Im an avid crocheter and i had the equivalent of 4 huge storage tubs of yarn. Random colors. Remnants of projects. Tons i knew I'd never use. I got pretty boxes and got rid of 3 of the 4 tubs worth of yarn that sparks no joy. Donated it to the local school!

Over the past five or so years, I've grown out of some craft hobbies and into others or just changed styles. I've been through several passes of craft decluttering and am now into trying to organize and store what is left. The first pass was to decide if I wanted to keep doing what I had the supplies to do. Cut my crafting hobbies in half. I did keep a box of tools from those crafts I've stopped because most are family heirlooms. I love sewing but was unable to break a mental block for several years after my Mom passed away. I let go of some fabric but decided to keep everything else until my block was cleared and I was able to return. After 8 years of not touching a machine, I am back sewing and truly enjoy it. For the past few weeks I have been sorting and categorizing my sewing tools and supplies. I will be able to send off a few more things but I am glad I kept everything as I knew I would come back to it. Once I had decided what I was going to keep pursuing and what I had lost interest in it was easier to let things go.

I blended a few days -- my storage area was the closet in our guest room/my sewing room. I was going to do one corner, but ended up hauling out everything. It cleaned up easier than I expected, and faster. I also resolved not to store other things (like all the photos I need to sort through...that's coming up, right?!) in that closet, except for the vacuum. Found new homes for some things, threw out the useless scraps, even got rid of extra pillows that were next to the closet...huge win for days 17 and 19 - THANK YOU!!!

Good one! Thanks! I was sweating bullets trying to get rid of some craft supplies I have collected over the years. I will now put aside my absolute fave treasures that I will allow myself to keep only if I part with most of the unused items. I am 70 and have some spools of ribbon for 50 years! I no longer have a sewing machine or a place to use one so…..good-bye zippers, bobbins and machine feet and maintenance tools! If I donate enough I can keep my most beloved embroidery floss collection. Thank you!

What a good idea to turn the thinking around to giving ourselves permission to keep items! I always love seeing your Audrey 2 on the shelf and am glad it was in your keep pile. My late beloved father made one for a prop when our son performed “Grow For Me” in an Eisteddfod a few years ago. I’ve held on to it but it’s deteriorated over the years and is quite a sad display. So , after checking that I had a photo in all it’s former glory, I’ve bitten the bullet and let it go. Now I’m not guilty about how sad it used to look and can put something out that’s positive and uplifting 😍🎭

I'm an artist and I work in a lot of mediums from wood carving to watercolor. Letting any of them go is probably the hardest thing for me. I did give up costuming and rug making. I am going to get rid of my sewing machine. I tell myself someone else could really use and enjoy it. I'm just not using it anymore. Of course I did just buy the cutest antique hand crank sewing machine so I can still sew something if I need to! It's beautiful, much smaller than my regular sewing machine and it doesn't use electricity. I feel good about downsizing to one tiny machine and a spool of thread. I'll still be able to sew when I want.

    • @donnab2810
      @donnab2810 3 роки тому +2

On most of my crafts when I need new tools or have to replace some I've been going for smaller, non-electric things. I sew too much now to not have an electric machine but if I have no deadline and it is a small item I will sew it by hand.

But I have other hobbies like cookies decoration and I think that I could declutter many things because I don't decor so much now. Thank you for your videos 💕

My goal a couple of years ago was always to making paper projects as beautiful as possible, but if I think about it now, my goals for a hobby would be doing something relaxing, easy and with quick results. Thank you for the permission to keep stuff occasionally. hahahaha. My home is tidy and fairly minimalist.....EXCEPT for my craft area. I have a craft work desk and all supplies in a closet. While the supplies are fairly organized, it looks messy and I decided that it is ok. I'm ok with one area that doesn't look great as long as I can close the door on it since it is where I can be creative while in the mood. That being said, when I get some new craft item (usually paper related) and there isn't a place to put it away, I know its time to purge some stuff.

@@kimberlyhoward7896 While I was collecting my craft supplies by category I found loads of UFOs (UnFinished Objects). I'm having a hard time to decide whether to keep, donate or toss. I just started last week in one category to sort out the UFOs. These things are all too nice, even though I haven't worked on them for a very long time. Would I have to buy more supplies to finish it and will I finish it soon (uh oh, that's a term a lawyer would use, which I'm not). Rather, does this abandoned project still resound with you? For myself, I have decided that if I need to buy more supplies to finish it, it's a candidate for tossing, if it still rings a bell, and you need only need say, a 5g tube of beads, or one spool /hank of yarn and you still have the tools to finish it, put it in the UFO box. How many UFOs should you keep? Another tough one. I think it depends if it is part of your favorite craft. You could keep more UFOs of your go-to craft, because the chance of finishing it is greater.
If you are encountering things that you have bought with the thought in mind that you'd want to make it, but never did, donate it if the condition of the supplies allows. Near my apartment is a senior nursing home and a kindergarten. The kindergarten has received over two pounds of plastic beads, plus stringing material. The senior nursing home has received 6 pounds of mostly unused wool and surplus knitting needles.
I admit, I'm lucky. I wouldn't donate if the recipient would have hunt for more to make something out of it. Toss.
I hope I don't sound haughty, I myself haven't finished the decluttering and I'm struggling. Just today I took steps to get help. The quantity is overwhelming.

Isabella Bihy Yes, I have many UFOs. But being crochet projects, I take them out and put the yarn with like colors to use possibly in a more current project. I’ve donated many of the items that I’ve made to others that will use them and charities. I’m currently donating yarns I know I will never use to a young special needs girl who uses crochet to keep herself calm. Also, to her house Mom that has grand babies😊! There are times that I feel guilty for having so many supplies for my hobbies. So I am still going through and really scaling back. I know my adult children wouldn’t want most of it so it’s time to keep only the things I know I’m really going to use😃! My husband understands and does help me create shelves that organize the smaller objects and helps me sort through the 30plus years of accumulated memories. Kids do that. I have 2 big bins in storage of kids papers to really go through and art with. It’ll eventually happen because we really need to scale down what we have😃. Thank you for sharing and chatting with me. You weren’t haughty at all, just knowledgeable and understanding. I’m in the middle of the same struggle. Just trying not to bury my family with the burdens of too much stuff! Have a great day💗🤗!

Doubly difficult when the art/craft supplies relate to a creative business. Getting rid of “my” stuff isn’t hard. However the “business” stuff feels like more weighty decision. That said throwing out dried paint and glue, bent pins and full scissors is pretty easy, so I started with the broken stuff.

Laura, I’m having a hard time getting rid of crochet and cake decorating items, but I am not supposed to do them. I have arthritis, a degenerative disease. Doing them will make my fingers get gnarled faster. There would be a lot of grieving involved.
Yesterday, I was ready to givany comment?e up my yarns and big batch of downloaded patterns to someone on Freecycle. It helped that another beginning crochet person would use them. But I kept all My many crochet needles, a bit of yarn, and the pattern for yarn roses. Just in case I got into the mood. Because I have them, I seem to be telling myself I shouldn’t do it.
Same thing with my big collection of cake decorating bags and tips. Squeezing the bags hurts my hands, yet I just can’t give them up.

Sewing-favorite-lots, things to make Xmas ornaments etc, paints+ supplies, wooden notions, paper crafts, wind chimes, steampunk crafts, native things for crafts. That's enough, I have good intentions..I have things in every room and a small home. No craft room. How do you purge if you like to make so many things? Why does everything have to have been "a mistake"? ?....I don't find this to be the case! . Most of what I am decluttering was 95 percent no mistake at the time.. It added value to my or my families life at the time.. So the things had their usefulness in the past but now they don't anymore serve a purpose due to life changes eg, children growing up and changing... So now I want to declutter the stuff, which I just didn't get around to over the past years, for personal reasons, so now I am!.. I really can't imagine that the most peoples clutter were "mistake buys".. It is more likely that life just got in the way and we just don't find time and energy for exit strategies for all our stuff!.. And so over time it accumulates!..

@@HowToGYST These are such weird times, and you are doing a great job persevering on to make these videos! I'm so looking forward to each new one! It's just MY fantasy to see someone go through a real craftoholics abode someday, and help them reason and refresh a genuine working craft space. Maybe part of a future series? - Hands-on helping friends sort through the decluttering maze? Thanks for all your inspiration. =-) Have a truly wonderful day.

Thank you. =) Cas over on the Clutterbug channel recently uploaded a video where she helped a lady with her craft room (pre-pandemic). Hope that helps. Would highly recommend her channel.

@@HowToGYST Great video. New Subscriber. Did you donate to someone, sale, etc?
I'm ready to do this but I always feel better when I donate to a person. I have Alot stickers, papers, etc that a teacher would love however I'm not sure is it worth it to put a ad out or just donate it to Goodwill. Selling would take for ever and would just keep me keeping it longer. What do you think? Thanks! 😊

@@memekendall3197 Schools are always very grateful for stationery and craft supplies so try calling local elementary schools or preschools. I bet they'd be more than willing to take them off your hands. That's where some of mine goes. 🙂

This the hardest category for me. I see the potential for future projects in every scrap of paper, fabric or doo dad. 🤦‍♀️

Everything has potential. That doesn't mean you have to be the one to fulfil it. ;)

@@HowToGYST 🤯 thank you! This is one of my problem with craft stuff too. I never thought about this (well for things like stamping tools or washi tapes yes, but not for the scrap of things that I can simply recycling... maybe that scrap of plastic will not became a beautiful earring or piece of art but it will be a new bottle 🙂)

@@liviamusolino2573 Yup, that's where I'm at. NOvember helps - I decided I would say no to being the one to recycle all those empty containers...well, maybe not all, but no new ones. And then I saw that I have 3 containers of containers, so more will be going out with the trash tomorrow (don't have recycling here, sadly).

My problem is that I want to get rid of my stuff but I don't want others to get mad at me for getting rid of it. I've bought everything with my own money but my family gets mad at me for wasting money
