  • Tons of plastic mostly from the US and Canada end up at a dump in Muzaffarnagar, a city north of New Delhi. But India banned almost all imports of plastic waste in 2019. Bloomberg's K. Oanh Ha investigates the failings of the global recycling system.
Plastic wrappers and parcels that start off in Americans’ recycling bins end up at illegal dumpsites and industrial furnaces - and inside the lungs of people in Muzaffarnagar.
Muzaffarnagar, a city about 80 miles north of New Delhi, is famous in India for two things: colonial-era freedom fighters who helped drive out the British and the production of jaggery, a cane sugar product boiled into goo at some 1,500 small sugar mills in the area. Less likely to feature in tourism guides is Muzaffarnagar’s new status as the final destination for tons of supposedly recycled American plastic.
On a November afternoon, mosquitoes swarmed above plastic trash piled 6 feet high off one of the city’s main roads. A few children picked through the mounds, looking for discarded toys while unmasked waste pickers sifted for metal cans or intact plastic bottles that could be sold. Although much of it was sodden or shredded, labels hinted at how far these items had traveled: Kirkland-brand almonds from Costco, Nestlé's Purina-brand dog food containers, the wrapping for Trader Joe’s mangoes.

Why is the USA still using plastic packaging? Legislate for paper and cardboard and this problem gets solved.

The US Govt cares a lot about it's people, hence happily allows shipping plastic waste out of the country.

How about STOP importing other people's trash and hold your own government accountable for allowing this to happen.

i watched a same story about thailand or indonesia maybe. They import recyclable plastics from us and canada because its cheaper, but they also get tonnes of non recyclable plastics. Due to which they are thinking to stop importing from us and canada.
    .
Same trend here, these industries buy paper to recycle , but along with that they also get loads of plastics with them.

But nearby states Haryana and Punjab burn so much of the harvest waste that it pollutes almost half of India's geography, do a video on that as well.
Despite our governments providing them a biodegradable option, the ride farmers would not opt for that but burn all of the remainder of the harvest, straw, grass, etc.
We can't be bigots and say that US is responsible for all the pollution when our own people still use plastic despite a strict ban on its usage all over India.
People still use it EVERYWHERE !!! Irrespective of its micron sizes.

With that many flies buzzing around India has other problems too. They chose to import waste from other countries, they choose to pollute the air they breath which in turn gets circulated all over the rest of the world, they made these choices. So to try to pin the blame on the source you really should be focused on the people causing their own harm: India.
