- in a recent video i spoke of adding a toggle to a line to for a locking toggle. in this video i have added a toggle to a quick deploy ridgeline. this addition has made a ridgeline that does not need any knots when you put it up it locks in place and holds the tarp in a firm hold..i used a emergency space blanket or i should say a re-useable emergency space blanket to show how easy it is to hook up the tarp to the pre set up ridgeline. the quick deploy ridgeline is made up using 550 paracord / #36 tarred bank line / and a stick i harvested from the local woods and bored a hole in it with a swiss army knife victorinox fieldmaster.

HI GUYS ! HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS VIDEO PLEASE LEAVE ANY THOUGHTS OR COMMENTS BELOW...THANKS FOR WATCHING SAFE JOURNEYS !
Thank you Mr Blackie, this is a total game changer!
I’m from Hamilton, AL. What part of the state are you in? I’d love to invite you up to our restaurant and maybe do a over night over in the Sipsey wilderness area in Bankhead if you’d be interested and live close enough to the area.
I also have a suggestion. Why not still go with a truckers hitch loop with the toggle instead of the bank line Prusik knot? Same concept but I think you’d be able to get your ridge line much tighter.
Great project do with the kids on the weekend👍
Am looking forward to trying your new improvisation Blackie. Would be awesome if I can make it work as well as you can! Great Creative thinking! Thank you!!
The simpler you make these things, the smarter you look.
Carry-On Blackie, Well Done!
thank you .. i am a big fan of quick simple ideas
Knot tying is generally the worst part of camping in bad weather. This is brilliant! DIY fast deploy kit.
yep i agree..where i live storms and be sudden and very strong..after the trees have been rocking in high winds its a bear to untie knots
I hereby dub thee "The Thinking Bushmaster" (reserved for those above merely "bushcrafter"...). As always, well thought out and presented. Excellent! And thankee!
I like it!
Excelente video. Perfectamente grafico y didactico.! Gracias Blackie!
GLAD TO HELP
You can put a toggle on the bowline end and marlin spike it to the tree without having to run all the line through the bowline. That would make it even faster up/down
If another toggle is added next to the bowline knot then even a loose marlin spike is not needed, although you could attach 1 with some bank line if that's your way . I agree that quick connect on both ends is best.
I was thinking the same. Another toggle at the bowline end. Attach it by putting the toggle through the bowline loop.
I stopped using paracord because when it gets wet it holds water and the clay wants to stick to it. I bought UHMWPE line to use instead. It does not absorb water and it is easy to wipe off the clay.

I use 2.2mm zing-it for the prusik knots.
I also made soft shackles with it. I bought some beads from Amazon so I don't have to fumble with connecting it. I just put the knot into the loop and close the loop up with the bead. The hole in the beads were just the right size. I use dental floss to feed it through the bead.

The cord is lighter than paracord.
@@josephtucker9612 small variation is use a loose zip tie vs bead. Results are the same.
@@josephtucker9612 Have never used Paracord .. except when hanging below a fully deployed Canopy 😊.
High strength synthetic cordage in different diameters has served me well for over 50 years. For the fine stuff now, unflavoured Dental Floss (it's also cheaper) works well. I don't have to ruin a length of over-priced Paracord just for one of the strands inside. To be deemed a 'gesoute Bushcrafter', it appears that using only 550 Paracord and N° 36 Tarred Bankline is the ONLY way to go. 'Mason Line' as used in the South African Underground Mining Industry since the dawn of time makes for an acceptable substitute for the tarred line when it's unavailable.
@Anonymous Won ..... but he's knot-adverse! No knots, no way, no how!
4:15 How you're pulling, I will keep using the traditional trucker hitch 🤣
Thank you for the video.
Well the ultimate no knot ridgeline is done Complete the only upgraded finding somebody else to put it up for You All the best thanks blackie
lol
Blackie, that was ingenious. Thank you for your innovation on an already time-saving technique. You demonstrated once again that our imaginations are our most valuable asset in the bush!
Exserlent good job very interesting thankyou
I just made one of these. I'm calling it the blackbird ridge line...or blackbird lutz ridge line. Lol which ever thanks this will save time and allow more dirt time.
I love all these tips and tricks, thank you.
Glad you like them!
Nice video. I like your use of the locking soft shackles to hold the tarp grommets to the prussik loop.
Super cool and Very usefull👌
Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
That's awesome Blackie, thank you! I also was going to set up my paracord ridgeline using bank line for the prussic knots.👍
enjoy it..safe journeys to you
Thank you Blackie.
Excellent video!!! Another in a series.
I will be making this! Learning from you is extremely easy. Thanks again Blackie!
Fantastic!
Blackie, this is fabulous! Thank you!!!
Genius simplicity, I will be modifying my ridgeline to match, great presentation sir. 👍🏼🙏🏼
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Blackie, looks good. Take care.
I make my soft shackles with a false Turks head on one end, and on the looped end I use a larks head to lock the skackle closed.
Interesting setup. I prefer to fold the rope in two, pass it through the hole then secure it with a toggle. It makes it easier on the tarp. But your system is still very interesting that's for sure.Well done!
As a knot-ophile I have a sincere application for your latest creations.
GLAD YOU FOUND IT OF USE
That is a brilliant idea Blackie I was going to put some small carabiners on my end now I'm doing soft shackle but I used the Celtic button knot or Diamond Knot as some people call it on the end of mine.
sounds good
Yeah Blackie, that system is magic. Great vid.
I love it!
Once again, great stuff my friend 🤠
Thanks for the visit
Everyone has their preferred way. I like the bowline at one end with the spike (Marlin Spike) and a trucker's hitch at the other end. Quick release and you're on your way. Just seems quicker to me.
Pretty smart concept brother i am gonna adopt it lol
safe journeys p.s. it rides well in a blackbird haversack lol
@@BLACKIETHOMAS hahaha i bet it does brother thanks you aagin
super video! Thanks a lot!
Good video and tips , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thanks for watching!
That's a pretty slick trick
glad you like it
Outstanding!!
Excellent work in thought and presentation!
Thank you kindly!
Awesome idea gotta try it thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Great video I learned something new! Great videos ...keep em coming.
New subscriber! Your tips and tricks are second to none!
Awesome! Thank you!
First video of yours I have seen. Makes sense, now if I can just retain it till I get out there again. You must make a good bit off you vids, all the ads you have. Thanks for posting Mr. Thomas! 🙂
safe journeys to you
Great video!😊
Very clever! I suspect that using a toggle will allow easier tensioning than just an Evenki knot or marlin spike knot. I must go out and find a stick to play with. 😁
I do the same exact thing with my ridgeline except for the soft shackles. Instead of the soft shackles I just use a stick as a toggle. A lot less messing around.
Thanks for the instruction. I keep a fast deployment ridgeline in my backyard for training purposes. This is one is eloquent and deserves attention . . . and practice. Thanks.
Good job..
Blackie: I like your ridge line setup. However, I have a couple of comments. 1. Bank line has a strength of about 160# and paracord about 500#. On the end of the ridge line with the toggle the insertion of the bank line creates a weak point in the ridge line which in certain weather conditions could cause the tarp to collapse. Maybe the use of a truckers hitch on that end would be safer. 2. I do like the toggles and would use them in several places. 3. I like the use of orange paracord for this purpose. It may keep others not so familiar with tarp shelters from inadvertently using it as a necklace. Keep'em coming.
Awesome knowledge TY for sharing I have saved this to my collection so I can refer back to it. Tomorrow I will make one for my self 👍🔥⛺️
Go for it!
You Sir are a true Woodsmen Master!!! Please write your book already!!! Cheers
Wow, thank you!
Good job on swapping your prusik cordage, that was my only complaint about your otherwise excellent ridgeline system. I've always found 550 too slippery for those type of knots. They hold, but you gotta fuss with them. Never heard of "bank line", I just used the smallest diameter rope the local climbing store had, but it was way more $$ than whatever "bank line" showed up on Amazon, so I'll be using that from now on. Thks for all the knowledge my man, I've been relying on tarps for shelter quite a bit this season BECAUSE your vidz showed me how easy it is to do so! Keep it up!
thanks i will do my best
Your becoming one of my top pages to watch. 👍👍 keep it up
Wow, thanks!
That toggle cinch strap may be one of the handiest tricks I've seen in a long while.
i keep thinking of new uses
this is the coolest rope video I have seen in awhile. One request - in the description have a link to a video on each knot used for easy "how do I do that" kind of searching.
Saw Felix Immler show the toggle on his UA-cam channel, but not in such great detail. ( it looked like he was using a trucker’s hitch instead of the Prussic
knot.) This was fantastic…really clearly demonstrated . Thanks Blackie! From a new subscriber in Nova Scotia. Cheers Mike.
thanks for the visit
Blackie , You did a Outstanding Job on that ridge line ,you made that so easy. I want to tell you that My son and I went to a gun show in Paris, TN. I did buy me another Kukri I paid $45.00 it's not a real Kukri but it's handmade, nice and thick and fits lose in the sheath I'll need to fix that and put a edge on it. Thanks For Teaching Us new tricks and tips on Woods craft and Bush craft. Tim L.
my pleasure..safe journeys to you
A really great helper! Thank you!
Any time!
Nice ridgeline kit
Right on
thats pretty kool man i think i will go make one of those right now great video see you on the next one

Instead of using shackles at the tarp eyelets, just use the prussick to toggle a stick...faster setup/takedown. Also, I use shock cord (instead of bank line or paracord) whenever tarp eyelets are under tension, especially if medium to strong winds are present. This will prevent your eyelets from ripping out.
I run my tarp connected to my ridgeline with prusics but it all stays in a snakeskin, I going to try this method and try and get rid of all 5 metal biners. Thank you for putting out functional content we all can use.
This was brilliant! Watching from England. I’m going to learn this. You make it look easy but I’m sure it’ll take me a while. I subscribed after watching this. I like your style and ingenuity.
Going to have to give this a try
hope it works well for you
I know that as a locking larkshead, great knot
Gonna reconfigure all my quick deploy ridgelines in this manner . Making Immler toggles right now .
Whenever I rig a ridgeline, I wrap the line at least three times around the tree, crossing over above and below the original wrap. It takes a bit longer to set up and take down, but this won't slip under any circumstances, barring a tree falling onto it or one of the trees to which it is attached toppling over.
Awesome!
Brilliant!
thank you
Let me try again. Much shorter. Blackie, you are ALMOST there. 1) Many commenters say to use a marlin spike hitch on the first tree. I agree. 2) If you don't have/want a toggle mounted on your ridgeline, run the 3rd prusik loop around tree #2 and use it to make a second marlin spike hitch. Tighten by holding the prusik knot stationary and pulling the ridgeline through it. 3) use a half-hitch both to lock this prusik knot and hold the remaining rolled up ridgeline. 4) the "soft-shakles" are cool but fussy and unnecessary for the tarp application. Just push the prusik loops through the grommets, fold to create two side loops (like you showed on the soft-shakle video) and insert another toggle. Cheers!
Great video.
I use longer amsteel soft shackles for all my ridge line prusik(s) that away each pruisk is a single component prusik/shackle thats easy to manage on the line and multi function. Para cord soft shackles can work the same. Id probably just use 220 for the prusik/shackle so it’d bit better on 550 line.
I haven’t used a toggel on ridge line. Im going to add a couple to one of my lines and try that. That looks like it’ll help a lot with setup and take down time.
Thanks for the info!
Hey Blackie, I've been seeing a number of videos from across the pond where Brits are using something called "Jungle Knots" for tarps or poncho shelters. Interested to see the Blackie version.
Before watching the video I thought you already had something like that, I could have sworn I got the idea from one of your videos a long time ago. I use a toggle on both ends and it is fast as hell to set up and take down. In my setup the first end does not have the rope go through the loop completely. Just enough to make a small loop I drop a steel tent spike in and then pull tight.
i did the toggle is the big improvement
Nice!
Thanks!
Hey Blackie, try this, instead of a bowline on the initial end, tie some sort of stopper knot ( overhand, figure eight, whatever) then tie a prusik made of bank line onto the ridge line slide it up out of the way, go around the tree, slide the prusik back down the line, loop it over the stopper knot, slide it back down tight, no fumbling the whole wad through the bowline. Even quicker setup and take down.
good idea..tons of ideas with this design
Clever way to use the toggle. Blackie got that video showing my twist on the quick guyline. Come on over and take a look when you have a chance.
hey great send me a link to the video i will check it out
@@BLACKIETHOMAS here it is ua-cam.com/video/VZeUh_0mPHw/v-deo.html
Install another toggle next to the bowline knot the you've got a no knot ridge line. Faster to deploy and take down.
Use Dutchware Titanium Clips
Another improvement beautiful enjoy
Wifey wants one of these please.
ok baby you got it
Nice system, cheers!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very simple, very easy. Don't cut yourself don't burn yourself I see you. Do you remember that cook that used to say that little line there, I don't remember his name but it wasn't Justin. Just a little memory jogging. Stay vigilant.
You could add another toggle after the bowline so you can pass the toggle through the bowline making a marlinespike hitch so that you don't have to pass the ridge line through the bowling loop
VERY TRUE !
I dumped the bowline and replaced it with your soft shackle - works great, less cordage, and im not trying to squeeze my line through the loop anymore, just attaching to it.
Same
i am going to add a toggle to the front so the smaller bowline will be a connector to the front toggle
I do like the soft shackle idea, but not the toggle. The toggle is more of a hassle than a truckers hitch to me.
Hi Blackie ,just a thought why don't you create the blackbird plastic toggle, 13 mm plastic solid round tubing like. Promote for emergency.
If you put a second toggle stick in front of the prusiks you could jut pul a small section through your bowline knot and use it hat as a toggle and have another side be quick release
very true a quick release on both ends
You should dangle a toggle off of the bowline and use it to secure to the first tree without passing everything through the bowline using a marlin spike hitch. You can also soft shackle onto a loop at the other tree and lock it to your prussick as opposed to using the toggle on the other end. Seems more secure to me than using the toggle/marlin spike hitch. Of course there are as many ways to do a Ridgeline as there are people in the woods. Haha.
This is something I can use. This is something that makes sense
wonderful..i am sure once you start using it many new ideas will pop up
Blackie, another top notch video! Thank you, sir. I don't know if you have covered this already or not. But, I don't recall anyone (you, Corporal Corner, Dave Cantabury) that has done a video about what personal hygiene items one would want to include in their pack/haversack? You know like toilet paper, hand sanitizer/soap, etc. etc.......
Yes I have i think but it was yrs ago..i may need to up date it
The use of a toggle is really nice. Do we lose the 2 x 1 mechnical advantage in tightening down the ridge line that the truckers hitch gives us, or is that 2x1 advantage still there when using this toggle alternative?
Nice solution, but there are nicer! 👍
No knots is great
lot easier on us old guys with clumsy fingers lol
@@BLACKIETHOMAS I know, and I wear gloves as much as I can to protect my delicately aged skin. I look like I've been in a street fight with a Wildcat.
Hi, can the prusik knot be made with the para cord or cordage a bit thicker than the thin twine you use on the ridgeline? I really like the quick and easy pre-set up of the ridgeline, soft shackles being pre-made for easy setup of shelter and camp site.
Prusik can be made with paracord, but with #36 (three strand) bankline which is tared is less likely to fall of the ridgeline when not in use.
A marlin spike at the bowline end is so much faster and easier for quick deployment as well as take down
Oh yeah!
The Ridgeline would be even simpler, if you have a toggle on each side of the ridge line and loops on the tarp. Put the toggles through the loops at the Tarp and you get a continuous ridgeline, which allows you to move your Tarp between the trees easily.
There's a lot of knots being used in this demonstration.
How about a toggle through the bowline loop, too? Some 3/8" aluminum rod might make very good toggles, as well. It's cheap, easy to work, and very durable. Thanks for the video!
I AM THINKING THAT TOO !! MANY IDEAS POP UP
These quick deploy ridgeline ideas are great. Have you thought about putting a soft shackle on the bowline to eliminate the need to pass the entire ridgeline and toggle through the loop?
yes and a toggle up front..lol the more i look at it the more ideas i get . thanks for the comment
I like how the rope is hanked up how did you start it to get it that way? I've looked through your other videos and can't find how if you've already made a video on it
My only concern is that your trusting a lot of tensile strength to bank line, otherwise i applaud your ingenuity.
Bank line is nylon line with tar on it and can withstand more stress and abuse than any tarp can dish out.
I just rap it around the tree 3 to 4 times run the end under the raps. The weight on line keep it tight no nots I'm done under a min I can clip in my hammock to the raps done it for years. Quick eazy
really like the vids, when doing these why not start a timer to show actual set up and take down time before the tutorial just asking for my Grandson we are working on his first kit now, he's 8 and to the point he's starting with questions like "exactly how long does it take this way or that way" Best wishes to you and yours, thanks again for the vids
lol i hear ya i have a young friend like that ..he wants to race ya in set up camp
Did i miss something??? What is the snapped wrapped pocket on your haversac strap ?
the tinder bag / water filter for my grail.. its my multi bag..go to abnormaloutdoors.com if you would like one
As others have suggested, you could just toggle off the first anchor (using a bight through the bowline) to save pulling all the line through. Also, could toggle off all the tarp connectors with toggles through larkspurs. I've been experimenting with wine cork toggles ;-)
thanks
I use duffle coat toggles and 3mm paracord.
I have been watching you for the last ten years or so, Ive seen you pitch up hammocks, tarps and tents, ridge lines, guy lines, tie bowlines, filter water to get the munchies out then boil up the water to kill the Bactria, discuss packs, make haversacks, talk about knives and kukri 's and hatchets... All good and all fun to watch but the one thing I'd like to see is, how to find water in the "wilderness" that's not in a lake, pond, river or creek ... How about doing that
did it ..HERE YA GO ..ua-cam.com/video/DyDRn8yvfrU/v-deo.html
