Maid Marian's speech- The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

  • Опубліковано 24 лип 2012
  • Maid Marian is found helping Robin and answers for it in King John's court. She has a few choice words about the whole thing.
Olivia de Havilland as Lady Marian Fitzwalter
    Claude Rains as Prince John
You don't seem him in this clip, but that's Basil Rathbone as Guy of Gisborne reading off the charges.
Everything belongs to Warner Bros, etc, etc. You should just go watch the movie
I own nothing and will not profit from this. I just love this clip.

If I may: Hollywood, this is what a strong female character looks like. To add to this: I really love the back and forth between Marian and Prince John.

Exactly and a strong female character respectful towards men. Look at the love between flynn's robin hood and de havilland's maid marian.

@@wonjubhoy why does she have to respect men to be a strong character? Why do string characters have to be morally good ?

Why is it the Marian of the 30s got to have an amazing speech like this and basically be a political prisoner, while every other version she's a basic damsel in distress?

    • @deb-1558
      @deb-1558 4 роки тому +7

Feminists have forgotten how actresses in the 30s and 40s got key roles in films because of there tallent. Look at Bette Davis and Katherine Hepburn

THANK YOU. The Disney version of Marian especially was absolutely ridiculous. Ugh, she's an emotional girl who thinks about Robin nearly every minute of the day (it drove me crazy as a boy). This version is courageous, witty and sometimes even funny.

Because before writers, and directors wanted to tell a great story, with heroes and villains and have movies that appeal to everyone. Now it's just to try and make more profit, and appeal to certain focus groups.

What is awesome is that it is HER actions that initiate the lead up to the climax.

This scene is even more meaningful when you think of what Olivia de Havilland went through dealing with the studio system at this time in Hollywood. Movie stars were contracted to a single film studio for a long period of time and weren’t allowed much choice in the roles they were to play. Olivia refused to appear in some movies and as a result was suspended twice by her studio. When her contract was finally up, they added six months to make up for the time she was suspended. She sued the studio, Warner Bros, and although she won and actors were given more freedom of choosing roles, she was blacklisted and didn’t work for two years. When she was finally able to work again, she took on more challenging and complex characters than the ingenue/damsel in distress roles she was always playing under Warner Bros and ended up winning two Oscars for Best Actress. A true pioneer of Hollywood, Olivia de Havilland ⭐️

Hard to believe that she will be 100 on July 1st of this year. My favorite actors have changed over time but my favorite actress never has. She has been my favorite since I was a small boy and I saw her in Robin Hood. And Errol Flynn is still one of my five all time favorites.

Olivia wasn't just the cute and spunky "girl". She was a woman of fire and integrity - on and off the screen, and audiences saw that and loved her for it. You didn't mess with her - as Jack Warner found out much to his regret.

The closeups and lighting of Marian show somewhat of an orange filter especially over her face (technicolor usage, lighting, etc.). It’s as if she is reaching her boiling points while expressing her honesty and outrage.

I would like to add my congrats to one of my favorite movie actresses...Familiar situation but she brings conviction and honesty to the part-who wouldn't slay 50 tyrants to rescue her? Her bosses: Warner Bros was one of the few studios to speak out against the Nazis, who were trying to bring back medieval barbarism and brutality .when this classic swashbuckler was made..Cannot say enough nice things about her...

John wasn't a very good king. Richard wasn't either. But here Richard is reminiscent of the Jesus myth of the bible.
