I wonder how it would have came out if you had used a 1k base and a 2k clear from a rattle can...
What happened to the rear bumper? Run out of tape?
But... why?
Why not?
thegeekgroup I guess there is no reason not too, and it must have been immensely satisfying peeling off those strips of tape. But I kinda meant, is it for anything? Is it someone's car who wanted to distract everyone on the road?
It was simply to see what we could do with the chosen tools.
Fair enough!
amazing
How many spray cans would this take
It took me 63 cans for this one.
It looked better when it was fully black with the tape on, looking like carbon fibre at 8:40
Damn. People will see that coming
Its a Mitsu Eclipse gts 2001-2005. I have the gt version. This paint job is too time consuming thus you need so many people working on it. I rather sent it off to get painted.
What kind of tape did u use ???
What grid did you use to sand it?
its possible lol but your index finger will probably hurt after the first 2-3 cans
I have to say, I appreciate the vast amount of effort put into that eclipse, but it is horrendous in my opinion, but that is my opinion. Other people might find it pretty damn cool.
Why the black stripes?
That's cool
Much effort for a distasteful end. Maybe it was done for some veteran road markings guys that works in road signage, that the only ridiculously idea I could come up with. Or maybe they just like it. Each to their own. I’ve never seen a car that makes people turn away though
I see the fork truck at 9:12
Watch it at .25 speed, and watch the stop motion unfold.
Classified as Yellow or Black ??
what car was it ??
Why?
