1995 RetroSkins Highlights: Washington Redskins vs St. Louis Rams

- The rebuilding Redskins reunited with an old friend, former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Mark Rypien, now playing in relief of the Rams’ concussed starting QB for a St. Louis team with fading playoff hopes. Heath Shuler’s tenuous grasp on the Redskins starting QB job slipped away in this one, with RetroSkins favorite Gus Frerotte stepping in for the second half following a hand injury that would sideline Shuler for the rest of the season, and effectively end his disaapointing time with the Redskins. Rumor has it, Shuler didn’t have the smarts to master a pro-football playbook - so, naturally, he went on to become a member of Congress (true story!)
The Redskins overcame early fumble-fingered jitters in this one, rebounding from a 10-0 first quarter deficit with 28 straight points. After Ryp rallied the home team to close the score from 28-10 to 28-23, the ‘Skins defense forced a key fourth quarter fumble off a suddenly very unpopular Rams receiver and returned it for the easiest touchdown ever to silence the crowd and kill the Rams’ playoff hopes.
This was Washington’s first visit to St. Louis since the departure of the Cardinals for Phoenix in 1988. The Redskins went 5-3 against the Rams in their oft-renamed dismally domed stadium before their retreat back to LA in 2016. The perennially patient Kevin Harlan along with loveably excitable Jerry Glanville on the call from St. Louie.

Thank you for posting these!!!
More to come!
What I remember from this game:
Rypien looked about as close to the SB form as he had since '91 in this game..
Shuler's last start as a skin, and I remember him playing really well in this one leading up to his injury..
Shuler sucked a golf ball through a garden hose. No two ways about it. Couldn’t read a defense. Accuracy problems. Turnover machine. So on.
Interesting but great picture quality.
Thanks @RetroSkins for posting these old games. The one game that I have never been able to see either any taped broadcast or extended highlights of is the final game of the 1976 season. Washington was 9-4 and needed to win AT DALLAS to make the post season as wildcard. They did! They beat the Cowpies 27-14. 1976 was just a few years before VHS recorders were common which, I believe, explains why this game has never been posted. I did recently see that the game broadcast of Washington at Dallas from 1975 was posted on youtube...So maybe someone does have the footage. If you ever get that final game from 1976 then I would be eternally grateful if you could post it!
As for the 1995 Redskins they were an inconsistent team that needed more stability and better play out of their QB's. Amazingly they did sweep the Cowboys (eventual SB Champs that year) and finished the year strong winning 3 of their last 4 games, including this game against the Rams. I had high hopes for Shuler when he was drafted in 1994 but, as you mentioned, injuries really set his development back and he just never seemed to get comfortable with the speed and complexities at the NFL level.
Hard to believe that Washington has never had a legit #1 QB that started 10 or 12 years. Joe Theismann was arguably the best QB the team has ever had but he was only entrenched as a legit starter for 7 years (1978 through 1984). The Redskins have never benefitted from having a Manning, a Favre, a Rogers, or a Brady to QB for 12 years straight. GB got Favre and Rogers back to back! Sheeesh.
Anyway...Thanks and keep up the great work :)
I continue to love this channel and reliving the random W's I watched as a kid!!
Later in life Gus Frerotte became a Head Football Coach for John Burroughs Country Day School in Metro St. Louis and went to the State Finals or "Show-Me Bowl" several times after playing for the Rams later in his career. The Show-Me Bowl was played in the Dome back then.
#HTTR. Dear God I hope we get a proper rebrand because I can't even hear the Dan Snyder C-Words brand without absolutely cringing. If it happens, I can perhaps invest my time and money in this franchise I grew up loving again.
Commanders is terrible lol. Hail to the Redskins! Snyder's stench on Commanders is why we need another rebrand at the appropriate time.
The only proper brand is Redskins. But that will never happen and even if it did, the NFL is a complete disaster anyway. You couldn’t pay me to watch it or attend a game. Woke leagues deserve bankruptcy.
Should've went with D.C Hogs or the Washington Pigskins still is call back to the old brand.
@@hershelfowler6257 I like them.
I vaguely remember this game, I remember how weird and disappointing it was to see Rypien as a Ram. I was happy that we won.
B Mitch should be in the HOF
He certainly deserves consideration, being one of the mainstays of the team thru their turbulent 90’s, and a damn good kick-returner / all-purpose player.
@RetroSkins Notable All Time Rankings:
1. Kick Returns: 607
1. Kick Return Yards: 14,014
1. Punt Returns: 463
1. Punt Return Yards: 4,999
1. Returns: 1,070
1. Return Yards: 19,013
2. All-Purpose Yards: 23,330
31. Yards per Punt Return: 10.8
The Shuler years. Sigh. Interesting novelty game though, thanks to Rypien’s opposition.
Do you have 1996 Redskins at Rams? That game was played on my birthday that year.
We will return to the dome to honor your birthday some day soon.
@@RetroSkins Thanks so much! I really love this channel. It's amazing! The quality of the 1995 Redskins at Rams game is great!
how different would the end of the 90's been if Frerotte didnt slam his head into the wall?
Probably not much different than how it turned out.
@@fantasticvoyage262 you're right
I wonder how many pots of coffee Kevin Harlan drank to work this game after calling boxing late into the night before 800 miles away?
Jerry Granville was all the caffeine he needed.... Probably a Granville blood transfusion...😂
@@robertsheetz6067 That is quite humorous.
Apologies for the occasional repeating glitches that appear in two areas - those are not in the original uploaded video footage. Maybe something to do with how YT processes videos after being uploaded? 🤷🏻
Was this the first time we ever had to face one of our former super bowl QBs? I think Joe and Doug retired a Redskin.
If you wanna get technical, we played against Jay Schroeder a few times
@@CptChaosSidekick ig he played a few snaps in XXII
Hindsight is 20-20. But if only Washington would have traded down and got more picks. It was clear since their rookie seasons that Gus was much better than Shuler. But they kept trying to play Heath because of where he was drafted.
It kinda reminds me of the Bills in the late 90s/early 2000s with Rob Johnson/Doug Flutie. They didn't draft Rob Johnson, but they traded a 1st and 4th to get him, and they gave him a $25 Million contract. That same year they signed Doug Flutie as a free agent. They kept trying to make it work with Johnson eventhough Flutie was clearly the better option. Flutie was let go after the 2000 season, and Johnson was QB1 going into 2001. Needless to say, it didn't work. Johnson was let go after that.
Rypien was a good QB but he wasn't very athletic.... He did fumble a lot.... Even when he was in Washington....
Yeah improvisation really wasn't his thing. But in '91 when Washington won it all, he didn't have to improvise because the O-line he had in front of him was really good. Historically they had one of the best seasons by an OL. They only allowed 9 sacks during the regular season, and they allowed none during the post-season. Rypien's strength was the deep ball, and with that kind of OL protection to go with the weapons he had at WR, it was easy money back there.
