My church just did a series called The Red Balloon and this was the song that they used and it's been stuck in my head forever. I love this song so much now
A previous commenter said this genre is Celtic...it's not. It's folk-country...they've won award for best country and best folk categories. Celtic is folky in its way though just not this style of folk music. :) Their music is excellent...I'd been trying to find a Taylor Swift song and stumbled onto her Safe & Sound by video featuring the Civil Wars by accident so afterwards I checked out a few of their songs and now I can't get enough! lol
Beautifully haunting song. It goes along somewhat scarily well with the part I'm on in the book I'm reading. Also, reminds me not of a carnival but of a circus only open at night.Yes,another book reference.
The second time she says balloon sounds so haunting, but that's why I love it! And If any of you are not sure what genre this is, it's Celtic. Most Celtic songs are a bit haunting. (Only the newer ones, not the Celtic songs from the 70's/80's, sometimes even 90's) And I also know that they do some country songs as well. Their country songs are the only ones I'll listen to. (along side with Scotty Mcreery)
I think the song is about one of those silent French movies where it's all black and white except the red balloon. She is chasing it but you can't tell if she let it go or if the "four winds blew it away." she doesn't even realize that she's chasing after her lost love, so she doesn't know she is the proverbial "girl with the red balloon".
They actually do say Calico, if you go onto their website the lyrics are up, and they don't switch up the lyrics between gigs...it wouldnt really make sense, since they reiterate it later in the song that the chick is lonely.... On another note this is such a beautiful song it gives me chills no matter how many times i listen to it!!!
Type in The Civil Wars "20 Years" (Lawerence High School Classroom Sessions Pt.3) Skip to 4:22 and John Paul provides a little info. about it. I'm sure not as much as you'd like but I think that's kind of what they were aiming for.. To create a little bit of a mystery and cause conversation. It's kind of like abstract art. They provide the artwork but we draw our own conclusion of what we think it means. We fill in the spaces that are a bit ambiguous.
When I heard this on the radio, I thought it said "with the red bud", like a flower. pffft... It's "with the red balloon". The name of the song makes SO much more sence now.
It's about a Journalist who was looking for Banksy (who painted the piece the title references) and finds a girl who claims to be the subject of the piece in a bar. They are talking about the girl and if she is the subject of the piece and what would make her say she is. It's questioning her motives and intentions.
estie kalter I actually like this as a duet (Maddie Chloe), one girl finds a red balloon, tells her best friend, then her best friend ends up taking it. The girl who found it first spends the dance trying to get what was hers, but the girl who took it won't let her. She finally ends up killing the girl who took it, and walking away with the balloon. The girl could've been pushed around by her friend for their entire friendship, this could've been the last straw. Now this is her token of 'I finally won'.
@cinnalilyseverus No, I listened to it after you said that. they might say that it another track, but they clearly say 'the one in the calico'. That makes a little more sense, in keeping with the song tho. a little more romantic...they should change it.
I really love this song. But can someone tell me what it means? I'm usually really good at telling what songs mean but..this one is just confusing me D:
Yes, this definitely the Vest song in the world! Check your spelling before you post comments. And don't hate me for being a bit of a Grammar Nazi, it's just the way I am.
This is why I love The Civil Wars. Their songs are original, and haunting yet beautiful. Why can't there be more artists like these guys?
this song is timeless i could listen to it forever
Are you listening this even after so many years??
My church just did a series called The Red Balloon and this was the song that they used and it's been stuck in my head forever. I love this song so much now

I heard this song playing where I work. And it just blew me away...its a creepy song. But I love it
I am very satisfied with the no dislikes. this song must be even more amazing than I thought!!!!!! :D
This reminds me of a Cirque De Solei show I went to.
She carries the Red Balloon for Love and Blood
Oh my gosh, that was exactly what i thought!
Definitely not what I expected. I also love how UA-cam has autocorrect
this song sounds like a carnival after everyone has gone home.

Reminds me of Sister of Mine from the Family of Blood episode.
I don't think that this song HAS music video... but that WOULD be cool!
why can't I find a music video for this?
Makes me think of Doctor Who.
Reminds me of the Doctor Who episode Family of Blood with the little girl the Doctor traps in a mirror.
This would be such a pretty dance
wouldn't this song be a great solo for maddie from dance moms? i think it would
estie kalter Yes!! omg she would do so well dancing to this song it would be soo Beautiful!!

Cassidy Chandon woah that would be a nice plot I wish they would really do a dance to this song (:
3 girls from my studio did this as a trio.
Does htis song remind anyone of Rose from Doctor Who?
Great song. Good job Joy and John! :)

Its about kidnapping. The one who is always and never alone.
I really love this song. But can someone tell me what it means? I'm usually really good at telling what songs mean but..this one is just confusing me D:

Does anyone think that there is a relationship between the title of this song, and Banksy's girl with the red balloon?
oh god
These comments are so "hauntingly" annoying. On another note, great song!
Kind of makes me think of Edgar Allen Poe.
The second "so lovely" that you have is wrong. It's not lovely, it's lonely.
This song is a tribute to the graffiti artist Banksy.
Yes, this definitely the Vest song in the world! Check your spelling before you post comments. And don't hate me for being a bit of a Grammar Nazi, it's just the way I am.
Amy Pond's song...also, Rose Tyler's song...
