Makes me want to cry when I see this. The best time of my life. Great video. Really brings back good memories. I don't know about everybody else but life was real good back then. But that's my opinion.
In Chicago you always knew it was summertime officially when you heard on both WLS & WCFL "SUNDAY! SUNDAY! AT THE BEAUTIFUL US 30 DRAG STRIP" Big Daddy Don Garlits vs Shirley Cha Cha Muldowley! And the commercial always seemed to be about 20 decibels louder than the last song played! Ah to be 12 again! CMTFU!
My dad, Pete Sobecki aka S.O.B. Auto Parts ran his 65 Chevelle, 73 Vega Panel Wagon and his Super Gas Corvette there. Those are memories that will always be with me.
When I was a young kid we was there all the time , seen all the big names it was so awesome!!! Form jungle Jim to Kentucky moonshiner to no big thing I loved it all 😁 and a big Motörhead to day because of it!! DRAG ON!!
@@waynewells359 this was the address 7900 Clay St. Merrillville, IN 46410. Hobart annexed it. So it now has Hobart IN as the address instead. I grew up 5 Mi SE of there on Randolph and Division St.
Odd I knew people bet there. I spent many SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY. THERE. US 30 DRAY STRIP. That was in the summer of 69 and 70. Drove a 69 dart a couple of times. 4 tents quicker than the owner, parked next to a 70 HEMI CUDA .. BURNT ORANGE. Even ordered a 71 HEMI CUDA. Then got laid off. Dont know if the dealer canceled the order. It was a burnt orange with a black vinyl top. Auto because of insurance rates.

Used to live in Chicago from 1971-77. Went there all the time. Became a fan of LaHaie's there. Thanks for posting this.
What a gentleman, that LaHaie fellow.
Dick's daughter Kim wasn't bad either.😅
Loved going to US 30 when I was a kid

Thanks Bobby for another trip down memory lane.
US30 was a great strip...tons of fun there
Except it was NOT in Gary... it was in unincorporated Lake County between Merrillville and Hobart!
Schereville
@@waynewells359 No... Schererville is 8 miles to the west. You can still see the track on aerials north of US30 and between Clay and Colorado.

I spent a lot of Sunday afternoons and Wedesday nights there!
Me too 😁
Back when ingenuity and the driver one the race. Now it’s just who spends the most money.
The announcer needs to switch to decaf!😱
Ron Leek from Byron was WAY worse.....lol.
He is wound up like a two day alarm clock! ... 😂

Check out those homes near there..!!! Bet they heard quote a bit of roar...
520 inches is a nice Pro Mod sized engine now. And the Pro Mod engine is twice the HP.
Top fuel is now limited to 500 cubic inches
I races there in 69/70. Was the best time ever
What year was this about, 73 or 74?
'73
@@CompetitionPlusTV Thank you. My first trip to the strip was 78, I was hooked.
I really hope someone fixes up US 30 just for looks and cacklefest type things as well as shows
Home owner's got it shutdown because of the noise 😢
I was there over 100 times and never saw roller starts on US30 track?😮
There goes Starter Carter...
I wonder if that is Kim ....26:28
That was Dick's son (i think Jeff was his name) Kim didn't start coming around for a few years still, started by selling t shirts
