  • Nizhny Novgorod is a city in the European part of Russia, located at the confluence of two great rivers, the Volga and the Oka. Nizhny Novgorod has long been a trade center connecting the north and south of Russia, and to some extent it is a birthplace of the Russian capitalism. This city has its own Kremlin, metro system and even a rope way above the Volga River! This year Nizhny Novgorod celebrates tis 800 anniversary, and I visited it just after the celebration. It was interesting to learn about the city sights and how they are connected with Russia's history.

I spent so much time editing this video, so that I got used to the city and it began to look usual for me. And I didn’t expect to see so many comments about how beautiful the city is! It made me to look at NN with a new look, it’s indeed very beautiful and I’m glad I visited it. Even miss it now despite my negative conclusions at the end :D Thank you for your warm comments! P.s. Those who say that at 2:08 is not a VIP place, you are just jealous!

Some very attractive parts of the city like the Chkalov staircase, mini Kremlin and Bolshaia Pokrovskaia Street. And of course you showed us a glimpse of the more drab areas too to give the full picture as always. I can tell many places like the cable car crossing over the river would look even more impressive with blue skies.

Hi from poland. The city looks very nice. I’ve visited many countries in Europe and I’ve done quiet a bit of china. One day I’m planning to visit Russia too, probably st Petersburg and Moscow. You can actually take a train from Warsaw to Moscow. I’m dying to see if they will understand polish speakers.

@@nole8923 Absolutely true. Natasha is just so much fun to watch. Who would admit they got on the wrong bus three times in a day...or failed their drivers exam multiple times ! "Whimsical" is one word to describe her choice of subject material. On the other hand she finds some very interesting subjects like historical places to visit. She's just a delight to watch and imo she is really beautiful...the face of an angel. 😍💖🌹And I hope NObody ever says she is too slender and needs to "eat a cheeseburger"

As an anglichanin tourist with only some small experience of Russian cities outside of Moscow and Peter I would say that this was my favourite city that I visited. Again, I have only visited Western Russia, Europe side of the Urals, but Nizhny Novgorod was a beautiful gem of a city that I was not aware of until I went for the Football World Cup in 2018. With such historic streets, the amazing Kremlin, and beautiful sunset at the junction of the two rivers - it sort of reminded me of Kalamagden Fortress in Belgrade Serbia but not quite as old - as the sun was going down there were some spectacular views. Easy to get around with the metro, lots to see and do, eat and drink and party for young people. Excellent video about an excellent city. I hope more simple tourists such as me get to visit.

I spent a week in Nizhny Novgorod back in 1994, not too long after the fall of the Soviet Union and I stayed in a hotel on Verkhnevolzhskaya embankment, visiting a trade fair on the opposite bank of the Oka River. The view over the Volga and then a forest that stretched to the horizon was the first time I truly grasped what an immense country Russia is. I remember a small church was in the process of being reconsecrated in the old town and a large group of people had gathered to watch the ceremony. I have very fond memories of a beautiful city and the friendly and helpful Russian people.

Thanks for the video. 4:57 The Oka river divides NiNo into two parts, not the Volga. Volga just flows by, Oka is flowing into it. Only the upper part used to be Nizhny Novgorod until 1927 when both parts joined. It has almost all universities, research centers and theatres. The lower part territory closer to the confluence of Oka and Volga used to be the Nizhny Novgorod Trade Fair area. Two thirds of local populace lives in the lower part as it is the industrial part with lots of factories, automobile plant, large Sormovo shipyard, MiG factory, chemical processing etc. In brief, the local economy is a big exception to the usual Russian regional economies: it consists only of manufacturing and processing industries, almost no raw material deposits and subsequent production.

The covered road signs are necessary because the introduction of legal orders to restrict cars from entering the pedestrian sidewalk will come into effect on a certain date. The new traffic restriction cannot be displayed until the legal orders are active. The traffic bollards (pawns with no chessboard) are part of the same restriction - some physical restraint to back up the legal orders. I agree that major Russian cities with a population of over a million are way too similar. And it doesn't make sense to move from one to another. That's why people go to directly to Moscow or St Pete if they're looking to further their careers and get ahead in life.

It strongly depends which type of career are you talking. So Moscow is definitely a vacuum cleaner which is sucking people chasing for easy money. But for people involved in natural science, R & D, or manufacturing there are a lot of opportunities in Nizhny. Surprisingly here is a biggest ratio of people involved IT to total population. P.S. Your conclusion regarding similarity of "over million" Russian cities is totally misleading, I was forced to visit Rostov-on-Don this summer, it is not even close to Nizhny, Kazan or even Krasnodar. All "over million" Russian cities are different starting from driving culture to so called "opportunities" .

I like the visual effect of the reflection in the train window. Looks like it is getting colder. Nizhny Novgorod might have to be in the list of places to see. When you live in a big city you forget there are smaller cities. In big cities the economy is bigger and there is more money floating around. I noticed that when I was travelling in Southern France, Spain and Portugal many years ago too. I think the slower economy adds to their charm, the city has to renovate old buildings and keep as much as it can, it encapsulates a feeling of the past but in a flavour that reflects it's own history.

Have missed your video's, and was glad to see your out visiting with friends in other places. The city is most lovely, and being on the Volga River only adds to the charm. The old Architecture is stunning, and the Theatre looked amazing as well. Was enthralled with the mural on the wall of the train station, thinking it may have been a mosaic which very rare here. Thank you Natasha. Please take care.

Wow seriously love your videos from America. Here we are taught you guys live in tyranny and everyone is unhappy living in poverty etc but from what you show that’s not the case. Everyone seems super healthy no one is overweight in any of the videos. The city is clean and beautiful while big cities here are dirty and disgusting. I’m seriously in shock how clean the subways . Serious shock how peaceful great and beautiful everything looked I’m speechless.

Hi Natasha. You speak so eloquently of many things in Russia... the large important things and the small and less important things. Your honesty is refreshing and it makes your vlog worth watching at any time. You remain positive no matter what is happening around you. Stay happy and healthy Natasha and please continue to make more video vlogs. It is like having a personal guide to accompany one around Russia. It is both interesting and very informative. Have a great holiday season as everyone approaches the year end and hopefully, the year 2022 will be a much better year for all.

Wow i'm impressed at the width of the Volga river. I was filming yesterday at the St.:awrence river which to me seem slarge but the Volga must be 3 or 4 times bigger. 💙 Here it takes 10 minutes to cross on a ferry and costs 3.75$ (220 rubles) but i have a monthly pass for the ferry which is 38$ (2215 rubles)

Thank you for this video. I recently read a book about the history of Russia from 1100's to the Russian Revolution. This book was phenomenal and and this City was prominent in the creation of Russia. From the time when it was part of Rus.
Thanks for the review... did you know that in the 1200's Nihzny had roads throughout the city made with timber (wood) as opposed to dirt roads like most other places. This made it a very unique place among cities.

I actually liked Nizhny Novgorod when I visited it about 9 years ago! It looks much better now after the World Cup renovations. I'm sorry you didn't like it, but you should take the Sapsan train from Nizhny to Piter and experience St. Petersburg if you've never been there before. It is my second favorite city in Russia. Who can object to palaces, museums, and canals? My favorite city, Sochi, is just amazing and very modern. I think you will like it! My first time there was for the Olympics at the invitation of my luge coach from the US national team who I hadn't seen in 25 years. He and I were the only russophones in a group of 25 from the US Luge Association, our national federation. One final thought! I think the long gondola across the Volga is comparable in length to the new one that takes one from the Roza Khutor Lastochka train station, up Krasnaya Polyana, to the Laura Biathlon Centre, venue for biathlon at the Olympics. If you get the chance to travel to Sochi, I highly recommend it))).
