I love this episode, especially the guy in the shipping office. It's pretty funny how he fawns over Holmes ('Watson, are you writing this down?" lol), and is an avid reader of Watson's accounts. His slightly embarrassing exchange with the housemaid/secretary is hilarious.

What a lovely treat to listen to on a Sunday afternoon, relaxing on my back deck in the summer heat. Thanks you two, I'm always thrilled to find a new Sherlock Holmes podcast to enjoy. Looking forward to your future episodes! Now off to rewatch the Abbey Grange...

    My favourite episodes are:
    1- Musgrave ritual
    2- Priory school
    3- Devil’s foot
    4- Six Napoleons
    5- Empty house
    6- Second stain
In my opinion all episodes in “Return of Sherlock Holmes” season are great!
and in long movies: The hound of Baskerville and The last vampire

Disagree with the ratings here, chaps. Abbey Grange is not only a perfect short story in terms of the canon and the craft of writing, but it's also a perfectly-realised episode. Perfect 10 for me. I think more could have been said about how this is one of the first bits of popular fiction that talked frankly about domestic abuse - and makes the judgement that those who kill an abuser in defence of their lives should go free. As usual, the moral compass of Holmes and Watson is well ahead of the law.

I never knew The Abby Grange was Edward Hardwick's first appearance. By the time they got to shooting The Empty House Hardwick was in full charge of his Watson. In The Empty House the tender feeling they have for each other is played with just the right amount of restraint, but not too much. That's my favorite scene in the whole series when the hunched bookseller turns into Watson's deceased friend Sherlock.

Oh, what a lovely missive from Ms Wyndham Davies. Everytime i watch this episode i would think if only The Masterblackmailer was done in the same season or during season 1. Mr Brett was so nimble as he scaled the wall

Gentlemen, thanks so much for another wonderful installment! I would say that The Dancing Men is the most tragic/romantic episode, because of the death of poor Hilton Cubitt. It's such a great episode but I still have a hard time watching it.

Ouch, now I cannot unsee the electric wires over the fireplace xD
A lovely listen as always (special mention to the anechdote with Hardwicke trying to look as much as possible like Burke and to Brett's contagious laugh)

Thank you again for another wonderful podcast. I look forward each time! I watched the episode again and looked for the scene in the train with Watson’s pencil. I think actually he only rubbed his finger against his mustache over his lip.

Thank you again, I always enjoy your podcasts (somehow missed this one but have now caught up) I think your thoughts on Watson’s response to Holmes’ criticism is a little off though. Watson knows Holmes’ standards and that he also can be somewhat belligerent at times, so almost laughs it off (internally) as it’s Holmes just being Holmes.

You're probably right. I think we were just hoping there'd be a bit more comedy in there.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I think another reason the good doctor Watson is immune somewhat to Holmes’ barbed comments is he’s heard them all before, and has gotten quite used to Holmes’ general attitude towards his writings. Also he knows he is writing in a style more conducive to entertainment and that he is not trying to write from a technical analysis and educational standpoint, so he understands the comment has some merit. Anyway thank you again for the reply, it’s only a trifle but….well you know how that goes. Keep up the great work, Sherlock Holmes is my favourite literary character and the brilliant Mr Brett is without question my favourite Sherlock Holmes.

"Abbey Grange" is my favorite story, except for whichever is the one I've last read or watched. I enjoy your podcasts, but I note that in this one you keep praising Stephen Fry's audiobook reading of this story in particular, due to his accurate rendering of the Australian accent for---if I understood you rightly---the speech of both the characters of Mary Fraser and Captain Cro(c)ker. I absolutely adore Stephen Fry, both for his great humour and his incredible erudition, and l love the rich, mellifluous sound of his voice. I will certainly seek out his readings of the Holmes stories, and anticipate many hours of pleasure from them. However, I wonder if in this case he might not have wanted an opportunity to display his command of the Australian accent, as I don't believe either Mary or Jack would have spoken with one. I think the text of the original story is pretty explicit as to the fact that Jack Cro(c)ker's nationality is undoubtedly English. He tells Holmes that the explanation of his running into Teresa in England, and thus meeting Mary again on multiple occasions, is because the Abbey Grange is close to where he was staying with "my people in Kent." If his "people"---i.e., his relations---are from Kent, this clearly indicates, barring other evidence, that he, like them, is English, and would therefore speak like an Englishman, certainly not like an Australian! As to Mary, at the time this story was written, and probably for some considerable time after, middle and upper-class Australians despised the native accent as vulgar and lower-class, and were careful to preserve received English pronunciation, and to make sure this was how their children learned to speak. I think it may accordingly be assumed that Mary Fraser also spoke with an English, not an Australian, accent. The Granada series therefore got it right by having both Jack and Mary speak with English accents, even though the actress playing Mary was herself Australian. She was probably aware of the class bias regarding manner of speech that had existed at one time

Agreed. Especially since she was from Adelaide. Was an extension of England at the time. That accent so many people identify as being _the_ Australian accent (as if there is only one) didn't sound as they do now in the 1800s. I noticed the same thing in the latest version of Picnic at hanging rock - the doctor sounds like he comes from West NSW - a professional person at that time, even up until the mid last century, would not, did not, sound like that.
