My mum grew up in Serbia when it was still Yugoslavia, and rakugo reminds me of the stories she told me, particularly of Bosnian stories about two men named Mujo and Haso. One goes: Mujo was riding his motorbike around a block over and over again, and every time he passed the cafe on the block, he'd call out "Ko ima vaki Kavasaki?" (Who's got a Kawasaki like mine?) And the people in the cafe, fed up with his bragging ask "why do you keep asking?" He says "Do any of you know how to turn this thing off?" Another one goes: Mujo was stopped by the police while riding his bike. The police officer starts telling him "You've got no helmet, no mirrors, no headlight or brake light..." Mujo starts laughing. The police officer asks "What's so funny? These fines are going to cost you a lot of money!" Mujo says "Haso over there doesn't have a bike at all, I'm thinking about how much you're going to fine him!"
The Showa Genroku Rakugo anime is my best anime so far because I was so drawn to it. I would definitely watch a show if I get the chance to travel to Japan 😊
I've only seen a few of your videos so far, but I've already learned a whole bunch! Thank you so much!! I'm just 13 right now, but I've been practicing speaking Japanese so i'll be ready if I get the chance to go! ありがとうごじました
26:42 THANK YOU! Too much of modern society seems to be focused on being relentless towards people we don't like (at least in the west though I hear it can be bad in Japan too). There's no opportunity for growth if no one gives you the chance to grow.
At the same time, there needs to be knowledge of and resistance against cancel culture; once you apologize for something you know to be true or honest because of social pressure, that paints a target on your back. (Case in point: when anime and manga fans wrote a four image long CC warning in English and Japanese and got it spread around Japanese Twitter feeds. That was a huge help in getting manga-ka to stand up for their work.)
every time I see your suggestion to speed up the video I just smile and think "mhhh no" I actually enjoy the speed very much, it's calm and makes me take some time off during my stressful days and the content is interesting enough so it never gets boring :)
My introduction to rakugo was on the variety show AKBingo!. At that time in the show AKB48 members were doing personal challenges occasionally. Minegishi Minami helped write a rakugo story and performed it in front of an audience on one of the episodes. It was really very good...
I think understanding foreign humour is one of the most difficult things for a language learner. This means that if you are just a Japanese learner, you'll hardly understand anything in rakugo and the benefits will be negligible. Once you become proficient, comedy will become super useful for maintaining your language skills, but not until when. I'm speaking from my experience with British and American comedy, therefore I might be wrong.
well every Austrian speaks normal German besides and it's the main language, but the different to our dialects is so big that a German can't understand it.

Hey Shogo! I'd like to ask you to talk about the Yakuza Exclusion rules, or the "cooldown" people suffer after leaving the Yakuza. I know this is a heavy topic, but I think it'll educate the audience about a deeper layer of the Japanese mentality.
I have now watched a few Rakugo videos on you tube , they are brilliant ,I have to have subtitles on as my Japanese language skills are still at very level , thank you so much for showing the way to such a great art form.
I was introduced to Rakugo in English via NHK World. They did a series of Rakugo and Ukiyoe with Katsura Sunshine. I then had the opportunity to see his show live. Before COVID he was doing a show on Broadway in NYC ... he has a lot of English language videos Rakugo ... he is fantastic
Thank You for that video. Rakugo definitly landed on my list of things to do if I ever visited Japan. Your video format is very enjoyable. It is always good to hear and read Your words. And Your conclusion is what makes Your videos a really good lesson.
This was so interesting!!! Storytelling is popular for children in libraries in the U.K., and of course parents read and tell stories to their children a lot too. But it almost sounds as traditional and entertaining as a “pantomime” but much more serious business!
I first learned about rakugo after watching the anime "Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu" around 4 years ago... it became one of my favorite anime of all time and when people ask me for a recommendation for a different anime, it's usually my choice. After watching it I actually started watching live subtitled performances on UA-cam, even though these are quite rare and read about it (actually one of the reasons I would love to learn Japanese). I still find it one of the top types of comedy in the world!
the funny thing is just before I saw MV about rakugo, you tube recommend me a clip of rakugo anime. Two hour later, this show up. Thank You ....I was about to dig more info on this topic
Thank you so much for teaching us about Japanese traditional culture! Your videos are so interesting! I really enjoy learning from you. Keep up the amazing work! 🙇♂️😁
In one video game, Cherry Tree High Comedy Club, there was a man called Manyutei Rakutarou, who was described in the translation as stand-up comedy man, and the main inspiration for the protagonist of the game to become a comedian. We never see him perform in the game, but I suppose it's safe to assume he's a rakugoka :)
Well, video interesting even since the beginning, great job. Also, it seems, it was hard job, making a 30min video about theme you just learned. Admiring
Yes! Thank you! I have heard of this previously and was interested, but this is a better source of information than any other I'd found previously. Thanks again, Shogo-san!
I really like the core of this where you said, "We're all imperfect and we need each others' forgiveness for that imperfection." This is one of my favorite tenants of Christianity...grace. We learn that ALL are imperfect and need forgiveness and that we should forgive each other endlessly. I tell people all the time when they try to apologize to me for a mistake, "Awe man, it's ok! I forgive freely because I need a lot of forgiveness myself."
I think most of the Rakugo-ka have good memories and expert in the literature to learn all the stories and understanding it must be in correct way so the message can be delivered to the audience in the good manner. I listen for yhe first time, I not get the joke or the puns, but as I research the story and listen again and get the message the stories and moral of the story.
These stories are amazing! The US could seriously learn from these stories. I feel like forgiveness for mistakes is a thing of the past in this country. Cancel culture is the new thing and no matter if your apology is legit, you get dragged through the mud and you’ll be kept apologizing for your mistake, no matter how small, for the rest of your life it seems.
Another amazing video! Thank you so much❤️ Dear Shogo, do you know the book ‚the cat and the city‘? Because I just finished it and one story is about a rakugo master coming from a rakugo family but lost his way due to alcohol and modern tokyo… this story fascinated me so much that I was about to research about this traditional way of storytelling, thank you so much for this informative video🌻
I cannot believe that I had never heard of rakugo before!! I know of most of others acting arts and have been in different shows!! I wonder if there is some type of show where there is either translation or explanation...I know is definitely not the same but a few years back I went to kabuki show with very simple and nice translation system
Great vid! I was wondering if you could cite the resources you used to study up for this video. I’m interested in doing a deeper dive into the history of rokugo.

I'm quite a big fan of long jokes with a lot of setup and I've grown tired of a lot of the mean spirited, cynical comedy that has been popular in recent years, so perhaps I've found something new to cheer me up. While it's unlikely that I'll actually become a Rakugo-ka in my lifetime, given the fact that I live on the other side of the planet, I would like to try performing some of these stories in my native language. Hi shogo I found your Chanel through your videos on katanas(I think), (if it’s not a problem) I was actually wondering is there any books you’d recommend on the topic or on Japanese culture especially on stage arts and things like that thanks for reading if you see this
That is one thing I always found a bit difficult with Japanese comedy. Western and also slavic comedy is usually laden with vulgarity but also irony and sarcasm. All three of which are not common in Japan at all. @@sevenproxies4255 yeah, the stories made me smile, and I'm sure they're funnier in Japanese, but growing up with such a difference in comedy it would be hard for me to laugh the way I do with more western style comedy. For example, from what I understand Rakugo doesn't cover topics like death or conflict, but Irish folk songs talk about drinking, cheating, violence, death, nothing is left untouched, but it's amazing to see how similar the vastly different cultures can be.

I had no idea what was Rakugo, until I watched Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju and in only one chapter i was in love with it
Me too, and Shinigami Rakugo become my favorite just because I watched that anime.
It’s really good!
I watched the anime and I absolutely loved it!
I also learnt about it from there. I keep thinking about "Shikigami" a lot, imagining it in other ways...

The Showa Genroku Rakugo anime is my best anime so far because I was so drawn to it. I would definitely watch a show if I get the chance to travel to Japan 😊
The meanings and metaphors that Rakugo stories use, reminds me of Aesop's fables which also try to pass to the listener a moral for each story.
Fables are very ancient tradition in almost every culture.
Akane banashi brought me here. I love listening to stories and also learning more about Japanese culture.
