I don't think I've ever been so pleased to find a podcast series exists! For me, Jeremy Brett will always be the very best incarnation of Holmes. Love it.

As an incredible fan of Jeremy Brett, Sherlock Holmes and the Granada SH TV series, I found this podcast excellent. I look forward to hearing all of them. Kudos from a serious fan.

Been a rabid fan of Jeremy and Sherlock Holmes since I saw the series back in the 80's. Jeremy's portrayal is the quintessential Holmes. The only downside of our relationship is that, because of Holmes, I started smoking a pipe as soon as I could. I managed to avoid the Cocaine, thankfully!

I personally like the king’s mask because of its deliberate ridiculousness: in a story filled with disguises he is the only incompetent one, highlighting how well paired Holmes and Irene are intellectually , and how the king is indeed not on their level. The use of fire as a ruse calls to the Norwood Builder. And if I had to guess I would say they pushed Sign of Four later in the series so they wouldn’t have to write Watson as a married man: that way the episodes could play more as the adventures of two buddies with lots of time on their hands to hop a train at a moment’s notice, rather than having to write in a wife for Watson and then ignore her completely, which would make Watson seem like a terrible husband to a modern audience, rather than the sweetheart he is.
Thank you so much for doing this podcast; I cannot even describe my delight at finding fellow passionate and detail oriented Brett/Holmes fans!

All good points. Especially about the king's incompetence. Jeremy's reaction when he says "Is it not a pity she was not on my level?" Thank you finding us!

To clear up confusion. The kingdom of Bohemia was part of the holy Roman empire. The king was one of the heads of that empire, along with other kings. The title was largely symbolic at times. But there was a royal line. At the time of writing, Bohemia was part of the Austo-Hungarian empire, pre WWI. The king would have been little more than a figurehead around then. Bohemia was modern day Czech Republic or Czechia. I suspect the the pronunciation or Ms. Adler's name was due to her being a famous singer in Prague, the Bohemian capital, which is probably where they met. I believe they cover some of this in the story. I am assuming the writers extrapolated the pronunciation from these indications of her background.

I discovered your podcasts today and spent a glorious hour listening to the interviews with Jenny Seagrove and Betsy Brantly. So this evening I thought I'd go back to the beginning and start with your first episode. Loved the Star Wars fact - never knew that! Have never stopped loving JB's Holmes since a teenager in the 80s. Looking forward to listening to the rest of your podcasts. Cheers for keeping the flame.

I love this episode - as you say it sets up some basics for the whole series - you see all their vanities and motivations and the relationship that Holmes and Watson have - its all there. The disguises are amazing - and of course Sherlocks groom disguise does fool Irina - she never knows that he was the witness that allowed her marriage to proceed. I love the fact that in the first episode Sherlock starts off full of vanity and pride - and gets outwitted by a mere woman. its like he learns the lessons right there and Jeremy Brett is so able to show us his vulnerabilities and faults through his face. I hope that makes sense - oh - last thing I love the King, so full of ego, he is an hilarious character! and the way Sherlock laughs at his pomposity - he snubs him twice with a certain brilliant style! - the battle of the egos! Thank you ! I love your podcasts. Love and blessings. PS re the irregulars not being outside Irenas house - I think her house is in a very posh area of London and not the inner city - so the irregulars would be out of place. the couples and entertainment are more credible as being in a more suburban & upmarket area. hope that makes sense.

"A Scandal in Bohemia" is one of a handful of instances in this series of an actor making an appearance in 2 different episodes playing 2 different characters. Here, Will Tacey plays the Clergyman. Tacey later appears in "The Boscombe Valley Mystery" playing the Coroner.

Two of my favorite things about Jeremy Brett's Holmes:
He spoke about Holmes consuming your soul, that you forget yourself.
And later on with Edward Hardwick, he spoke that he played Holmes as married to Watson. 😁
He remains and this show remains my favorite adaptation of Sherlock Holmes

I remember trying to find adaptations of A Scandal In Bohemia after I read the original story, and found this episode here on UA-cam. I was blown away by how faithfully they brought the story and characters to life. Even if the way they pronounce Irene was driving me crazy. Later I was excited to find out that I had stumbled across the first episode, and watched several more sporadically over the next year or two.
I have seen many, many versions of Sherlock Holmes, but Brett's still remains my absolute favorite! I'm thrilled to have stumbled across a podcast chronicling this amazing adaptation.

I’ve only discovered your podcast recently and am binging them. I know this wasn’t a great mystery but it’s still one of the very best. For me the atmosphere makes the show more so than the mystery. Yes you’re right it’s a domestic squabble and set in modern times this would be a bore. What makes this work is the late Victorianisms. Holmes is the sexually repressed yet inventive super Victoria. A champion for his king while acting out a ritual of courtly love for the queen. Then there’s Holmes two finest disguises, the over the top theatrics of the foreign king, the impossibly glamorous yet virtuous adventuress. This was perfection.

Love your Podcast! Jeremy Brett is definitely my favorite actor who portrayed Sherlock! I'm actively listening to all your Podcasts now after working like a maniac on a crab boat for the past two years! hahahaha... In regards to the use of the word "late." For the time Conan Doyle wrote these stories, the use of the word "late" doesn't necessarily mean "dead." It may simply be a reference to these people having passed out of the life/activities of the characters (Holmes/Watson). I cannot think of any references in literature other than a phrase (especially in English literature) I've come across many times, by example: "Mr. Johnson, late of Johnson Steamship Company." Musing out loud over here, but I never took the word to mean dead as much as "past tense" for the purpose of the story. Looking forward to listening to all your PCs!

I just discovered the Granada series on You Tube. Never seen or heard of it. But I love listening to Greg Wagland's narrations of the stories. And just a couple weeks ago, You Tube recommended one of the Granada shows to me. I thought, "well it looks really old, and it will probably suck, but what the hell"... It was the nicest surprise I've had in a very long time. I would say it's now vying for top spot with Star Trek and Firefly as my favorite tv show! I just came across your pod cast today.

I love the series. Sherlock Holmes movies, TV shows are like pizza, all are good, just some better than others. I love some characteristics from Jeremy and David. I also love some differences from Basil and Nigel. Bob Hope said Basil threw the best parties lol. I understand Jeremy better after finding out about his struggles. I wish we could have saved him. Edward was also a great Watson, but now Jude Law has taken that mantel. Robert Downey Jr. is also a very good Sherlock. He is brilliant, probably the most talented actor ever to play Holmes. The best thing… the more Holmes the better!

@@sherlockpodcast Ofc and only teasing. It's sweet to hear Shire, like it's Lord of the Rings. I live in Derbyshire so very close to several of the stories. The cavern in The Priory School is really impressive and there are several more in the area. That one is at the edge of a town (Castleton) and there is a Norman castle right above it which dominates the area.
The countryside around is very beautiful. In the story it seems bleak, and there are places like that, but also lovely dales and hills.
BTW they don't get the Derbyshire accent correct. It's not bad, and close, but they have it as more Yorkshire, which would upset us!
Really enjoying the episodes and analysis.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this to you (and I'm still listening to the episode, so you might mention it yourself later), but you have to read Carole Nelson Douglas' Irene Adler series. They are 8 books and a short story and really capture the essence of THE WOMAN in my opinion. The first 4 were made into unabridged audiobooks on cassette. I have them and digitised them to listen to in my car. Books 5 & 6 are a duology (the only one that ends in a cliffhanger) Very good books indeed!

  • @stillhuntre55

I know this was years ago, but the actors in the series are saying Irene's name correctly. It's not Eye-reen. It's I-ray-ne. My great-gramdmother (who was British) spelt her name Anne-Sophia, but it wasn't pronounced Sow-fee-yah, but "Sah-fa-yah".

I never liked this story, although I like the adaptation. To show Holmes being outwitted undermines the character when he could have easily defeated her. It makes you wonder if he deliberately let her get away a la a Mission Impossible episode.
