Great interview. I have probably heard every podcast with Mat and they’re all the same easy questions. You really dig deep and got him to show a side nobody else has. 👏
I'm really impressed with how willing Mat is to bring up the low moments in his life. Most of us just want to forget our failures, and we certainly don't want to talk about them on youtube.
This is easily one of the best interviews with Fraser. Love the back and forth and it felt real and not forced like other interviews are. Way to go Zack!
Speaking about having a significant other to help you and how big of a difference it can be, look at Cbum the last couple years. His fiance is a previous Mr Olympia winner so she completely understands what it takes to be a body builder. So watching his vlogs, she basically made his food the whole year. All he had to do was train. Can't tell me that level of support wasn't a huge benefit. So having someone to basically run the gauntlet with you - whatever it is - it's a benefit.
I related so much to his description of ‘isms’. The application of addictive tendencies into something productive/positive is freedom for the mind - these dispositions don’t have to imprison us!
Love this so much! I have so many comments but the number one thing I'm loving and admiring so much are these two guys really talking and discussing about life, mental and the willingness to help others.
I’m so happy this generation of athletes, especially the ‘greats’, are speaking on their emotions/doubts/ fears in the process. Until recently I thought to be great you had to have an iron mind, bullet proof skin, no fear etc. I saw in myself that I was fearful and had lots of doubts. And so I figured I could never achieve my greatness bc I was born with a weak mind. Now hearing from GOAT level athletes like mat and cbum, I see that fear and doubt is no excuse. That you can reach the best version of yourself and succeed even with a lot fear and doubt during the process.
I have SOOOOOO much to say about this interview. In short, its awesome, deep, real, and extremely relatable. Never knew Zack was in vermont at the same time I work at UVM. So so good to know more about you both. Thanks a lot for doing this.
As an endurance athlete coming into CrossFit in my early 20’s I can tell you (at least, anecdotally) that it’s not a great athlete background for what is fundamentally a strength limited sport. A decade+ of competitive mid-distance swimming supplemented with recreational distance running - or similar training (especially during puberty) - teaches the body metabolic and mechanical economy. The former is arguably in stark contrast to the neurological response and motor unit recruitment needed to become adept at power movements (i.e., weightlifting, sprinting, etc). That’s to say nothing of the bone density, connective tissue strength, and shear size that benefit moving heavy weights. While it’s arguably true that a big power-trained athlete has analogous disadvantageous when moving to an endurance sport, it seems like if they have a good intrinsic vo2 max and proportion of type II.a fibers (just a guess.. not doing biopsies on my buddies) they can get up to speed on endurance capacity in 6 months to a year. That’s a big difference than the years it takes to build strength. And let’s face it, high level CrossFit screens for strength. Anyone that can snatch 140 kilos at a reasonable body weight can huff a mile and do some burpees when it’s game time. But you ask an endurance specialist to do the first rep in a snatch ladder that starts at 85 kilos, theres a good chance they’re tying for last. Again, just my own thoughts based on observation/experience but 10 years in and this logic still seems to check out b
This is exactly why the 1st step for anyone that is starting crossfit and likes it and wants to get better is to stop doing it and run a NLP and then intermediate and once that's maxed out do crossfit.
Agree. The minimum strength level required to be a competitive crossfitter disqualifies many from the start. Conversely, to your point, I've read research that shows recreational but dedicated weightlifters/bodybuilders have very similar key fitness markers like vo2 max to those of regular but recreational crossfitters. Logic then suggests that the "fitness" part will be attainable when a strong athlete moves into crossfit.
I like how crossfit is kind of like mma. Different training backgrounds can help an athlete in different ways within the sport and weightlifters going into crossfit are akin to wrestlers going into mma. Just a solid (possibly the best) base to have for the sport.
@Your Favorite Bucket you have to be in crossfit as well with the clean and snatch. I know we like to make fun and the pullups and shit are funny as hell but having tequnique and mobility and strenght from being a weightlifter def helps which otherwise takes many months to reach
Walking on your hands across a field takes a ton of proficiency, as does any running, swimming, or Olympic lifting event. Obviously MMA is more technical but Crossfit requires an insane amount of skills both technical and otherwise
@Your Favorite Bucket "CrossFit is just brute forcing through as many things as quickly as possible. Injury risk be damned". That's exactly what Strongman is too. But I doubt you'd condemn WSM. It's a sport bro. There's going to be inherent risk of injury.
@Your Favorite Bucket that's actually not true. Injury rates are higher in strongman competitions than CrossFit. NFL injuries are higher than CrossFit games injuries as well.
Great discussions. At 42:16 I loved that explanation around kettlebells, and the mindset of once he was excited to see it in a workout, he could move on to proficiency elsewhere. I’m going to apply that mindset to my training 👊🏻👍🏻
Absolutely awesome content! Love the format and personal level that you kept the conversation. Don't get me wrong, I love the informative "talking head" style but this one was on another level. Outstanding!!
I hope people caught what he said about his early training and only dedlifting 400. Your lifts and WODs will get a lot better if you get your squat, deadlift and bodyweight up. Set an actual goal and see if you can take your total up to 1200 and see what that does for your body and WODs. Are you training or are you exercising? Are you training or are you practicing? There is a big difference.
Rich F is a legend himself. But. No one ☝🏽 will ever come close to pealing back the layers of earning deserving. The champion jersey Mathew Fraser is an will always be remembered as the greatest, if he signs up for a competition your in f$&@ing trouble . HWPO🙌👊🏻
This is no offense to Matt, but shots like this show you how huge Zack Actually is. Making us 5f 10 average blokes look like kids😂. Loved the interview bro. Thanks for asking the important questions!
When he said that he didn't have the knowledge to succeed in olympic lifting until after he had squandered the opportunity gave me permission to forgive myself with a similar life mistake
Haven’t watched the whole thing yet but I hope he finally does. The xfit community is second to none for fake nattys,as if taking peds makes his resume any less impressive.
People forget that he is only 5 foot 6. That kind of muscle density is achievable on such a small frame, although only for genetic outliers. If you compare him to the most impressive Bronze Era Bodybuilders, who mostly were also small, he suddenly doesnt seem THAT out of this world. If he was above 6 foot tall, it would be an entirely different conversation. What i read online is that he weighed 88KG at 16% bodyfat. Although he definitively looked leaner to me, that would mean an FFMI of around 27. Very suspicious but still within the possible genetic outlier realm. But yes he most likely juiced.
For a competitive lifter, yes. In that class he would probably be the tallest lifter, and just from the torque angles would have to be 5% stronger just to output the same force as the guy thats 5'4". People don't realize how heavy (muscle dense, not fat) you need to be. If you are average sized 5'8 to 5'10" you will lift your best around 100 to 110kg. People think you'll be fat at that weight, but not if you're actually training. Yes you will be fat if your that big with a 405 squat, but the point is if you are that big you should be squatting over 600.
Let me correct you there. The fittest Crossfiter. He'd probably get smoked on specific fitness by any elite athlete. You know, the real athletes that get paid for sports and go to the Olympics.
It's so ridiculous calling this guy the fittest. He is definitely not fitter than a lot of cross-country skiers, cyclists, rowers, or long-distance runners. He is incredibly fit, though. Now, if you are saying the fittest at doing fitness stuff, then ok.
Good grief this guy is a horrible interviewer. He habitually interrupted Fraser and continuously asked questions and wouldn’t let Mat answer. He would answer his own questions. Stopped watching after 20 minutes. I cooks tell Mat has to bite his lip several times.
The first podcast where it felt like Fraser actually talked to a friend and not a stranger who just wanna hear what sells! Good job!
Man, I really like this guy. Humanizing vulnerability and anxiety as THE world class athlete. Great interview

What is the definition of fittest man? Is it marketing bs from crossfit? Can he beat any ultra distance runner or ultra triathletes?
