Report on HDTV trials during the 1990 World Cup

An interesting story on the early developments of HDTV technology. Although the analogue version of HD would have a ridiculously low uptake, digital HD would be the new benchmark in the 2000s. In Australia it would take 17 years before the technology reached local television.

Just an indication of how far behind we were, that Japan watched Italia 90 in High Def. In Ireland alot were still getting it on radio but most Aerial TV.

Kind of crazy how long it took for HDTV (720 and 1080P/I) to become widespread. That type of quality in 1990’s would have blown my mind.

HD's been around since the 1980s, but it took until 2006 (Blu-ray introduced) for most people to have it.

I wonder if those HD recordings of Italia '90 are still around, it would be awesome if FIFA could release them online or on Blu-Ray discs as a commemorative collectible.

If your watching it on SBS or Optus your not watching it in UHD, SBS broadcast in Full HD 1080i x 1920 mp4. Optus is stream is currently available in 720p x 1280 for services other than satellite, which is 1080i x 1920.
