So you get a loop where you release 64, then you release an experimental followup that flops, then nintendo is too scared to touch the series for several years, then when they get comfortable again it's been so long they feel they need to re-introduce the series to people as the kids who played the others are now in their 30s, so you release the game that's pure to the essence of what Star Fox is as a baseline so you can expand upon it in a followup. That baseline is 64. Then you move onto a sequel where you experiment and everyone hates it and the cycle begins anew. Zero is interesting in that it's both a reintroduction AND an experiment everyone hates that kills the series again.

I don't think it's that Star Fox 64 can't be topped. It's just that Nintendo got far too experimental with the series while also going years at a time between games. Doesn't help they like to pass the series around to three party devs for 1 game and then never have them touch the series again. My hope for the future of Star Fox is Nintendo focuses on giving it to a third party dev that fits the series while also not going too crazy with experimentation. Give the game Star Fox 2/Command style gameplay and maybe mix it with an improved version of Assault's on foot gameplay and if that game does well keep it with that same dev for more then one game.

It’s a mod for Freespace Open (open source game so it’s 100% free) that reimagines the 64 continuity. The guy got Krystal and Wolf’s original voice actors to reprise their roles for his mod. It’s pretty impressive just how much content there is. The gameplay is a lot of fun, but unfortunately due to engine limitations you can’t have on foot sections (the guy got ground vehicles working, but it’s very janky). The visuals are also a mixed bag with plenty of things being very faithful recreations of their official counterparts, but the character’s faces are UGLY. Anyone reading this should check it out. Just don’t talk about his older Zelda fan projects like Fallen Sage/Time’s Menagerie games that were made in RPG Maker, or his Gerudo Wars comic because he’ll ban you from the comment section (let’s just say if I didn’t know he was like 15 when he made those I’d assume he was a Minecraft UA-camr. There was a lot of really sus stuff involving YOUNG characters like his kiddy waifu Saria🤣🤮).
I've played everything from Adventures to 64 3D (which is pretty much the whole story according to the video premise) and assault is one of my favorite games, but I totally understand how Nintendo got here. The dinosaur planet to Adventures Shift was a significant departure in game play, but it did give us a new character in Krystal and a new story direction. From there, the adventures - assault - command story line is fairly cohesive in terms of each picking up from the last game. Command's nine different endings don't make a sequel simple though, and that's likely the reason the writers said they'd treat it as alternative history and start in the middle, or at least probably not follow any of the endings from that game if they ever chose to continue on that story line. Couple that with the comparatively poor sales (assault and command were both less than a million units) and a desire to showcase the 3DS with nostalgic classics 5 years later, and you get 64 3D. After another 5 years, it's now 10 years since you've had any new starfox story, and you probably need to recapture the audience for that type of game, so you go back to what works (ie 64) and try to go from there. Unfortunately the declining interest In the starfox game style and low wii u sales meant that both zero and guard fell far short. If I were Nintendo, I'm not sure what I'd do either, and frankly that's a shame.

Really the problem is that StarFox 2 never came out as originally intended cause if it did people would see that starfox isn't necessarily an on rail shooter but just simply a space shooter. The first game had to be on rails due to limitations but the moment they got around it they dropped it in SF 2. Also common misconception about Adventures is that while yes they took another game and made it a StarFox title, the actual reason is that they were already planning the next game and it just so happened to be an adventure game too. You can find an interview with Imamura that confirms this. Basically after 64 Miyamotos came to Imamura saying that if he his going to make another StarFox game then it should be an adventure game. Imamura got ideas like a 20 year time skip, peppy retiring and Fox on the ground with a blaster. This changed to an 8 year timeskip and fox running around with a staff do to time. It probably would have more and longer on rail sections if DP wasn't converted.
Nintendo as a whole never focuses a lot on story on their games Also we all know the real reasons Star Fox fails is due to the bad receptions the experimental games got
I played the SNES Star Fox first, then Star Fox Adventures on GameCube. I never touched Star Fox 64, personally. But I never played any other games in the franchise either.
I would reboot the franchise 😅, but extend the story of the star fox team capturing the last boss and fighting their way back through the galaxy to put him on trial for his crimes. Then Star Wolf breaks him out and then you are back on a chase to re capture him and the StarWolf team through out the galaxy.. i think its perfect because they can use the same stages, but make them harder to the point of falling a mission lets them escape to another part of the map for you to continue chasing until you capture them all 🤷♂️
Miyamoto said that he runout of ideas for Starfox games and wants to move on to new projects. As to why a they can't move on is because some stories aren't meant to continue. For example Shrek and Shrek 2 are pretty good, but Shrek 3 was disappointing. Starfox Assault is like Shrek 2 and Starfox Command is like Shrek 3 . StarFox Guard is like the Puss and Boots film in that it's a new story because it feels like a spinoff.
@@bratpack20 In Entertainment Weekly, article (Shigeru Miyamoto on 'Star Fox' and the Wii U's future). He said (We worked on some ideas around Star Fox back during the Wii days. But the problem was that we didn’t have any new ideas to bring to the game. I wasn’t particularly interested in just making another Star Fox game with better graphics and better sound. So we set that aside back then. This time, as we were doing our experiments, and we found this idea of doing the two-screen gameplay. I was particularly interested in a new style of play, where you’d have the cockpit view on one screen, and you’d have the third-person standard Star Fox view on the TV screen, and how those two screens could interact with one another.) In other words Miyamoto takes gameplay innovations a little too seriously. Rail shooters are extremely restrictive in terms of story telling because the characters are always on ships. In fact rail shooters are dead in general because thier too short. The only reason Starfox has a story at all, it is because he wanted to emulate the British show Thunderbirds. This why puppets were used in the marketing for SF Zero. The good news is rail shooters do exist in indie games. There's also an upcoming story driven project called Omega 6 The Video Game, written by SF artist Takaya Imamura.

Then Star Wolf breaks him out and then you are back on a chase to re capture him and the StarWolf team through out the galaxy.. i think its perfect because they can use the same stages, but make them harder to the point of falling a mission lets them escape to another part of the map for you to continue chasing until you capture them all 🤷♂️
Saying Star Fox 64 is the same as the original, is an insult to the masterpiece that is the original game
Because whenever they do try something different you complain.
StarFox Guard is like the Puss and Boots film in that it's a new story because it feels like a spinoff.
did he actually say this? If so please link. I'd love to check it out!
@@orangeslash1667 Miyamoto seems more interested in media promotion than game development overall. Like movie adaptation and theme park development as I haven't heard him work on a thing.
@@francoperalta5986 It says that he was the general producer of Pikmin 4 and Tears of the Kingdom.
