You hit the nail on the head with " They don't teach critical thinking in schools"! Exactly; because critical thinking would debunk and expose what they need one to believe, in order to maintain control.

This is human nature. We find reasons to hate each other.. it might be skin colour or religious beliefs who we vote for. what country we're from or witch sports team we follow.. We like to think we're Civilised but we've got a long way to go.

Actually we don't. Most of us never think of race, but somehow we let a few assholes get us all worked up about it. Most of us, if we think back to where our racist attitude towards a particular race comes from, it would be from being told by some a-hole, either from some dumb anecdotal story, a stupid news story, a stupid documentary, a movie, etc..., and/or a combination of these things that works itself into a feedback loop reinforcing the bias. For me, the wake up were the Jews. Being an asian immigrant, I didn't know anything about Jews. However, I developed a racist attitude against Jews due to the casual racism against Jews through jokes (which I didn't understand) and the silly conspiracy theories about Jews, for example protocols of the elders of zion. I woke up one day, and realised I don't know one jew, yet I was angry with them, which was so stupid. These days, I look at the people I interact with in my world and I realise friends come from any race and so do a-holes.

Out of all the reactions I've seen/ listened to in regards to this video, yours was the wisest by far. Indeed, to get a real perspective you need the same situation viewed from as many perspectives as possible if you want to get an idea on what really was going on. And it's always a multitude of things. Great content!

Yes I believe people nowadays seem exceptionally bitter about the horrors their ancestors went through, and want to almost extract revenge from the perceived enemy of their ancestors. It blinds them from seeing or in most parts even believing that others had these horrors inflicted on them too...,..speaking honestly here, We were taught about this at school, and knew of the plight of others ....I felt such an enormous amount of pride and bewilderment that our ancestors that survived, kept on keeping on ,hung in and managed to eventually change their circumstances around....I as a result would have had empathy for marginalized and respected that others had suffered, and how wrong it was,....
In recent years the world seems to be changing for the worst ..I do not understand where all this in my eyes new found hatred ,and bringing up the past in a tit for tat, or the pay us for what may have happened..etc are what started it off, or the fact that things or being called out for being racist that are not.......what hurting me is when some say ..that what happened my ancestors did not happen, denying, diminishing all that they went through, not knowing or evening caring about others suffering in such a blatant way, I am honestly at the cusp of feeling like not wanting to listen to it in case start disliking others for no other reason except how behaving .....

Sowell is one of the greatest intellects of our age. His knowledge of history and society covers such a wide range -- of course, he has spent many decades studying, and writing several books. From his name did I visit your video and, now, thank you, too, Sir, for thoughtful commentary that helps bring home a valuable message.

I realized after learning that my maternal Grandparents were born into WW2 in Germany, that that obviously left a good amount of "Generational Traumata" in my maternal familiy, so THEY actually (in my mind now) where "VICTIMS of their TIMES" because they were the Generation who had to learn "To live in peace" and while I'd NEVER want to Excuse the Nazi regime and ottrocities (or however you write this, help?)...I have a hard time to blame a 0-8, maybe even a 16-18 year old who legitmatley didn't know antoher time than Slavery, dictatorship, war (it's not like there aren't still countries who have been longer in wars than not)...I do blame the history for the sh*t and bloodshed it did to people I don't even know I might be related to like those ancient tribes of Germany or their "oppressors" who became italians /romans but I'm always in awe that it seems that humanitiy just somehow continues. Like the fact we are all on Earth right now means at least 1-2-3---30 Generations on your own branch had to live through at least 10-100 chaptrs of going on in the places they were born and raised or even mis - and - replaced.
And that's also why I love watching "Where have your Genes been, ancestry DNA results." Obviously am aware that after 25% or less it's more guessed but it will never stop to amusingly imperss me when you have the Native American DNA pop up on the most cliché looking Scandinavian Child, meanwhile an Asian person gets some Scandinavian DNA it's literlly like history is saying " Booyah, surprise! Weren't expecting this, and here we meet again ,my child." *cheekytonuge*

You have the Mwene Nzinga Mbande, also know as the queen of Angola, she fought the Portuguese in the 16th century and she owned slaves but later it was against slavery and the slave trade.
You also have the case of the King of the Congo, he was not exactly against the slave trade but he want limit it and put rules since it was losing a lot of population and some of their rivals were getting too powerful.
But is not just african elites against slavery or the treatment given by Europeans to indigenous peoples, the Father António Vieira even managed to pass some laws to defend them.
Just to add a note that António Vieira is not against slavery, he just defend that they deserved to be treated humanely and in accordance with Christian values.

There are more than 40 million slaves in the world today across 169 countries.. most people believe slavery is bad, yet it's happening..the luxury goods are too good for us to boycott them..electric car batteries are being mined in cobalt mines by children who are enslaved..yet governments are pushing people to buy more electric cars.. it's a sad, sad situation..

While no one wanted to be a slave there is no evidence of organized objections to other people being slaves. The opposition to slavery in the west was a peculiarity of certain protestant denominations and was never a majority in the American North. In Britian the opposition to slavery, despite not actually existing in Britian itself just the colonies, grew so strong that it forced the British government to end the slave trade, then about 1834 end slavery in the colonies, and finally force the British government to end the international slave trade everywhere. Long before the scramble for Africa, Britian would invade and take over certain centers of the slave trade such as Lagos.

Here is something else not mentioned in school. In the American South there were both native Americans, allowed by treaty with the US, and free Blacks who also owned slaves In Black history month you will not hear about William Ellison, one of the richest slave owners in South Caroline, was born a slave named April. Some slave owners were worse than others Ellison was not one of the nicer ones.

Slaves have existed since the beginning of mankind and this is known to all. But each era and each country treated slaves differently and there were different meanings to the word and the concept of slave.
The slaves obviously came from wars and piracy but also from the communal situation of each.
Example in ancient Greece at some point in history Athens had 21,000 citizens and 400,000 slaves but not in the sense that a slave has from 1450 onwards. Consider him a slave who has no business of his own and works for someone else. He lost his rights as a citizen and was considered a slave. Of course there were also the slaves from wars and piracy
but not everyone became a slave because you had to have the skills to become a slave and you had an extradition and of course you were paid.
Most of the slaves in Athens were Greek and most were white, few were black and they were from trade from the countries of the Nile, Egypt, etc., etc. or from wars for example with Xerxes who had many slaves from Africa.
And of course the Nile countries also had white slaves.
What is the difference with the slaves who went to America? there was no such racism, there was no such thing as what we now call white supremacy, there was no issue with ethnicity or skin color, and of course there was no such hatred.

The biggest problem is you are still slaves, you can work 12 hours a day 7 days a week and still end up homeless. Even the slaves back In the day were protected by a form of house. The thing is you talk about racism not modern slavery. You talk about pay gap not living wage, and a lot of others.
