This was a great move for the Lions.
In addition to the tactical advantage of having Reader being a dominant and disruptive force in the middle, he's also going to be teaching the younger guys on how to best play the position. This move will be paying many different dividends, and his legacy will be the improvement of players after he has long moved on and left the team.
No it wasn't smart. It was genius. Lions sold out to stop the run, which left CBS and safeties by themselves. Also this goaline defense was suspect. With reader in tow, expect Campbell, Alex and Barnes to make more plays on coverage
I will keep saying this, a good pass rush will mask a bad secondary. If the QB only has a few seconds to throw it ends the big plays.
One aspect of the signing that will help immensely (and you briefly touched on it) is he well help keep QBs from stepping up in the pocket. QBs escaping up the middle were a problem for the Lions. With Reader and McNeil in the middle, it will be harder for mobile QBs to gash us there.

@about the 5:12 mark or so, in the play you're describing, DJ is literally walking the guard back into Stafford 3-4 steps!! 👀 It was a classic VILLAIN move, as Holmes just locked down the interior run defense, AND gets pressure from the pocket up rhe middle drawing rhe double teams as you pointed out! We will add another DE & DT in the draft along with a couple of CBs via the draft or FA. I said last year that the NFL should fear the 🦁's. I am doubling down on that now!! #313GRIT $OnePride 🦁

Who remembers the last game of lions regular season? Lions were up with under 2 minutes so could have kneed it out. But Josh Reynolds needed 8 more yards and 4 more catches for a quarter million dollar bonus. They ran 5 straight screens to Reynolds and got him paid. What player wouldn't want to be part of an organization like that
He and Houston are going to feast.
It was a great move. James houston isnt great against the run, so putting reader next to houston, frees up houston to do what he does best, rush the passer

Thats just it.
Detroit roster is loaded and young so they don't have many holes.
+ they should see another leep from all their young players and I still think Goff can get better year 3 with Ben Johnson
And if their QB went down (many teams fall apart immediately) Detroit with Hendon Hooker might even get better.
Imo dt affect the passing game more than edge if dominant
