Dana said that wasn't the prime reason. The decision was made around the season 1 finale, so after Grom, but before Amity was more explicit about attraction to Luz and she started to more obviously return the feelings. More like because it was targeted to 12+ age groups not 6 to 11.

Nah, it was stated the reason is how it's more episodic then other Disney shows. You gotta watch all the episodes in order to grasp it, and you can't just tune in on, say, any episode of season 2 without being completely lost.

I’m not entirely sure where, but I know that in another country, they changed Luz’s line to Amity of “do you want to go out with me?” To “do you want to hold hands and travel together?” And, depending on who you ask, it’s become a running joke in the fandom.

I just found out how it got "canceled". I am a 23 year old boy, I had no particular reasons to feel represented in this work, but from the first episode I loved and respected it. Each episode brought me closer to the characters, their motivations, their fears and their love. My heart skipped a beat when I learned that the author's original plans cannot be fulfilled, it's a terrible thing in the art world. I know I cannot change things, and I know that there are decisions made at the top that will probably not be able to be changed, but if you are reading this comment, if you too, like me, have this story at heart and want to respect the intellectual will of the author , help me spread a message of love towards the series, just as Owl House has spread its message of love that perhaps has not been fully understood. Thanks Dana Terrace, your sadness at missing the chance to tell your story your way is the sadness of all of us.
I know, it's really sad. I'm a bisexual teenage girl and Luz and Amity both being bi teen girls made me so happy because it's not often when you see bisexual representation done right in shows. Hearing that it was going to be canceled after season 3 made me and my friends so upset. The one time we get good rep it's taken. 😔

@@AuthorPNG its in a episode where russia should be its just not there like it was blurred out, I dont think was the crew intention, but I saw a post on instgram that fans believed since russia was censoring the show, the crew sort of censored them out. I think the episode was "called it could of been great" if you freeze it and look at the map russia is not there is like there is a blank spot.

And no. There is no censorship. They just never air episode and never came to this episodes in translation. Like, finale of SU still not translated and when it was aired we have only 2 or 3 seasons.
And really funny, but our censorship always was vanilla compaired to the 4kids.

I don't think the changing of Rains pronounc was primarely for censorship. Many countrys simply don't have gender neutral pronounc.
Other than that, I'm personaly against censorship. I just find it useless, especially since the internet exists and you can find everything uncesored anyway if you search enough.
It could also be a goof, as I’ve heard of dubs confuse gender neutral looking characters pronouns before. Like with TAWO Gumball and Craig of the Creek. And those characters used he/him & she/her perspectively. So I doubt it’s censorship and more of a screw up.
Lot of slavic countries have gendered past tense. I think its possible to make it still work, like Raine could be using it/its pronouns or switch between he and she pronouns.

In Poland they let us have the: "Do you wanna go out with me!?" and translated it to: "Do you wanna be my girlfriend!?" which was great and I'm thankful for that, but in later episodes Amity references to Luz as "a friend" which was stupid.

I am from Germany and Raines pronouns were sadly changed due to translation problems. The german language does not have gender neutral pronouns and even though many people are trying to introduce new pronouns for nonbinary people, it's kind of hard to change the language especially with older people having more control over it than we do.
Aw, thats a shame. My family is German, and I didnt know there was not gender-free pronoun. I dont speak German unlike my parents, but it still makes me said

Most of the time when I talk with my friends and we talk about a nonbinary character/person we just say they/them, but I cant do that when I would talk with my parents for example, because they would not understand it.

I’m just glad Dana Terrace had the courage to give us all this positive representation.
And in a way that’s not tokenism. Amity has character and story besides being attracted to and now in a relationship with Luz. Willow’s dads are referred to matter of factly (in the context the term parents would be used she says my dads), and you wouldn’t even know Raine wasn’t non-binary if you didn’t catch all their pronouns were them/they because they’ve got a past relationship with Eda and their status as head of the Bard coven to inform their role in the plot.
Well I’m not LGBT, I really love seeing the positive rep. But my favorite form of representation has to be with Eda. Dana and the team did a phenomenal job portraying the Owl Beast curse as a disability/mental disorder. And as someone with high functioning Autism, I love it. Eda is one of my favorite characters because she lives life to the fullest, she doesn’t her curse drag her down and chooses to embrace with the owl motif she has. She also doesn’t want peoples’ pity, just for them to accept her and treat her like everyone else.

@@Wince_Media is not that they wouldn't censor it, they simply wouldn't release the show cuz why bother with foreign laws and spending money on editing the show to please that specific demographic. Would you u rather have the show not being released at all or would you rather have it with censorship but at least still teaching certain values to kids who might pick up the hidden cues? Again, if Disney suddenly decided one day to not do censorship countries would ban Disney from showing stuff in their channels
In Poland they didn't censor Lumity (not counting that they were "friends" in Eclipse Lake, but this was a mistake, they dubbed episode 9 first and then 8, that's why), BUT they kinda censored Raine, they gave them he/him pronouns BUT they gave them a female voice actor and a kinda female-like translated name (yeah, they translated their name into "Szeptucha" which is like a whisperer or somethin')
Some nb people in Poland use binary pronouns, so probaby giving them a female VA and male pronouns was the best they could came with, because there aren't any "official" nb pronouns, so it probably was the best they could came up with

Yeah, in german they gave Raine male pronouns too(,but there aren't any official pronouns for nonbinary people in german, but there is "Xier").
As a Polish person, I have a non-binary cousin. They use Polish male pronouns because because it is opposite to their birth gender.

Didn't they have to cancel it because the publishers wanted to pay the writers basically pennies to write a whole book so the writers refused to work unless they got better pay and the publishers were like "nah fam take the peanuts or go" so the writers went?
I saw Dana retweet about something being cancelled for that reason

I'm from Brazil, and I see a lot of people talking about Raine, saying that their pronouns have been translated to masculine pronouns, BUT, in portuguese, the masculine pronouns are ALSO neutral.

Raine's pronouns change are likely because a lot of languages don't have gender neutral pronouns. In some languages there no "it" at all, everything is masculine or feminine, even inanimate objects.

When it comes to the Raine situation, I can confirm that it's likely a lost in translation sort of thing. As someone que todavía está estudiando el español, I can confirm that this is at least the case in Spanish.
In some languages, especially Romance languages, the masculine and gender-neutral are basically the same. When it comes to pronouns in Spanish, there are only two that are used to refer to a single person: "él" which becomes he/him, "ella" which becomes she/her. Yeah, Spanish has "ellos/ellas" which becomes they/them (not respectively), but "ellos" is only used as a plural in Spanish as opposed to "they" which can be used as a singular.
And because the masculine in Spanish is also the gender-neutral, the closest translation of "they/them" singular would be "él" in Spanish. English gets its own gender-neutral because our language is one of the less gendered European languages, so pronoun usage can get lost in translation like that
In Germany there aren't any neutral pronouns either that are official
(there is "es" but thats used for things, it means "it" and there is "Xier" but thats not an official pronouns).
Pretty sure Poland is in the same situation along with a dozen other languages.
In Hungarian we don't have gendered pronouns at all, so it'd be the same regardless. Which on one hand is great because everyone uses the same pronoun, but on the other hand there's not really a lot of options to indicate if a character is NB.

@Larimar no, I'll take your word on it. But since "elle" isn't very common as you said, what would a Spanish speaker who doesn't use it use in place of it? Would they use a different noun or just not use a subject altogether? And just out of curiosity, what would you use as a direct object in place of "lo" and "la"?
Argentinian spanish speaker here and just wanted to say that everything Larimar said is spot on and perfectly explained.
wanted to add that, In recent times, people from Romance languages have noticed the very obvious issue of having to gender every noun and subject and the problems it would bring in the modern day, in a lot of countries there have been attempts to do add an "e" to gender words as a neutral, similar to English's singular They, instead of of "a" or "o" (i.e. el/ella/elle).
there was a lot of discourse around it, people expressing support or reject towards this modification, but never caught on nor became an official thing at least here and other places, and in some places like France its straight up prohibited.
So, not now, maybe in the future we could refer to Characters like Raine like anybody else instead of circumventing it by saying "tu (You)"

Everything seems fine, yeah? Well, in next episode they were translated as "best friends". Like WTF. If they were gf then just stick to it.

countries are different so sadly don't just blindly expect others to do what you want
If you're comfortable with watching the show in English you can use a VPN to watch the american version on official resources, or you could fall back to less orthodox... methods I won't talk about here, but you know what I mean. Maybe if you're lucky someone's done a fan dub/sub in your own language and you can find it.

This show deserves like 3-4 seasons more, it is sooo good. I'm 23 this year and I love everything about Toh. If a cartoons like that one are cancelled, shorted and censored, I really don't know what kind of shows Disney wants to show us and childrens. Toh is so heartwarming, I can't, I just I can't it's so good.

I watched the episode were Luz is sick in spanish, and it was linka ridiculous because everytime Amity said "girlfriend" they replaced it with "friend". So she was like "As Luz's FRIEND is my responsability to take care of her" to her other friends...
Cuz of the censor I didn't even know it when I watched the season 1 on the TV but I realized Amity blushing and search on the UA-cam that was when i find out they were a couple and season 2 did not publish on TV :,)
As a Turkish 🇹🇷 The Owl House fan the entirety of season 2 isn’t airing in Turkey. Most likely because it contains LGBTQIA+. I watch season 2 on UA-cam with subtitles.

a lot of the fans around the world in these places either understand English enough to watch the episodes uncensored or someone will upload the episodes with subtitles for their individual languages.
It might confuse some fans who watch it live on cable but not everyone.

That's totally how it is in Russia with modern cartoons such as these. People here snark at the mere idea of watching it on TV dubbed (and censored obviously). Even kids who do watch it that way eventually find out about all of this and switch to the way others watch it - on the internet with subs/fandub.
This is a systematic issue and it's about access to media for sure, but it's also about politics on queerness.

Well, on Hotstar, at least in Malaysia, Owl House seems to be uncensored, for season 2, only the first seven seasons are up, which feels sus, but Willow's dads, and the kiss is still there.
But, for Ducktales, the episode where we see Violet's dads is just not there.

In italian Raine is sometimes referred to as male for language reasons (we don't have neutral pronouns, the only one is used while writing), plus the adjectives and some verbs are declined in the masculine. At the same time, they're often referred to as "them" like a group of people. Literally "they".
As sad as this all is, the way they tried to edit the end of TTLGR and make it make sense is the funniest thing I’ve seen all week💀 It’s so ridiculous how far they’ll go to erase LGBTQ+ rep.

I think an important thing to keep in mind when discussing a country’s laws and their bigoted censorship laws is that there is a distinction between a country’s people and a country’s government. I know many people don’t actively think that an entire country as a bigoted whole, but it’s still important to make that distinction to avoid subconscious generalizations.

I know Russian people that are very pro LGBT+ and find it stupid that their translated versions get censored, that they just watch the English one in the case they can understand English. There are also Turkish people who are very progressive and pro LGBT+.
yeah, Turkish person here. I know many people here who are allies here, but also many homophobic people too. But unfortunately, the government is very homophobic. I was actually pretty surprised that they even aired the episodes after the grom ep lol.

In chinese, for pronouns, there is non gender-specific characters that you put before certain words, and then there's a character you put to indicate that the person is a *female*
IE
There is a gender-neutral "you"
And a female specific "you"

Ig what i'm trying to say, is that in Chinese, "they" would be used for males always, so if it were an error in translation, i could understand assuming that rein was referred to as "he" instead of "they"

Actually it's the other way around. Humanity evolves in the direction of acceptance and tolerance, it's just that you probably live in the country that is in the forefront of this process, while others are way behind for now.

In Poland, they keep all the lumity scenes but at the end of the episode they call themselves "friends" and in the next one too (you know how friends go to the tunnel of love) and they change Raine pronouns to he/him but they gave them female dub so maybe there is some hope left...

Yeah, the issue of non-binary personal pronouns might be difficult to translate into certain Romance languages because literally every pronoun is gendered there.
Like, there is no purely gender neutral version of "they/them" in Spanish, at least not any that is officially recognized by the RAE, or even one that Hispanic non-binary people all have an agreed consensus on.
Same with Slavic languages

It's kind of interesting how they decided to deal with gay witches in my country. In Polish translation everything is normal in Hooty's Moving Hassle but for some reason Luz and Amity call each other "Best Friends" in Eclipse Lake. Also, they use pronouse he/him for Raine but they gave them a female voice actor so I guess it's a translation issue
