Hi Ben there is a chain makers shop in the Black Country Museum, Dudley England One of the chaps who demonstrates there worked making chain for a living - he would add single links onto a length of chain - his work rate is amazing he can form and weld a perfect link in about a minute - but i suppose if you are making a living at it then you have to turn them out quickly - Stay safe

Blacksmithing is something I've always had an interest in since i was a child. Now that im 21 i finally wanna give it a shot!
About the same age as you. Started 2 years ago and its growing fruitful. Great as a side when studying carpentry or similar.

Fantastic presentation!! I was a Westinghouse apprentice in the early '70s. We were trained in Swiss-style tool making, where almost all of the pieces we made had to be hand-finished. My Grandfather was an industrial blacksmith in the 1920s I built a small foundry and forge to play with, in my retirement. Unfortunately, I can only get anthracite coal where I live so to keep it hot I have to inject a small amount of propane to keep it lit. I'm waiting for the weather to warm up so I can use the tools I built. And as far as C.N.C. goes, check out some vids of the latest machining centers and be prepared to be amazed. I watched a guy on a 6 axis machine make a part that looked a lot like a pump impeller that I made 40 years ago. The time it took me to make one part was 19 hours. The time it took the guy on the machining center--3 min.
...And you want to start your fire like this so the shop doesn't fill with smoke (wait, that's not it...) LOL Great video well worth the time to watch!

ALSO: ...(Those old "clinkers" could be broken up, and saved, to use in the Winter time, for better traction on icy driveways, roads, etc. Don't waste any of it).

Need to get some understanding and teamwork between you and the camera person. We’re missing important details. That said, I love it.
I made a forge and I'm sure that it wasn't ideal but my goal was to forge weld two pieces of steel together. I was using charcoal and borax as flux and I never could get the two pieces to weld. After countless tries I bought some anthracite coal and I tried again. When I pulled the two pieces from the fire they were both shooting sparks and when I saw that I knew that they would weld. And they did. My problem all those previous attempts was that I just didn't have the metal hot enough. I've tried again with charcoal and once again I can't reach the temperature necessary. Is it possible to forge weld using ordinary charcoal. Or must you use coal? I was able to get steel so hot with coal that it would burn it up if I wasn't careful. Way hotter then I could ever get with charcoal. And reaching those temperatures and burning up the steel I can only assume that my fire was oxidizing. If my fire was neutral or carburizing I would assume that the steel would have melted and not just burned up. But I would think that with so much coal you couldn't make an oxidizing fire. How could you possibly get carbon rich if a pile of coal won't get you there? I guess you just use less air and heat longer to reach higher temperatures. Or I guess that maybe it's always oxidizing when you're reaching welding temperature and that's why flux is required. Maybe oxyacetylene is the only flame that can reach welding temperatures and still be a neutral or reducing. I think I just answered my own question.

You referred to the use of flux, is this a commercial product or something you have made up yourself? Also your dog is a British border collie, the same as my own beauty.
Common flux for blacksmithing is Borax.

European anvils usually dont have a step etc..? The ones he's talking about are South German anvils or farriers anvils. You know where London is right? 😉 I'm a European and I own four anvils, three of them are London pattern.
Appart from that it's an excellent video. Great naration, easy to understand and to the point. I always know if I'm gonna like a man from the way he treats his animals 😊

I have 100% CNC milled/lathed fake twists into material. It's about 3 times longer and 100 times more wasteful than just chucking some stock in my forge but you can get the same shape using CNC.
