Qubes OS: The Operating System That Can Protect You Even If You Get Hacked

  • Talk from the Circle of HOPE (2018) hacker conference: www.hope.net/schedule.html#-q...
"If you’re serious about security, Qubes OS is the best OS available today," says NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. "It’s what I use, and free." In most operating systems like Windows, macOS, and all Linux distributions, all it takes is one mistake - open the wrong PDF, plug in the wrong USB stick, "curl | bash" the wrong URL - and it’s game over. Even without root, the attacker can access all of your data, take screenshots, listen through your mic, watch you through your webcam, and get persistence to spy on you in the future. Qubes OS aims to be a reasonably secure operating system that doesn’t have this problem. In Qubes, your host machine runs a thin layer of software for managing a graphical desktop environment and all other software is compartmentalized in separate virtual machines, with strict controls on what hardware they can access and how they can communicate, all while being usable enough to run as your daily OS. In this talk, Micah will show off some of the cool things that this approach makes possible, like opening email attachments in "disposable VMs," managing anonymous identities, keeping secrets like password databases, PGP keys, and sensitive documents stored in vaults without Internet access, and much more.

I can see why Edward Snowden would use Qubes OS... excellent idea.

So thats what you sound like lol. good shit love to see people repping Qubes. You been a strong spokesman online already. Most people are too scared or selfish to share any knowledge with the public nowadays.
Still the User has to have strict discipline when using Qubes. But Qubes will def help them if they willing. Its super user friendly even if alot of people like to pretend its hard. Its just like using ubuntu imo and you can even use win 7/10 with it. The learning curve is definitely when having to keep track of multiple qubes/vms. Remembering Seperate file system/directory structure that stores data. But the color coded window coordination for connected qubes/vms, with specific computing daily tasks, definitely makes it a breeze imo.

Great video, thank you! It works out the box in my old Lenovo Thinkpad T-420 with 8GB RAM!! :-) So, if I understand well, the backup is a snapshot of all LVM and it is good for Catastrophic Rollback? "One domain to rule them all, one domain to separate them, one domain to rule them all, and only clipboard bind them!" :-)

Have a question: how do you backup your data? if you use the Backup Qubes utility it only back ups the selected qubes apps, configuration, etc. but not the personal files stored in them.

The Qubes backup tool backs up and restores snapshots of entire VMs, including all your data in them.

has the last Qubes OS version been broken or any security leak has been detected after last Qubes OS version release?
can i naturally run other Qubes OS inside one Qube of Qubes OS (Base OS)?
If i run a Windows 10 in a Qube VM, do that windows 10 could has, by its own configuration, 3D acceleration?
can i run cubes on ARM architecture?

You say mouses work but wouldn’t by the logic of keyboard USB’s they would not? Or atleast they would also have to be enabled if they were plugged in with a usb?

Hello, I installed it and after booting I can see: “Loading Xen 4.14.5 … Loading Linux 5.15.94-1.qubes.fc32.x86_64 … Loading initial ramdisk …” Then the screen goes black. Any suggestions? Thanks

    @48:18 (backups)
You covered how to backup individual VMs. But how do you backup the entire system?
If my storage drive, that contains Dom0 and everything else, were to fail, I would want to install a replacement storage drive, and then restore my system from an external USB drive that had previously done a full backup.
    Backups:
    1) How do you do a full backup?
1a) How do you do subsequent incremental / differential backups?
    Restores:
    2) Once you install your new internal storage device (that replaced the failed storage device), how do you boot from a USB flash drive that has the program(s) needed to recognize your hardware and perform a restore from an external USB drive to the new internal storage device?
What software needs to be on your bootable USB flash drive, that will allow you to copy / restore your data from your USB hard drive to your internal storage drive?
The goal being that once your restore is completed, you should be able to do a normal Qubes boot-up, and it will be like nothing ever went wrong.
    Thank you.

It looks like impossible to install latest Qubes 4.1.0 to QEMU/KVM. It does strange "freeze out" randomly during install. Sometimes i can not even reach the language selection screen. Sometimes i can pass it through but on the partitioning screen will be freeze the whole installation process. I was trying remove usb mouse and using laptop's built-in mousepad. Also was trying booting from CDROM and trying all available Hard Drive options. VirtIO USB IDE SATA SCSI. Also i was trying with larger sizes: first 40GB then 50GB 55GB and 60GB. Also i was re-downloading the .iso as might be corrupted for first attempt...No luck. I was installing R4.04-x86_64 but it was also not easy. Default partitioning does not work only if i did custom partitioning. But at least could install it. But latest version always failed.. Nested virtualization enabled but IMMOU error can not eliminate....Is that could causing this issue? Or What?

It can't protect you if you're not one of the lucky few who followed the install steps and actually managed to install it, three laptops, all hardware compatible, not one made it past the reboot after initial installation.
No amount of config file edits, or kernel parameter edits made a difference, so it can't protect me because I can't install it, I'm just glad im not the only one who has this problem.
Guess in about 10 years they might have gotten the install process more friendly, or the whole project goes down the toilet, which it probably will if the install issues aren't fixed, currently, only a tiny subset of users would use qubes, it is unusable, and uninstallable to 99.9% of people.
And as far as I can see, it offers nothing more that linux with whonix in a VM, and a tails USB (all of which are very easy to install and use) cannot offer... qubes uses third party stuff also.
