STORYLINE:
Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Russia on Monday on his first official visit since he came to power.
Hu Jintao, who was travelling with his wife Liu Yongqing, was greeted on his arrival by Russian Vice-Premier Viktor Khristenko.
The visit is intended to underline the importance of the two nations' so-called 'strategic partnership' and help forge closer economic ties.
Hu and Russian President Vladimir Putin are due to hold official talks in the Kremlin on Tuesday.
A much-discussed project to build a pipeline to bring crude oil from eastern Siberia to the Chinese city of Daqing and the effects of the deadly SARS virus are two issues on the on the agenda.
The two leaders will also take part in a summit of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, a six-nation group that also includes four ex-Soviet Central Asian republics.
Later this week, Hu is scheduled to attend the festivities marking the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, Russia's former imperial capital.
As well as his wife, the Chinese leader is also accompanied by Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Minister of Commerce Lu Fuyuan.
