Some of the foods you use, I can´t seem to find in Denmark. I like the frozen food, because I know what they are made of. The store sell some Tetra dry foods, but the ingredients are not clear on the content. My neighbor has some koi, and got some small pellets for the young ones, and I though, maybe I could buy a little from him. But when I asked about that at the petstore, he said, there was to much protein in koi food for the Betta. That got me confused, I thought Betta need high protein food?
With only two Bettas and a snail, I don´t think I´m ready for doing live foods yet.
Ps. My little skinny one seems to be ok. Watching closely with a magnifying glass, for any kind of infection. Today he swam into my palm, and rested for a little. This is a dangerous hobby :-D

Thanks, Rachel. That was a very helpful video. We are hunkered down with high winds and falling snow, hoping we won't lose power, which has been flickering now and again. These northeast storms are such a nuisance! Tomorrow we return to the icebox at least for a while. The mild fall spoiled us. So today is good for vacuuming substrate and changing the water.

Great Video as always! Thanks to your species spotlight (and tons of reading) i could finally decide on some fish for my tank.
Just recently got some kubotai, and have some questions, tried reading up, but as there is just limeted documentation (in both english and german language)...
I have a small "problem" with agression(?) (some serious chasing) of these guys from one ot another. The chased party is changing. Is that courtship/mating behavior oder a real problem of maybe overstocking/stress/not enaugh food/to much current/anything else? (12 in a foot cube about 10 gallons, feeding small amounts 2-5 times a day, they are always!!!!! hungry but fat and flow set quite high as they seem to like it, or at least at first, nowadays their behavior doesn´t change too much with the change of flow, but it is much)
Also: They really have some changing color. They are mostly that nice vibrant green with some gleaming blue up top, but that sometimes changes to a very coppery color. Different species? Stress? Wtf? Comes close to the rubescens. But as they are green most of the time and like the soft water i dont believe they are.
Their behavior when not chasing/being chased is: schooling or shoaling around (the extend changes), not being shy at all. Rather confident. Behaving just like fish should.
Other than that, the tank is more on the high tech side, 11W Light, Eheim filter for up to 50 gallon tanks, in line co2, UVC, a Söchting Oxydator (adds more oxygen to the water). Water is soft, GH: 6°; lightly acidic, pH around 6,4; KH around 6°; no problems with amonia nitrate and nitrite. Tank mates: bee shrimp, and snails (clithon sp.)
Thanks for any answers by anyone!

I just recently picked up some bug bites for my tiger oscar. He seems to like them. I'm not sure I like how they put stuff like potato in it though. I've been using the tropical bug bite granules for about a year and a half my community fish with no issues. I don't feed it as a staple though, for my staple I use northfin community. The best food is always the food your fish will eat. I've tried feeding my fish new life spectrum but they won't touch it.

Also i wanted to ask you, you said that you feed the shrimp tank two times a week. What would you do if a fishtank has shrimps but also few types of tetras, snails and corys. Still two times a week or more frequently ?
Btw your haircut is simply the best today.

I am doing a diet that is similar to Keto, so almost all fresh foods and good quality meats/seafood. I avoid all processed grains, sugar, and beer and eat 4 or 5 meals a day and drink a lot of water. I am not qualified to offer nutrition advice, but its the same diet that I ate growing up and it is very much agreeing with me. It is much more of a lifestyle change then a diet, in all honesty.

Hi Rachel 😊 I had a nerite snail die one Xmas Eve and found an Amano shrimp dead on Xmas day. I did an ammonia test after both deaths and it showed 0 so went ahead and did my usual 10% change. I did my regular water test 3 days later and though it was yellow, there was a very slight greenish tint so I bought some Ammo-lock and decided to keep an eye on things. By Friday my ammonia was nearer 0.25 so I did a 15% water change and decided to use the Ammo-lock. I've been testing every other day and using the Ammo-lock as per the instructions. I've trimmed all plants that looked even slightly sorry for themselves, checked nothing else had died, added a chunk of polyfilter and vacuumed the gravel. Today the ammonia had gone up to 0.5 and I have no clue why. I knew Ammo-lock would give me an ammonia reading, even though it's been converted, but I can't understand why it's gone up. I also started to get a bluish tint to the nitrite.
I don't want to meddle and end up doing more harm than good so I'm wondering of several smaller water changes rather than a big one would be better? Just for clarity, this is my current tank which is nearly 3 years old, not the new one. Thanks. 😊

      @RachelOLeary  6 років тому +2

How mysterious! Have you checked with your municipal water supply to see if they have done a recent flush? You may want to call htem and ask.

Rachel O'leary Well, I lost all my fish in January '16, despite religiously using tap water conditioner. I suspect my local water was the culprit for that and they did send me a water report and whilst it didn't show up anything conclusive, the water still definitely smelled of Chemicals which was why I decided to switch to remineralised R.O. (it wasn't expensive for a 17 gallon tank) and I've been using it successfully ever since (my fish love it).

Good food is soooo important. Unfortunately I learned it the hard way. By giving my various tetras and ottos and corys common fish shop food like crisps pleco tablets I have noticed that they get bloated often. And I was reading about it. The wheat content in the food is making this. It is just they same with us. New studies show that the wheat we eat today is different from that we where eating 20 years ago. It’s just too much modified now. It’s getting less natural and we get bloated as well. Same with fish. After some time reading fish with those foods I ve noticed some deaths - even unsuspected ones. Now I feed them only natural foods like frozen and I just drop from time to time some veggies like a cucumber. I they love it. No deaths reported. Looking healthy and colourful. So learn that I should provide them with good diet of natural food. Thanks for the videos.
