    Imagine when Young FoxeoGames becomes old enough to play Ultima himself and watches this video if it's still around. It's almost like it's his destiny to become the Avatar.

    My fav ultima game! I played the heck out it, so much that I discovered ways to exploit or just play it crazy. Like, you can line up a cannon in trinsic so you can fire it to kill the guard at the town entrance. No consequences. Or, get sherry the mouse and level her strength up so she becomes the most OP companion with her high dexterity.

    Played this for 100s of hours on a monochrome screen. First played it as a GTA. The choices were awesome. Took a cannon, raided a locked door, got in jail, got out of jail, etc. Then i got a clue book and realised there was a story to progress thru.

    I was 6 when this came out. This game did not exist for someone my age. But just a few years later, Ultima Online came out. I can only imagine how CRAZY AWESOME it was to be an Ultima fan when UO came out.

    This was the first Ultima I played on my own computer so it holds a special place in my heart. Some of the nuisances you mention such as not being able to sleep in beds always bugged me too, and poorly documented spells like “Dispel magic” to cure poison. I saw your review of Ultima VII was much more positive, but to me this game world felt bigger (heck there were 5 or 6 “layers” to the map), lots of places and dungeons that don’t have anything to do with the main quests, and more freedom to do random crap. Like for example asking the gypsies’ doggie to “speak”, or asking the horse seller in Britain (named Wilbur) about “Mr Ed”. Many of the spells are useless, but you could do pointless but fun things like clone up a bunch of demons in a dungeon with dragons and cast “confuse” (all while safely invisible) and watch the melee. I can see in retrospect how primitive this game looks and how clumsy the interface was but compared to Ultima V it was a revelation (and that’s saying something because V was great).

      Same! My mom had this on PC and I loved playing from as early as I could remember. I didn’t understand the game at all and mostly just kept restarting the game and playing the opening fight over and over before wandering around fighting random monsters, but it was such an influence on me.

    The bleeps and bloops were not emulating the PC speaker. They WERE the PC speaker. Sound cards were only used for music. Effects were PC speaker no matter what.

    One of the first games I played and watched, with my brother Pierre, in the 1980s. I always loved fantasy RPGs over every other kind of game.

    Payed the game as a kid - one of the best games I've ever played. I actually think that the turn the story took with the Gargoyles was one of the things that shaped the way I look at the real world.

    Very sad that the fan project to rebuild Ultima 6 using Ultima 7's engine was abandoned. The early screen shots were very promising

    It's like IV and V were created on the same "engine" (I know, that's not the most apt word for those days), with V being a bit of an upgrade over IV, and VI and VII were created on a new "engine", with VII having some upgrades over VI.
    I used to think that VII was my favorite Ultima game (perhaps because of how new it was when I played it), but I'm beginning to wonder if V and VI were actually the best, both in terms of graphics as well as story.
    I really want a reboot of the series, starting with Ultima IV, in a modern game engine like Unreal 5.

    • @mercster
      @mercster Рік тому

      Ultima 5 is my favorite. It's huge and expansive but has definite upgrades over 4. 6 was good but the mouse interface/inventory management/story was goofy... Ultima 7 is really good but the scale just isn't the same as Ultima 5.

    I think it would have been important to mention "karma" because if you don't pay attention to it, you could have a hard time finishing the game.

    Want money? Get the Book of the Mantras from the Lyceum. Empty ALL your characters inventory. Walk between Empath Abbey and Yew until you find a Wisp. The wisp will buy the book and in payment will fill EVERY PARTY MEMBER'S inventory with gold nuggets. Exchange them at the treasury in Brittania.

    You can stand over chests and loot and pick them up that way.
    It's like with a lot of groups that society considers to be just evil, that there is something more to their sub-culture and perspective than meets the eye.

  • @Eggs_is_eggs

    LOL if you're trying to min-max character creation by looking it up online, you're playing the game wrong.
    And this game is completely open world. You can go anywhere right from the beginning. Not sure where you got the idea from that the game funnels you to different areas. The first part of the game requires going to all 8 townes and 8 shrines which can be done in any order.
    And the game came with a cloth map that you are supposed to use, so that's why there's no in-game map.

    i wonder if you've played these games near the time of release, and if you've played the previous games. those sounds you mention mimic the older games. i also found some of your complaints on U7 with the same curiosity. im not wearing rose tinted glasses, but i did grow up with these games and love them.

    • @RealMarcFoxx
      @RealMarcFoxx  6 років тому +1

      I grew up playing video games on the computer since the Commodore 64 days. I played on several machines, working my way from the C64, to DOS, to Windows. I played U7, U8, and U9 when they were still modern games. The rest I've played long after their time had passed, and so I'm looking back at them from a more modern perspective. However, keep in mind, I did play video games during those time frames.

    • @Rudywtf
      @Rudywtf 6 років тому +1

      @@RealMarcFoxx right on, i started with my brother entering code for some trs-80 games, then a tandy 1000 running all the sierra games and with ultima 4, even though my brother i believe had played 2 and 3 as i had the disk before i threw away all my old floppy's. Maybe it is rose tinted glasses, but ultima 6 at the time was pretty amazing and i can 100% agree with a modern perspective how they can be seen as terrible and clunky, but at the time there was none better.

    Thank you for the great review - good job! My top3 games back in the day. I just wandered is there any easy instructions how to properly install nuvie to your Ultima? I bought GOG version of Ultima VI and well it runs fine at BOSBOX but I would appreciate some multiple save slots and higher resolutions.

  • @one8576

    The only way to play the game is with the original version. Also with no hints allowed besides the map and manual and came with the game originally.

  • @JonRowlison

    Probably just me, but I don't think this UI is an "upgrade." The Ultima5 interface was 5x better... and probably about that much snappier as well.

  • @mercster
    @mercster Рік тому

    Holy crap, I didn't know about Nuvie's "Ultima 7-like" mode... that is SO MUCH BETTER> 😂 Ultima 6 is a great game but the inventory management and mouse interfaces are horrible. The Ultima 7 interface mode may actually make this bearable to play!

    • @mercster
      @mercster Рік тому

      Oh and by the way, I just watched your Ultima 8 video and suggested ScummVM, which has folded Pentagram in and probably cleaned it up/fixed some bugs, it also folded in Nuvie, so you can use ScummVM to play both 6 and 8.

      Pretty sure the Original Plus mode didn't add the keystrokes... Ultima 6 was playable without a mouse and included all the commands. Not sure what the Plus mode adds.

    Ultima VI is a good rpg ruined by one of the worst UI's in gaming history. I don't know how much better the modern mod/patch of that UI ,makes it but based on the review it sounds like many of the frustrations of the original game remain. I would not recommend playing the un-modded game unless you are willing to put up with a lot of needless clicking and time wasting annoyances as it is hard to find the good game under the terrible user interface. Maye the changes made In the modern update of the game make it more playable but back in the day I tried to play Ultima VI several times, got bored and frustrated and never finished. What made me all the more angry was the lost potential of what is at it's core a good rpg.

    • @Rudywtf
      @Rudywtf 6 років тому +2

      but what UI for a game this large with multiple characters do you compare it to in the year 1990? keep in mind you can solo each character, have characters of smaller sizes like sherry the mouse to go through holes. the worst i recall was opening bags and stuff and getting garbage, but that is what the move key and the numpad was for, quickly moving the garbage to get to what you want.
