I just want to add that you shouldn't overtighten the top cap as the fork will press against the headset a tad too much and can cause increased wear and tear and not feel as smooth as it could
Thanks a lot for the video. Now i will use your video how to install a new bike fork video in my new Giant MTB frame. This is a very good technical info on how to install a new bike fork even for tapered and straight steering tube. I will recommend to use pipe cutter for cutting the steering tube for easy and straight cutting. Thanks a lot and God bless.
thanks so much, there were so many different bearings that made me confused. and after watching this videos ,i will never trust my local store. i live in a small city in China. those mechanics in bike store are not specialized enough and poorly installed my first carbon road bike. The next time ,i will install them myself ! appreciate
Love this video you put the camera right up to the forks so i can see what your talking about and what parts go where unlike other channels. I just took my forks off because im getting some forks that are a bit rusty but theyre amazing forks they are like the rock shox boxxer forks same design but different company going to install them to see if they are the right size and if they are gonna remove the rust re grease them and make them like new basically restoring them lol.
It's a pretty good video in comparison to others. it gives you a good basis to go on, use google if you need to know any more if you're not able to figure it out yourself. 1) not many bikes use a split design these days 2) that's your personal preference, a lot of people like a plush stem and top cap, nothing above it, looks a lot better and you know it. 3) Does not make it a bad video 4) You're right on that one and 5) For the purpose of the tutorial, it doesn't matter.
5.5 inch? In length yes, but the headtube is measured by its diameter. Usually 1 1/8 inches, 1 1/4 inches or 1.5 inches. If you follow this step by step, take your time, there should be no problem, and to be honest you don't need to measure anything in this process, just marking out ready to cut. What exactly are you asking?
Is there an adapter to fit V brakes ? I found a nice fork for a 26 inch to replace a rusted one on a 24. The mounting boss is about an inch off so now the pad rubs the sidewall instead of the rim. Put 26 inch wheels on? Might not fit in rear.
Hi Bikebook. Good video, but... I need an advice. I have old frame, with rock shox pilot sl...can i have some problems with installing some newer fork, suntour xcm V3 or XCM M-LO, XCR for example. I mean, could parts like crown and rest from headset could be useful on mentioned types of forks. Thanks a lot...
Seeing it is easy. Doing it is impossible. I just broke my MTB carbon fiber and now I'm looking to buy a light aluminum frame. When I measure the headtube on my bike its 5.5 inch. When I go to ebay to check, there is no such a thing as 5.5 inch. Wheels I know for fact are 26. Any Idea please?
To be more specific. Do you install a star nut? Since downhill bike use direct mount stem, there is no way to install a top cap. I was thinking that the upper crown tighten the fork to the headtube. No video was found to support my claim.
I would never use a screwdriver to install a star nut. You run the risk of knocking the threads out of it. I use a socket. Don't worry so much about trying to put it in straight. The star nut will flex and go in if it is a little crooked. I just installed new forks on my bike and did it this way and it worked just fine. I also removed the old star nut from my old forks by knocking the star nut through the bottom and there is no damage to the star nut.
Thomas Winfree I put the top cap bolt through my star nut as a guide, then found a deep socket that would fit over the bolt head, and used the actual socket to push the star nut in, hitting with a rubber mallet.
If headset bearings are sealed (they usually are), then you can just spray the thing with WD40 to displace water. The grease here is not all that important, read the author's answer below
Mtb Life absolutely dont just spray with wd40. If your talking about lubrication or grease for the headset (seen as green in this video) it is either shimano general use grease or by far the best I've seen (and ive seen alot) is 'MOTOREX 9000" bright green grease. It is designed by a company who provides grease to cable cars running in the coldest/wettest/harshest environments. It will stop water getting in at the bearings and does not wear thin or degrade. If this doesn't answer your question please clarify what your asking.
v10moped I used a simple metal conduit tubing cutter to cut a chromoly steer tube. Worked like a charm, and you always get a perfectly straight and square cut.
Question: why cut 3mm below the line? Wouldn't it result in a situation where the part of the stem that has the upper bolt is not clamping down properly with the steerer tube? I cut my forks 1mm above the line, then put a 2mm spacer below the top cap. This way my top cap pushes against the spacer, the spacer pushes against the stem, and both upper and lower bolts are making the stem fully clamp down the steerer tube. Am i doing it wrong or are there any negative effects on my stem/steerer tube by doing so?
Hey i am looking at replacing my forks and my question is does the star mount come with the new set of forks and if not how do i remove it from the old forks
The crown race should NOT have a split on it !, and needs to be pressed on.., and the fangled nut should be at least one centimeter countersunk .. peace
Thank you! Very good, no nonsense instructions & narrated at a smooth pace; my kind of video :)
i thought it is rocket science!! thanx for simplifying
It´s good to include the specifics on which type of fork and which type of steering type you are using.
I just want to add that you shouldn't overtighten the top cap as the fork will press against the headset a tad too much and can cause increased wear and tear and not feel as smooth as it could
9 year didnt matter very straight forward video no nonsense instruction ❤️
That was an excellent tutorial straight to the point, Fantastic job sir!
The best video on UA-cam how to explain how to do this thank you so much ✋😎✋

Thanks for this useful information! One of the best I had seen!
easy peasy thanks man. Now all I need is money.
haha😃
Excellent tutorial! I will build up my 301 the next days and installing the fork is the part I was most scared off.
Not anymore. :-)
thanks so much, there were so many different bearings that made me confused. and after watching this videos ,i will never trust my local store. i live in a small city in China. those mechanics in bike store are not specialized enough and poorly installed my first carbon road bike.

Glad I discovered this video today. Thanks 😊

thanks, finally useful and easy to understand video of what i was looking for.
Thank you for this video; it had learned me that I can forget to try change the fork by myself! :)
Thanks for the video it's a shame that so many people are so negative about your efforts to help them.
Very very very helpful! thanks for posting this!
Você soldou a parte da rosca?
Do you know for certain, with folding handlebars, if it matters if the stem on the forks are threaded or not ? Mine is an ebike if that matters...

Thanks for video - mine fork has slipped a couple of mm, now I can fix.

Could you help me dude I'm upgrading my forks on my carrera hellcat my headset bearings are shot need some assistance on what I need to replace them

Thanks to show it how to do it, it's was and excellent well done job today in my bike
Do have any videos showing the bearings being installed?
Good job!
Nice to the point video. Thanks
how will i know whats the right measure? i have to ride the bike before
Looked like the star nut was pretty darn close to the top, should be a bit further down I think no ?
Is it bad if the star nut is close to the top?
Hello, I got a new shock today and I need to cut the stem but I dont have a vicegrip or that tool, just a hacksaw, is there a substitute?
To be more specific. Do you install a star nut? Since downhill bike use direct mount stem, there is no way to install a top cap. I was thinking that the upper crown tighten the fork to the headtube.

any suggestions on why their is grease coming out of my headset? both top and bottom. I have a DH bike..
Thank you! Most complete video on this that I have found on youtube, cheers!
And magically the snowflake ❄️ inside the forks appeared 😅😎
Why do you finger the top and bottom of the head tube in silence at the start (0:08 - 016) of the video?
Great video
Рулевая без подшипников?
This bike don't have bearing??
what is that spacer called you are lubing up at 2.03 cus my forks are missing it???????
I would never use a screwdriver to install a star nut. You run the risk of knocking the threads out of it. I use a socket. Don't worry so much about trying to put it in straight. What fork did you fit and what travel did you have? The fork looks good.
If you use care, you can cut the fork to a certain size, and use spacers, that way the imperfections in the cutting won't show :D That's what I did!
Is it dangerous to leave it uncut, and move the spacers above the stem? Especially when using a carbon fork?
It is RockShox Lyrik 170mm.
where can I get that cutting sleeve?
performance bicycle store
Yep. The performance one has a tab that fits into a table vice. Nice to have for cutting all sorts of pipes.
I've worked a lot of steel but I haven't tried what I'm about to recommend... a $5.00 pipe-cutter from the hardware store.
Big jubilee clip also works and is probably slightly cheaper and more adjustable.
what is the name of the 2:55 (section)
Motorex Oil of Switzerland... What is it? Vaseline = grease?
i have rockshox arygle RC and i dont know how to install it on my bike? :/
No bearings ?
is better a tapered or a 1.5 straight fork?
Extremely helpful!!
Do you do the same thing for the 200mm travel downhill fork?
Can you buy a steering tube replacement if cut to short dose any one know
Anyone know what lubrication to use
If headset bearings are sealed (they usually are), then you can just spray the thing with WD40 to displace water. The grease here is not all that important, read the author's answer below
LegionnaireENR34 then you never answered my question

Thanks but this was 62 weeks ago already have a new bike lol
I wish you would show us how to press the internal headset in.
:(
To inspect/show the bearing.
You blew past the "tool to hold the tube in the vise". What tool? What is it called? Where can I get one?
Where I can get those spacers? They fit in a bmx fork?
That look like an aluminum steer tube. Will the same cutting technique work on a chromoly fork?
hacksaw wont do. need a high speed power tool with abrassive wheel the kind that looks like brown fiber glass wheel.
v10moped I used a simple metal conduit tubing cutter to cut a chromoly steer tube. Worked like a charm, and you always get a perfectly straight and square cut.
@@Patrick94GSR Thanks for that tip! I just tried it too! As you said, works like a charm! Nice clean even cut on the chromoly.
You know what they say: Measure twice, cut once :)
Thank god for Wal-Mart rofl!
The tool you used as a guide to saw the tube, what does it call?
Works well but bowl is really shallow.
Well spotted wildkathappy !
Excellent even for me
What kind of warehouse is that?#
My forks were stolen, so I have no lower crown race. Do new forks come with one, or will I need to buy it separately?
It usually comes with a new headset and is made to fit with it.You probably can find a replacement for it.
Question: why cut 3mm below the line? Wouldn't it result in a situation where the part of the stem that has the upper bolt is not clamping down properly with the steerer tube?

Because the blade is 3mm or has a 3mm bite
Follow the video. Use proper headtube cups/bearings and it should be fine.
no need bearing?
+Boon Chon Lim
They are there, but they are sealed, not the open one. At 02:22 he put a grease on top of the top bearing.
they are sealed bearings and they are pressed into the frame
You missed the part where you grease up the stem and screws of the fork??????
hi. i just want to know if it is possible to change my size 26 fork into size 27?
That will change your bike geometry, which might be a bad idea since your frame is designed for your current geometry.
+Nathan Brooks exactly that's what I do. rn I'm going from a hard fork a suspension fork.
you don't usually do that unless they are old forks, brand new = no need
Lose the stem and fully tighten the star nut on the top. This should pull the fork up into the head tube.
Do you realize that you cut your fork without use of the proper slot in the fork cutter clamp?
fuck the system
I think his saw blade was too thick and wouldn't fit in the slot (i.e. using the wrong blade for the job).
Psssh. I would have used a sawzall. lol
rastaj99 démontage boîtier shimano ultegra
hi guys wat lenght of stem in this video?tnx
looks like 50-60 mm
That fork will wobble. You need to put a little bit of weight on the top tube so the fork is firmly pressed against the frame.
what’s that pipe holder thing called
cody polsen saw guide
im glad i ask. thank you so much
Use spacers instead of stem to tighten top cap
Thanks
Thank you..
straight forward , the easy way. campy style headset.
so these new forks use a sealed bearing nowdays?.. damn, I think I might be getting old..
I can't find the cover plate you mention anywhere
Hey i am looking at replacing my forks and my question is does the star mount come with the new set of forks and if not how do i remove it from the old forks
The crown race should NOT have a split on it !, and needs to be pressed on.., and the fangled nut should be at least one centimeter countersunk .. peace
You don't sound Chinese. Why no grease?
Tank you
You didnt include how u punch in the the crown race, which is the hardest part if your doing it your self. Waisted my time.
Didn't you saw it at 0:20? It is the split ring and therefore easy to slide on.
I think he mean ball bearings.
Gökmen Emre Keskin The ball bearing was already pressed in the head tube.
+bikebook I know. Sealed one. But he maybe confused by not seeing balls with grease.
거 참 ... 말도안되는 영어실력으로 유튭링하는 생퀴네 ...
lollllll..nice answer mate....
because the bearings and cups of the headset need to be greesed so when you turn ur bars there isnt metal on metal
спасибо БРОтан
Motorex Oil of Switzerland :-)
All you need is a straight cut. How you do it doesn't matter.
helpful thx
You are either too close to your mic or its a low quality mic, because I can't understand what you are saying.
