  • In this fly tying tutorial Cheech ties the Jigged Olive Willy. The Olive Willy is one of my very favorite stillwater fly patterns, and is well known in the Pacific Northwest as a great damsel or dragonfly imitation. This is a version tied on a jig hook that can either be fished balanced style or traditional style. I use this fly a lot in the mid-summer months when there are a lot of damselflies flying around in my favorite application is with a parabolic fly line. Also, I have tried mixing up colors with this fly, but the olive one always works better than anything else! Create at your own risk!

I have been fishing that fly a bit longer it is well worth your time and expense, get the materials and tie a bunch you can tie them in different sizes I tie them from size 12 to 6 either a standard wet fly hook of a nymph hook and yes you can use a streamer hook if you want . I use mostly nymph hooks in size 8 and 6. These flies will catch everything from pan fish to big browns and small mouth bass and large mouth as well. I fish in Washington state and it's known to be productive in Pass lake just outside Anacortes just before Deception Pass bridge that lake is very finicky most of the time it is a fly fishing only lake single barbless hooks catch and release . One other note the original has a strip of red rabbit fur tied in the front as a sort of wing having a few of those can make your day.

Yup! Red rabbit strip goes on all my glass bead versions. I know he used to tie them half with the red strip and half without. They all work wonderfully. I learned this pattern back in 2002

good morning, Cheech and thanks for this. We are in East TN but do have quite a variety of Damsels in the lower foothills. Can you advise where to locate these dyed pheasant skins??? I have tried J. Stockard and Feathercraft but have not had any luck.
