    Idk why people have so many issues with bladder/pond snails. I have bladders in all my tanks and as long as you don't overfeed they won't overrun a tank. Cool video and good reminder of how awesome bladdre snails are

    That is soo cool, thanks! Pest snails eats cyano!! I never knew that. Cyano is a sign of low nitrogen. Do you measure nitrogen and phosphate? What is the NPK ratio of your macro fertilizer? A good way to help restoring the balace is to stop feeding, but instead krushing pest snails every day for food. I think it would do the same job as amano, just faster.

      No, I don’t measure nutrient levels in my tank. I just stick with a fertilizer brand I really like, and it does a great job!

    #2 I've had success doing this, but I don't skimp on the bottom feeders. Eventually the catfish and plecos will get too big and have to move. We keep shrimp, loaches and dwarf frogs as well over a few tanks.

    yeah.... i think i need to feed my amanos more. i couldnt figure out why my alternantheras reineckii were getting wrecked. i thought it was a deficiency, tried stuff, still getting wrecked.. i couldnt find many stories on amanos eating them. only here and there, but the majority is ppl saying deficiency. but adressing possible deficiencies didnt help in my case, so im gonna try to just feed them more.. im bummed cause i love those plants. what u said about the molt seems a bit off tho? like, mine will start munching on it pretty fast, but only for a little, and then they leave it for a bit, untill they come back to it again. i think it might be more important to look at the speed with which it is consumed entirely, not how fast they start on it.

      If you have live plants, you should use fertilizers. It can be tricky to find the right balance where fish waste alone provides enough nutrients for your plants. Plus, fish waste doesn’t supply potassium, so your plants might always be a little deficient in that. I’d suggest giving fertilizers a try next-your plants might be struggling, and that could be contributing to the algae issue.

    I had a 10 gal tank that had 2 cory cats, and 6 guppies that worked their guppy magic and overstocked themselves, yet it was a stable population. Anyways, I soon developed an algae problem. I had silk plants in the tank, but decided to take a chance with live plants, which I had never had before. So I did some research and found some anubias plants, along with what I think may have been a petite version of anubias that I found as a buy one get one free in a betta display. I got it, and also picked up some java ferns (which didn't do as well as the anubias) when the pet store was out of anubias, just to fill out my tank . It was heavily "planted" with silk plants, which I removed and added all the live plants still in their pots. I also was over run with snails, but they were good at helping the nerite snails (2) that I added with the algae. Like in the video, I could see where they were eating. I also put a sprig of pothos in the back, which was held up by a cutout in my tank hood. I didn't add any Co2 or any fertilizer and it wasn't long before the water cleared up (it was green from all the algae & water changes didn't help get rid of it at all) and the algae was gone. My tank became a jungle and my fish LOVED it! I didn't do water changes, just topped off the tank when the water level got too low. Sadly, I moved and had to break down the tank, and I gave away the fish, plants, tank, and filter/heater/pump. I'm looking to start another tank and I will definitely go with live plants!

    There’s no such thing as a pest snail. It’s funny how people that call them ‘pests’ and avoid or kill them always have terrible looking tanks with endless issues.

    Great Video. I have a really big problem with algae in my 55-gallon. I have been putting in more plants with mixed results since I also have three Silver Dollars, a Jack Dempsey, and a blue African Cichlid so some plants go away. I am about to get some snails but as much as I love Ottos I do not think that they will survive in my tank for long.

      Plecos can be a great option since they’re excellent algae eaters. I personally don’t use them because they can grow quite large, and, to be honest, their look isn’t really my favorite. But they’re definitely worth considering.

    In most ponds, there is a constant battle between algae and aquatic plants. You can see the succession across the year. Usually, plants win because they can grow emersed. Emersed plants in the aquarium is a nice way to keep algae at bay.

    I intentionally add “pest” snails to all my aquaria, if they don’t come free with plants. They’re fun to watch, and they take care of algae. Why wouldn’t I? And yes, shrimp balance the snail population, even if they aren’t Amano shrimp. My neocaridina have had the same effect.

      There are a few things you can try! Adding crushed coral or eggshells to your filter can help boost hardness naturally. You can also use rocks like Seiryu stone, which slowly release minerals into the water. Hope that helps!

    This video gave the impression that otocincluses can work on green spot algae, while other channels say it can't. One forum says yes it can, another forum says no it can't. Who the hell should I believe here 😐 These fish do not come cheap in my local stores, so forgive me if I take a long, good look at each claim about algae eaters. My tank isn't overrun with algae by the way, I'm just considering getting some algae eaters so that maybe I only have to scrub my glass every two weeks or something.

    • @jaxstolk7611
      @jaxstolk7611 6 днів тому

      I have a few Otocinclus in my tanks, in my experience they pretty much eat all of the softer types algae, I bought them and in two days they got rid of all of the algae I had leaving me stuck with the green spot algae. For green spot algae you should look for another solution, I've heard certain types of snails could do the trick. Ps. If you are still considering buying them they are great fish to have, very lively and a great community fish to have :) keep in mind that they can keep your tank clean, but you do need to start feeding them after your algae is gone or if it's almost gone. They are grazers so they like to eat continuely trough out the day, I'd recommend some algae wafers and additionally you could add some softer types of vegetables. Mine go crazy for some cucumber, you can cook it for a few minutes until it becomes soft and then just drop it in the tank. Makes it easier for them to eat and it wil sink to the bottom instead of floating at the top :D If you want them, buy 6 or more they like their buddies. When buying look for ones that have big bellies ( you should look for the ones that have a circle or oval like shape of belly, the best way to notice is when they are hanging on the front glass) it's important that they're well fed because they are wild caught so it takes a couple of weeks to get them to your local fish store. If they are malnourished it's pretty hard for them to bounce back and could die within a couple of days/ weeks. If your local fish store only has ones that don't look well fed I'd look for them at another fish store in your area where they are well fed, so you don't have as much of a risk of them dying. I hope this helps and have fun!

    • @underwatergardens709
      @underwatergardens709 6 днів тому

      The algae I had in that tank wasn’t green spot algae-it was green dust algae. Green dust is much softer, and Otocinclus absolutely love it! Green spot algae, on the other hand, appears as tougher green dots on the glass, and Otos don’t enjoy it as much. If you’re dealing with green spot algae, Horned Nerite snails are a fantastic choice to tackle it!

    • @IskandarPramono
      @IskandarPramono 2 дні тому

      Same in my country Indonesia 1 ottocinclus can cost 40- 50 horned nerite snails or around 60 normal nerite snails, yet their effectiveness on munching algae is far inferior compared to 40- 50 nerite snails. SAE Siamese Algae eaters work well too in most scenarios.

    In a no co2 aquariums id say. Algae eating fish/snails and shrimp. Relax on the fertiliser and light intensity as in a non co2 tank your limiting factor will be co2 so to much your plant cant use but the algae can. Floating plants are great as they can get co2 from the air and can help block to much light. Also plants sticking out of the tank like Pothos and English ivy.

    Rarely do I need to cycle a tank but there are a few times where just taking at least 3 weeks saved the tank. Some plants that die off completely and flood the tank woth waste. Having sand so fine the snails can dig into and release the nutrient layer. Soil tablet or plain soil floating up or leeching far more than advertised. And sometimes just seeing fish being a lot more territorial than you'd expect. Take time and observe at each step to save effort. What's a week here and there?
