The way you did it is how I learned it --- for A x B, your push "A" into "B" with your right hand, and your thumb is the resulting direction. I have seen it the opposite to that (B into A), then the thumb is 'UP'. How it's done matters. Have you seen it does different ways? Things don't often work out, which is ok.
