Been using topping d10s in my SQ system in my car,In your opinion like does this sound better SQ wise then the topping d10s when ran spdif out to helix dsp?
Is the volume also controlled with your steering wheel controls? And if not do you have a recommendation for one that does or have volume controls. I have a DSP that doesn't have a controller yet, supposedly there's one coming out. Thank you and great content don't you know lol
Have you tried to play hi-res. I have been testing these things for a while. Started in 2019. What I found so far is that the apple devices are limited to 24bit/96Khz tracks. If you keep your device on lossless and not hi res there is no issue. I have found that USB-C devices that do USB-C 3.0 or higher can push out the full 24bit 192Khz. Signal out via optical device like the PO100. Currently researching DACs, DAPs and digital interfaces. I want to try the Cubilux USB-C to optical adapter seems to be purpose but for the application we are trying to implement. You can also us a USB-C dongle to get power and output digital signal.
For 24/192 it depends on what your source is and if you’re going analog or digital out of it and then it also depends on what DSP you have as most will only do 24/96 anyways. Some will take the 24/192 and down covert it to 24/96. The Brax will do 24/192 and the high end Zapco’s and a few others. I’m more on the recording than if the track is hi res which I couldn’t care less about as there are so many poor recordings of so called hi res tracks that are not really even hi res. If you’re taking strictly Apple I have played 24/192 out of several iPhone’s and IPads going through the PO100 Pro and Topping D10S and D10B with the camera kit and straight to the device and then coaxial digital out into my DSP.
Thank you, much appreciated! I’m trying to work with some companies to get more products to review, but it’s tough when I’m a small channel. There’s a lot of products out there I would love to get my hands on but can’t afford to buy everything 😆
Thanks for the qualitative review, I have one and agree with you that the build quality is less than desire. The unit tested well on ASR for digital interface PO100 Pro, not so well on AK D/A model. It's a great unit for USB to Toslink/Coaxial converter. I use Anker 100W USB-C cable output from Fiio M11 Plus.
It’s definitely a good product other than the build quality. I never tested it with my DAP’s, only the iPhone and iPad which produced excellent results. I would like to see someone make a high end product similar to this just to see if there would be much of a difference in SQ. I know there are home products like the Matrix but there not ideal for working in a vehicle
might be a little late on this one but you might still help my case. I recently got a pair of powered wifi speakers and the only input I can use to connect them to my computer (full windows sound) would be either optical or RCA (doesn't have other physical inputs, only those and ethernet+wifi+bt) but I don't have a DAC and my laptop obviously doesn't have an optical out. I was looking at the fiio k3 but than can "only" do 24bit/96kHz over it's optical out port. then I looked at the soundblaster X4 which can do 24bit/192kHz but that thing has so much software stuff and what not that I'll never get to use so it's a bit of a waste. so far this is the smallest and cheapest device (still from a known brand) that might just do the trick. this says it can do up to 24bit/192kHz on optical/coax, as well as take in even higher than that (but kind of unnecessary to me). has anyone used it for this purpose (or you for that matter) and is able to confirm that it can indeed output these bit/sample rates? just want something basic/small/cheap and so far this is the best option on paper. I know most services (tidal, qobuz, etc) will serve you only up to 24/96 anyways, and that's the highest format of most of the flac albums that I got anyways, but it's still nice, and somewhat future proofing, to know you could do a bit higher later on, hence why I kind of abandoned the fiio k3 option which costs about the same. can get this for about 70€ and the fiio for about 85€ as of today.
@pxKappa Most streaming Music services do 24/192 Apple, Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon etc… The SMSL PO 100 is strictly a digital transport so you need a DAC unless you meant the AK version?
@@CarAudioHorizons as far as I know there's no need for a DAC because USB is digital just as the optical connection. I don't need to convert the signal to analog, which is the case for the AK variant (from USB to RCA). as long as it gives me a way to send data over optical (which my laptop doesn't have) that's all I need. I believe it achieves just that. 👍 I just wanted to know if it's capable of those claimed sample/bitrates when I set it up to send all my laptop audio through it, including playing high bitrate tracks over the USB to optical connection going to the active speakers. I'm guessing it'll show the PO100 Pro as a playback device on the laptop and not what it's connected to. I've seen it tested with 48kHz and it worked flawlessly, so if it can handle at least 96kHz I'll live just fine with it. you're doing on the car basically the same thing I want to do on the laptop. you don't want BT sound so you found a way to "transport" it, as you called it, over a wire (receive from data and play it over USB to COAX digital). on my case I want it to receive USB sound from the laptop and send through optical with full quality, whatever it might be set to, up to those 192kHZ. sorry if I didn't manage to explain myself too well the 1st time 🙏
@@pxKappa I’m not sure of your entire set up but the SMSL PO 100 Pro will go up to 192kHz and it displays the colour for the sample rate. You can download the manual as it tells you all this there. I’m currently using it right now only I’m using Coaxial Digital and it plays everything it says it does. I wouldn’t worry too much about the difference between 24/96 and 24/192 as you will never hear any difference even on expensive equipment as it’s more to do with the recording.

Thanks for the very informative video, Dave. Quick Question if you have the time. I'm looking at something like this as a way to stream digitially to a DSP amp (probably an Audison Forza) for a system build in an older car (1995). My intent is to use my iphone in place of a traditional headunit, mounted up in a location that is easy to see and reach from the driver's seat. Totally tracking on the requirement for the camera adapter to have both sound output and power input at the same time, though in theory I guess you could also use an inductive charger as well, which I already have in my phone mount. Volume would be handled by the DSP amp control interface, mounted in factory single DIN headunit location. My question is regarding simplicity of use. I don't want to have to do all of the motions described in order to set the system up for use each time I get in the car. I want to be able to just plug the cable in, bring up Tidal on the phone, and go. Would that be the case provided I don't use bluetooth etc ( car doesn't have any of that of course), as no change from the last use case would be required? Or would I still have user inputs required every time because the unit was powered off and/or the phone was using a different output for my headphones, etc? I don't often use headphones so only having to switch in a case like that would be manageable. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
@@CarAudioHorizons Thanks for the extremely quick reply. I'm referring to the steps you covered leading up to around the 7:20 mark, at which point you had to switch Tidal from Bluetooth connection to the SMSL Output. I suspect that if you don't mess with Bluetooth connectivity for your factory radio display, you don't need to worry about switching to the SMSL output every time?
@@CarAudioHorizons Yes, I understand that. But I'm asking whether utilizing that feature is what introduces the necessity to switch the output on Tidal. I suspect it does, but I don't want to make assumptions. Sometimes systems have weird defaults that can become a pain in the ass in unusual use cases like this.
Hi there how are you Question I'm thinking about upgrading my old fiio x7 to a fiio m11s I used the fiio coax output directly to coax input on my helix mk3 The question is is it better to upgrade to the fiio m11s or is the SMSL PO100 PRO a better option And then use it with my iPhone 12 So in combination with an Apple adapter What do you think gives me the best sound quality? Please let me no Regards Stefan
The M11s coaxial digital output is worse than the original M11 coaxial digital output. The SMSL PO100 Pro is the better option. FiiO has went downhill ever since the launch of the M17 which was it’s last decent product with regards to DAP’s.
Not sure what you mean by “all of the motions described in order to set the system up”?
@@CarAudioHorizons Thanks for the extremely quick reply. I'm referring to the steps you covered leading up to around the 7:20 mark, at which point you had to switch Tidal from Bluetooth connection to the SMSL Output. I suspect that if you don't mess with Bluetooth connectivity for your factory radio display, you don't need to worry about switching to the SMSL output every time?
@@TheAlanFish The Bluetooth connection is for track skip, as in the steering wheel controls which I talked about, it’s not for audio.
@@TheAlanFish Not sure what you mean by switch a feature on Tidal? Tidal is Tidal. I’m honestly not following what you’re asking.
Great video!! Will it works with an helix mini ?
Yes, you just have to use the optical digital output into the your helix mini optical input.
Hi there how are you
Question
I'm thinking about upgrading my old fiio x7 to a fiio m11s
I used the fiio coax output directly to coax input on my helix mk3
The question is is it better to upgrade to the fiio m11s or is the SMSL PO100 PRO a better option
And then use it with my iPhone 12
So in combination with an Apple adapter
What do you think gives me the best sound quality?
Please let me no
Regards
Stefan
The M11s coaxial digital output is worse than the original M11 coaxial digital output. The SMSL PO100 Pro is the better option. FiiO has went downhill ever since the launch of the M17 which was it’s last decent product with regards to DAP’s.
There is only one DAP on the market right now under $1,000 US I would even consider and it’s the Hiby R6 Pro 2.
Thanks for the reply 👍
unfortunately the tidal app and Apple Music are no longer working on the fiio x7 mark ii
otherwise it's a great device
Unfortunately outdated
I ordered the SMSL PO100 Pro
just gonna try it with my iPhone
Hi Dave how are you
I saw you’re video on UA-cam of the sml po100 👍👌🏻
I direct ordered one to
I use it in the car with an original Apple adapter,
And use the coax out to my helix mk3
It sounds good
but somehow the adapter no longer works
it still charges the iPhone
But no music
I happened to have an old non-original adapter lying around that usually works, but sometimes not
I run iOS 17.03
Maybe you have an idea whats going on 🤔
I hope you can help
Regards
Stefan
@@81stefan1 Not sure about the older PO100 as the PO100 Pro works fine as I have used it for 3 months off and on with no issues. I mainly just use Apple Music though as when I do use it it’s with my IPhone 13 Pro Max.
@@CarAudioHorizons
Im also using the po100 pro version
With my iPhone
Would I need this device? I have an SP2000 and Helix DSP Ultra. Or is this only for phones?
I would run the SP2000 analog into the DSP. That being said the SMSL does an excellent job and is cheap so you could always try it and see which you like better. The SP2000 is one of the best sounding DAP’s of all time.
Has anyone managed to make it work with PS5? I set it to UAC1 and the PS5 recognizes the interface, but connected to my DAC via Toslink, I don't hear the audio. Thank you!
I'm using UA-cam music. How do I know if I'm playing thru my toslink vs just bluetooth audio? I didn't get that little icon to display like yours did on your iPad for my ipad
Great video. My set up is: iphone 13 pro max (17.3.1), CCK, SMSL, Optical to Match UP10 DSP. I can't get sound from Amazon Music or any other app. The only app I get sound from in the VLC app. Can't get sound from the Onkyo HP player either, which is strange because it's practically the same type of player as the VLC. I'm using a URC.3 which shouldn't make a diffference because I'm getting sound from the VLC app. I've also tried it with having the cck plugged into power. Doesn't make any difference. Thoughts? Thanks in advance
I have the same phone and software version (17.3.1) and I have no issues with sound on any Music App.
Just curious what is the VLC App and why are you using it when you can just use the regular streaming App’s like Apple Music, Tidal etc…
Amazon is the worst music streaming app of all of them as it try’s to play everything at 24/192 even when it’s not 24/192. I tried it a few times and will never use it again.
I take it you have set up your optical digital input settings on your DSP?
Hi dave, if we connect to LDAC bluetooth on DSP, the sound would be the same? or better use this or topping d10s?
Thanks for your sharing. Does it still work when your iphone upgarde to ios17?
I have MATCH DSP. After I upgrade my ipnone 14 pro to iso17, the Camera Connection Kit 3.0 from Apple does not work for the DSP. And I' m not sure if the S.M.S.L PO100 pro could solve this problem.
I have no issues with my IPhone 13 Pro Max and the Apple camera kit with the SMSL PO100 Pro when using it with my Helix DSP Ultra and I’m on iOS 17.0.3
@@CarAudioHorizons I was going Iphone lightening Camera adapter to Helix USB input and iOS 17 broke that on my iPhone 14.
@@ssmith10pn I never bothered with the USB Hec card as I heard it had way too many issues with it and sound quality wise everyone preferred the Coaxial digital input and optical inputs on the Helix DSP’s.
I don’t use the SMSL PO100 Pro all the time as I use my FiiO M17 but I did use it for the review and for a month after that when my brother borrowed my M17 and I never had any issues and I’m on the latest IOS software update 17.0.3. I can even play music with no stoppage even when plugging the lightning to usb cable into the Apple Camera Adapter. No issues at all. Everything I have is always 100% up to date.
Not directly related to car audio but can this adapter support 2.1 channel audio and if so how would it be configured?
I'm curious if this ddc smsl po 100 pro can use the I2S connection port to plug in the hdmi male to type c female or male connection cable.
Hi, I got the same po100 pro using optical out and everything works fine except one issue. I’m using a lightning camera adapter for charging the iPhone and sending signal to the po100 simultaneously. The issue is when i connect the charger to camera adapter the sound stops immediately then I have to disconnect the charger and switch off and on the dsp then the sound starts again. What would be the issue? Can you pls help me on this issue.
Nirvana* mqa isn’t a thing right?
Hi, do I use an HDMI cable for l2s audio?
Yes, you can use an HDMI cable
Has anyone tried this with iOS 17 or a iPhone 15?
iPhone 13 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3 and I have no issues whatsoever
Try it PO100 AK 👌👌👌
