Everyone add some handy tips in your comments to help out! ^^ I do the compost + sand method & if you're removing plants, stuff inevitably gets kicked into the water column, but it will continue to leach nutrients into the column unless you cover the hole with more sand. It doesn't take a lot to cover it either - about 1/2 to a full teaspoon. I also add crushed eggshell into my sand layer for the shrimp & snails to use over time.

Hack 1 not needed...Just squeeze the sponge from any cycled filter into the new tank. Instant cycle.
