- I show how to make a cheap and easy homemade DIY star fangled nut setter tool to drive a star nut into the steerer tube of threadless forks. Actually, I build two different versions, and use one to install a star fangled nut. This will a allow you install a starnut without an expensive special tool.

how can anyone give this a thumbs down?
Thanks for the tips!!! Simple, cheap and I like it! Those dislikes are probably made by the bike tools sellers.
Bicycle G.O.A.T, rjguy is the very best..love all his videos n clever diy... nothing he can't fix on the cheap...❤
Dude you just saved my bacon! I bought everything I needed to fit a new fork for the 1st time so imagine the tools I bought and I’d forgotten the star nut setter so this video really is good. Thumbs up and a subscription from me 👍🏻 keep it up man, really good video
Me too! RJ rules.
King of homemade tools saved me a ton of time a few times on a few special tools I didn’t have or time waiting for them to come in for
Brilliant! Thanks for all your tips. I'm a part-time home bike guy who really has learned a lot from you. Thanks
very helpful explanation and method. i like the way you started with the park tool so the concept of how it has to work is perfectly clear, then applied that to your method. this enables the viewer to either follow your method with confidence, or come up with his own method. much better than videos that may show elegant solutions but skip over the concept
Man that that went in way more easier than the one I just did on a new fork.
Best hack tool ever! I was about to start driving in a new star nut, and bumped into this video. Thanks so much!
I just used this technique. Thank you!!
That wood mallet is badass! Classic! 👌
I tried it and it works great
This inspired me to try bolting the starnut onto an old socket to fit just inside the fork tub so the guide is on the inside (no big sockets I'm afraid), with a plastic sleeve on the outside of the fork tube (old paint roller handle) and a socket driver inside the plastic to drift the nut in. It went a bit off direction so I used an old bolt to bang it sideways occasionally to get it back on line so I didn't mess up the good bolt. Mission accomplished - Thanks RJ.
Wanted to thank you for this video RJ! Yet again, you've provided content that helped me fix an issue. This time, my mid-90s Trek 7000 had some vibrations up front. I loosened the stem bolts and began cranking on the stem bolt to re-seat the fork into the bearings. It just kept spinning and spinning, which I knew wasn't right. I took off the stem and the expander nut had nearly completely pulled out of the fork tube. So, I pulled it out, bought a new one, and within 5 min of coming home it was installed. Job done. Thank you for creating such helpful content!
Great tip thank you
I love you!.....I am just about to do this on a single speed I am doing. Think I will be trying this myself and give you a mention if you do not mind. Great Hack. Thanks Andy
Go for it. Thanks!
Exactly why I love RJ. You rock! 👍
Didn’t want to buy the tool and this is a great idea, thanks man 👍🏻
Just tried the second method. Worked like a charm!
Brilliant ! I used a small axle spacer for depth guage instead of washers . Thank you.
Very good tip RJ.
Genius is always simple. Great and helpful vid. Cheers!
well this a nice practical / technical video in installing a new star nuts using the 11mm and 21mm sockets, i have a set of metric sockets and i will use one of the socket for installing the the star nuts very soon at a depth of 13-15mm from the tip of the steerer tube, thanks a lot for the video..
Many thanks captain!
Great Job!👍🏿
Works like a charm.
Awesome video. Thank you.
You sir, are a genius!
RJ The Bike Guy, I made the star nut tool that you showed in this post. This is the first time I made a tool and success drove the star nut into my new front suspension fork. I am so happy because I could not get the bike repairer to do it. He said that he did not have the special tool. I think he does not want to do it. What a lousy repairer. Thank You.
About to install mine
That is clever mate. On it this afternoon.
Brilliant 👍👍
Thanks for providing a quick and dirty (and cheap) alternative to a specialized start nut setting tool! When navigating a new, unknown territory it ti so nice to have an experienced guide. Well done, and thank you.
Watched the video then did exactly the same myself. RJ is THE Bike Guy.
Freaking genius. In few days gonna be getting a new fork and this video is great.
Friggin' brilliant! Thank you , sir. You just saved me some aggravation.
I made one of these using a PVC cap (in my case - 1").
I drilled a hole in the center and put in a similarly threaded bolt. On the other side, I used three nuts (one to hold bolt in place and the other two as spacers (rather than washers). Then I put the cap onto a 1"' piece of PVC
I threaded the Star Fangled on and tapped the nut into the steerer tube.
Thanks for the hacks, it's way better than spending $25.00 on a tool i would only use once..
I'm new to bike build, I have a question, is the Compression Plug Star Nut does the same function as a Star Nut? thanks
Bike shop wanted to charge me $30 to replace it... No thanks, bought the part for $2 bucks and watched your vid. Thanks!
Awesome hack dude =-D
how deep should be the star nut from the top of the steerer?
Just found out my star nut is knackered. There was a bit of play in the steerer so I decided to investigate and found out the star nut was not set in the fork tube square and had was only gripping on 3 of the flanges on the top star. It had sheared off from the bottom star so was barely doing anything.
Now I need to replace.it which is cheap but the tools are expensive £36 for a park tool version. Also they are hard to come by at the moment even these are sold out in most places.
RJ's a god damn genius!
Awesome
legend
My replacement 1 inch MTB steer tube for did not come with a star nut. I cannot find a store that sells a star nut for 1 inch fork anymore? Every star nut sold now is made for a 1-1/8inch fork.
New sub here :) and first and for most, great job on your projects. Very clear spoken and thorough with your information, and you make each step easy to understand. You have become my go-to on how to repair bikes, and/or even rebuild old frames to give them new life.
You sir, have ignited an old flare on mine, respect.
That's awesome.
Thanks for the informative video. As always very useful. I tried following your directions but i did something wrong because it went in crooked and had a dickens of a time trying to straighten. My question is how do you straighten one and is it ok to do so, or should I start over with a new one. Fyi... it seems to be working but want to make sure. Again thanks for the videos and any info you may have is greatly appreciated.
You can't pull the lower side out. You can only push the higher side deeper. Then will it be too deep? Not sure.
Nice...👍👍
i probably will not ever have to do this because usually the used forks that I would buy will already have it installed. I stumbled on this video after watching the fork crown race video and I'm just beside myself RJ! You need to start a go fund me page and if everyone who is helped by your videos would donate a dollar each time they watch your videos. Let's do the math....213K subscribers x $1 or I let's just add up all the views from all your videos.....I don't think any calculator screen will fit that number. Seriously, more than youtube is paying you right? :)
I love these simple tips using things most people already have around. So much better than blindly hammering in the star nut by the thin bolt.
The 41 people that disliked this either work for Park Tools or are associated with them
U so freaking genius
I HAVE AN AVENTON THEY SEND ME the front forks without the starnut built in they told me that the starnut is interchangeable what a bunch of bolony.
Nice
THANKS! ;)
OMG RJ, thank you for the tip - I was planning to install a new fork, with you tip DIY is really helpful - Thank you
Once again THANKS RJ ........... another Great vid...... you're the man ......... please keep up the great work
Could you please do a detailed video of how to clean a bike without taking everything apart?
Deepclean is impossible that way
@RJ The Bike Guy, crap I used a punched and messed up the star nut it still holds but noticed my fork had some play after a few rides.
I doubt that is the star nut then. The star nut is used to tighten down the cap which pushes down the stem to adjust the headset. Once the stem is tightened, that locks in the adjustment of the headset. I would loosen the stem, tension it down again, and re tighten the stem.
RJ The Bike Guy Awesome ☺
This was exactly the info I needed man thanks so much !
1:27 I was this " " close to losing my $h1t if you had used a 10mm deep socket, heck even a standard 10mm used for anything other than it's intended purpose is simply WRONG! BTW, of all the MacGyver toolies on YT out there I place you either #2 or #3...good stuff man, appreciate your time and effort. Thank you.
Wow man, great idea! Thank you for sharing :-)
Regular Guy Mountain Biking haha you are everywhere!
I’m enjoying the bike so far ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
Best guide. btw 11mm socket is tiny too wide (interferes with the "wings" of the star nut. I have used 10mm socket and fits better. Overall screw dedicated expensive tool, your advice how to make home made tool you will use few times in your life is the best :)
Great video. He even talks in metric! What more do you need.
Very helpful video
Do your finger nails hurt?
Who cuts them that short?
it hurts just to look at the right thumb! uuuuggghhhhhhhh!
Great idea! You just saved me about $35 CDN
Thank you
Lol I just used a hammer and flat head screw driver to carefully dink mine in, got it set perfectly after a bit of careful manipulation. But using the socket is a good idea, will defo do that next time, looks much easier!
i knew you would have a hack for this. thanks dude, excellent
Genius, as always, half of my tools were made from your ideas, lol.
You helped my 14 yr old son and I on his racing build. Thanks sincerely!
this is about the second time you saved me throw your videos.
the first time was with a freehub that was spinning both ways. it was on a bike i just bought second hand online. hadn t had a problem with the hub since, the bike is hauling ass.
now i m adding a newly bought fork for some other bike, i m at the star nut part. cheers!
actually 3 times, with this one also: ua-cam.com/video/xRIFqasCOSg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=RJTheBikeGuy
"A centimetre and a half", I love the mix of metric and imperial, I guess you mean 15mm 🙃
What ingenuity!
Ok, so I made a nut fangler, but couldn't get it to engage with steerer. Decided to add a guide, found a socket close to internal diameter added it to tool and sure enough nut went in. When I undid securing bolt, nut and washers tumbled from lower end; but so far socket refuses to coop
a tool cost 25$ buck? lol you might as well go to your local bike shop and support them of you're to use it once in your life time
Favorite self-made bicycle tools channel! Thanks!
How deep should a star nut go?
That was covered in the video.
I'm new to bicycles and I just found your channel and you saved me so much money. I wish I can buy you a beer or something, you are a genius when it comes to these bikes and I'm sure you're a genius when it comes to anything. Thank you so much since I'm only building one bike I would have spent so much money on tools. But my bike is coming out flawless thanks your videos.
This channel is so underrated hope you get more traction.
Thanks again RJ.
very nice but just take it to local bike shop you don't want to hammer it and get it lopside
Que chingon míster RJ thanks y regards from Mexico
Dude. You seriously saved me here. Thanks for this.
Great tutorial, But I will never have star nut, in my bikes, I will only use a compression plug,I am currently using Hope Head Doctor.
they can be reused, and are easy to install and remove.
For some reason a star nut became skewed on my xc bike, maybe it's Marzocchi's fault, bad star nut & steerer combo maybe, I don't know, maybe it can happen with others, so far It had only happen once.
I have a half inch socket. How far should I drive the starnut??
Hm. I've changed a lot ahead sets on many bicycles. Never needed an expert tool to bring it in straight. My tools are: a hammer, a piece of wood, the ahead stuff. I attach the top cap and screw the screw in. Hammertime. Unscrew for 5 mm. Hammertime. Unscrew another 5 mm. Hammer it in and you are perfectly done.
Awesome, I tried the 2nd diy tool variant, and it worked like a charm! Big thanks!
I made the 2nd diy tool shown too because it is easier.
WOW!!!! EXCELLENT. Thank you much because I'm on a star nut into the fork ATM & was having problems. Yes I gave a thumbs-up & subscribed.
I just use a small screwdriver and a hammer. not rocket science. great video!
William Hitchens my question is how do you know how far you go down with it
This amazing! Such a great hack
Just got to this stage on my new forks today.
Thanks for saving me the time trying to work out a cheap hack!!!!!
The 48 ( at present ) thumbs down will be from agents of Park Tools, who make great products, but are so over-priced.😆😜
For a more permanent solution you might use a bushing instead stack of washers.
where did you buy that fork clamp adapter for your vise ?
thank you so much sir, it was a brilliant idea ❤❤❤.
Nice video... It helps! Thanks!!
Wow, you're going to make replacing my fork affordable, I was scared about all the special tools but I'll just waddle up to home depot and build this and the press, I'll check your page for a crown race press hack too lol.
Very helpful video. Thank you
