In the USA we call the “set screws” button head screws. Set screws do not have a “head” and are typically used to tighten a pulley on a shaft or similar application. The thickened epoxy will also prevent water from getting into the foam core. Thanks for the videos, love your channel.

Dear Sailing Melody family. 😁😁🙈🙈 You completely fooled me because of course I read the title in a subjective kind of way (and also only the first part). 2) 👍👌👏 Congratulations! But of course I missed a crashing champagne bottle. 😁 ;-) 3) Congrats also for now having a wind vane that you wanted to own for quite a long time. I’m wondering if there is a way to make the uprights of the vane diamond shape so that a cut down boom may be able to pass through without having to lower the vane when tacking.
I was thinking this when you lost your Go Pro, ( Sorry to bring it up again!) But then thought it might be handy for Captain Jack when you get to clearer waters. Cut the bottom out of a plastic bucket and silicone in a bit of clear plastic or similar then he will be able to look down into the water at the marine life etc!! Just something I thought might amuse him for a while? Take Care.
Just watching the latest episode and I will say that you need to bear in mind that if you do get attacked by orcas down to the Med then it might be best not to have the wind vane in the water until you are out of the 'danger' zone otherwise you will lose two rudders, both will be taken out. All the best.
Noooo That’s the actual square lense which has a bayonet tie fitting on GoPros You know the front lense on a GoPro is like square, we’ll that bit is actually removable and under that is the bare lense it’s self. Can a folding bracket be spliced into the vertical telescopic "arms"of the red Vane, so it can be dropped to a horizontal 90 degrees? It would thus clear below the mizzen boom. Save any potential whoops-it-went-overboard incidents with the vane.
I wouldn’t be wanting to modify anything hydrovane make. I’m certain they will have investigated all those kinds of possible solutions. It had occurred to me also that would be a handy feature but they’re a very thorough company and will definitely have prototyped or designed things like that and if they had worked then they would be making them. But I’ll ask them if anything like that is in development. It’s a brand new hydrovane though so I’m not inclined to mess with their research and development lol
@@SailingMelody I understand what you are saying; "a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing". Much R&D has gone into the product as you say, and I suppose that there are simpler solutions anyway, e.g. a short safety line for when the vane is demounted for tacking. Glad to see all is going well for such a lovely family, and again thank you for sharing your adventure.
Impressive job with the lettering. So much better than using stick-on letters from the stationery or hardware store and then having them not the correct size or going on straight.
Other option if can make it all fit, move attachment point for mizzen boom sheet further forward on boom so doesn’t interfere when tacking. Actually cut top of stainless tube to drop top mechanism enough to fit under boom in low position then move sheet forward and jobs a goodun.
@@johnhogg9756 that stainless tube isn’t just a tube It’s a very complicated piece of precision engineering with a central shaft and machined bearings top and bottom. You can’t cut it down

(Or potentially order a diff size tube to same effect as getting it to fit under boom - admittedly money is always a concern so may not be an option - but it’s an alternative to getting sails re-cut and shortening boom)

Oh well done and fabulous work on both projects. Shame about the GoPro though (I thought they were supposed to be waterproof to 30 feet!) GoPro, help these very popular creators out please!
It has a foam core yes but I have a cunning plan for that to make sure it’s all good. Still have to do some final adjustment of the lower A-bracket anyway
@@SailingMelody I had a similar situation with my bathing platform, I’ll explain my solution in case it’s useful. I drilled pilot holes from the outside then with a 2” hole saw i cored out the inner skin and foam from the inside. I then filled the resulting hole with bonding paste. Once that went off I put 3 layers of glass about 4” diameter over the top. Then re drill the pilot hole from the outside before opening up to the required size. No doubt you have a plan already but thought I’d share!
You definitely had me and wifey going with that title! You Minxes!! What an interesting episode, amazing work from Andy and Chris, and the Name signs great stuff. Will you have to seal the lettering with something or is the glue salt water proof? Loved watching Jack having a sailing lesson , Wouldn't mind a little boat like that to play on our local river with As always Take Care and Stay Safe xxx
Nice job Andy. Look forward to seeing you try it out when you get sailing again. So was the lower part of the transom foam core or ply or even solid GRP? Weather is awful down South and hoping it stops raining soon. Cheers. Andy UK
Kind of although it’s been around a long time: most wind vanes are the servo pendulum type which use a trim tab to steer the boards main rudder via ropes and pulleys to the tiller or wheel. This has its own independent rudder and works in a different way to the Aries a Windvane or rhe Hasler or other servo pendulum types
Nice episode Andy. I would've thought it would be easier to mount the two bottom brackets and then measure the length of the tubes required. It appeared Hydrovane made the brackets very adjustable. Trying to determine length and position simultaneously I would think is very difficult!
Why is the sticker on starbord from the stipe oceaan melodie to the point from the boot and port side is the other way arround . Keep up the Good work!
😂😂😂 so both sides are readable. If we put the O of ocea Melody next to the gold stripe on both sides then the writing would be backwards on one side. Thanks 😊
I would look into the orca issues you mentioned, apparently it’s not as prolific as it seems, most of the reports are drug smugglers falsely reporting to elude authorities
From a lifetime involved in aviation it was always assumed that “if it can happen, it will happen”, try googling “aircraft accidents, swiss cheese effect”. There will be one time when the vane gets a swipe from the mizzen boom so best figure a solution to prevent that no matter what it takes. Relying on removing the vane beforehand is not really an option and I think you know that.
The orca problem is an issue, if you have your hydrovane down and they attack that and tour rudder, tour stuffed and assuming the orcas haven't done any damage to the hull. This orca problem needs seriously looking into
I'd want a bunch of gussets/fillets/bulkheads around the transom. Extra weight and forces from following seas may be too much for it. Swimming platform and/or dingy davits also in the picture. Too many adverts!
Ahhh UA-cam placed the adds and we haven’t had a chance to adjust them sorry We will be making a bathing platform to add extra support to the hydrovane definitely
@@SailingMelody It's not so much for supporting the Hydrovane, it's strengthening the whole stern structure. Currently it's just a shaped box with no inner framework.

Unfortunately it was in the creators case which makes it not waterproof 🙄
Try magnets on string
It’s 90% plastic. We got it back but the salt water got in through microphone and external battery port and killed it
Looks great .can the hydro vane rudder lift out of the water when not in use .????or wouldn't the orcas just eat both rudders ??? Cheers
The rudder is completely removable yes
Was the lower part of the transom foam cored in the end?
Optimists are amazing but pricey for a good one. Get yourself an old mirror dinghy :)
Thanks for the love and support
Why are you measuring for the vinyl using inches and not doing it in metric ?
Hahahaha shush. We both work happily in either metric or imperial. I switch between the two frequently
buggar you got the name up - have you checked if your anchor bridles will rub the name off ?? fingers crossed
Hopefully it won't but I can always do it on the aft end if its a problem instead 😊
@@SailingMelody all good fingers crossed - it looks good
Safety lines on all tools and Go-pros should be compulsory.
Did you do the official ceremony for the name change ? Also any luck and getting controller off the bottom ? Good luck enjoy your channel
We didn’t but we will. We got the camera back but it’s destroyed from the salt water getting in through the usb and microphone holes
I can't believe you don't have floatation attached to your cameras when filming on water Andy. Hopefully you recover it
Hiya. Yep.that was dumb. We got the camera back but because the side doors were open, for the external battery and microphone, the camera is dead
Nice job Andy. Look forward to seeing you try it out when you get sailing again. So was the lower part of the transom foam core or ply or even solid GRP? Weather is awful down South and hoping it stops raining soon. Cheers. Andy UK
It is foam core as expected but nice and dry 😁
Do Go Pros have a float like you have for your boat engine keys? Sounds like it may be a good idea.
It’s the salt water that kills. In the media mod the doors are open for the external battery and microphone so the salt water killed it instantly
If I remember correctly "Hydrovane" was one of the most mentioned problems in the "Golden Globe Race"
Andy this Hydro Vane is it an upgrade on the traditional Wind Vane ?
Kind of although it’s been around a long time: most wind vanes are the servo pendulum type which use a trim tab to steer the boards main rudder via ropes and pulleys to the tiller or wheel. This has its own independent rudder and works in a different way to the Aries a Windvane or rhe Hasler or other servo pendulum types
Maybe cut the mizzen sail with a high clew.?
It’s definitely an option
Can i put my order in for my boat decals ??
I will have the smoked bacon and egg please.
Nice episode Andy. I would've thought it would be easier to mount the two bottom brackets and then measure the length of the tubes required. It appeared Hydrovane made the brackets very adjustable. Trying to determine length and position simultaneously I would think is very difficult!
Quite possibly we followed the order according to the Hydrovane videos. 🙂
Interesting. Will look into it
That’s not what I read on the Orca FB page but I agree it’s not as prolific as some may believe.
Agreed
Lowering the unit and shortening the boom is the obvious solution
The orca problem is an issue, if you have your hydrovane down and they attack that and tour rudder, tour stuffed and assuming the orcas haven't done any damage to the hull. This orca problem needs seriously looking into
We plan to keep the hydrovane rudder out of the water in that area so we can deploy it we need it! Hopefully we won't need a spare rudder though.
I'd want a bunch of gussets/fillets/bulkheads around the transom. Extra weight and forces from following seas may be too much for it. Swimming platform and/or dingy davits also in the picture. Too many adverts!
Ahhh UA-cam placed the adds and we haven’t had a chance to adjust them sorry
We will be making a bathing platform to add extra support to the hydrovane definitely
@@SailingMelody It's not so much for supporting the Hydrovane, it's strengthening the whole stern structure. Currently it's just a shaped box with no inner framework.
How much did it cost?
The full system is around £6k but is depends on the exact kit for your boat transom but we know it will be worth it on passage 😁
