Forge Welding Steel Cable

- Forge welded steel cable results in a Damascus like pattern simply called cable Damascus or sometimes Satan's lace Damascus. Today I am just testing the forge welding procedure for an upcoming project. The resulting blank made in this video could easily be made into a knife.

As you taught building that hardy tool I've got to try this
Thanks
Never seen it done the way you did, very interesting may have to try it myself.
I find it really interesting seeing the time and work it takes to make stuff like this. Keep it up!
You can make all kinds of things. Shelf brackets, hooks, candle holders, door/drawer pulls.... It would add a little extra to any project.
Looking good John, can't imagine what you're up to but I'll be here to find out. Stay safe and keep up the good work. Fred.
Great job welding that cable. Cable Damascus pattern look beautiful. Knife punch keychain anything will cool.👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥
What would I make out of it? Of course, a knife pops into my mind. But if I could get my hands on some larger cable than I have, I would love to forge a dragon out of it. I believe the pattern would lend itself well to the dragon's skin. Hmm, I wonder if I could separate the individual bundles of cable and wrap them around another piece to create a larger diameter starting piece. I think I know what I'm doing Saturday in the forge.
Hello John
Well done i am looking forward what you Made out of this steel
Yours Frank Galetzka
Would make nice carving fork, and pigtail
That looks like you did a great job and I can't think of anything except a knife I guess because it would make such a good one but I'm Shure you will put it to good use
Nice to see you weld up some cable, and you asked, I'd probably make a chisel out of it first then a knife
Very nice and very helpful and information video. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge on. God bless. Keep making.
Well I’m looking forward to mid March
This is gonna make the fanciest hook of the week ever!!! 😉
Good Morning, Mr. Switzer! I wouldn't have thought to compress cable... Can't wait to see what you make of it.
Untwisting slightly before fluxing is a good idea.
I have made a couple of picture frames from cable Damascus, and a business card stand. It looks amazing after the etching.
As always, great work sir. You have a great talent for teaching. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Frames are a good idea
I'd make small Japanese style hammer with a forge welded faces from say 5160 and then etch it
A viking bracelet would be cool.
Great video! I think you should make a minie horse shoe out of it.
Heirloom dividers/compass
A San mai letter opener????
If i've got your skills i would have fold it over and made a tomahawk. Or maybe cut it in 2 pieces. Used one to a wrap around eye and the other to a blade and made viking style kitchen axe!
How do you decide when to use the press vs the power hammer? Just today I made some hooks for my belt grinder out of mower blades. It’s been a while since I made time for playing at the forge. Thank you as always for sharing your knowledge.
I talk about that in tomorrow mornings video on the main Black Bear Forge channel
You’re reading my mind again. I just found some steel logging cable in the back 40. Any tips on getting rid of the rust and if this is something I should even consider on this old outdoor cable?
Soak it in vinegar if you don't know if it's galvanized or not, it will also take care of the rust. Just plain white vinegar
@@Labrador_Forge Thanks Chuck!
What kind of steel, John?...that's a neat piece of work.
Most cable is a simple high carbon steel. Depending on the grade of cable it ranges from 1075 - 1095.
@@BlackBearForgeII thank you,John, I had no idea that this had so much carbon in it.
What are you going to make?
Dragonfly 💗💗
would that Work for making Damascus steel
That is what a lot of people call it. Cable damascus in this case.
@@MarkATrombley good to know and thank you for responding
Not a knife! Door handle or drawer pull maybe.
Damascus?
