When the Beatles were practicing meditation in Rishikesh, India, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the leader of Transcendental Meditation, gave a lecture on the harmony between nature and man.
John and Paul were so impressed by the content that they wrote their own songs.
John wrote “Child of Nature” and Paul wrote “Mother Nature's Son”.
Both were great songs.
However, some time later, due in part to an awkward breakup with the Maharishi, John decided not to include “Child of Nature” on the “White Album”.
John had feelings for the song itself, so he tried to adapt it in a way that would hide the existence of the Maharishi, such as changing the place name Rishikesh in the lyrics to Marrakesh, Morocco.
However, the feeling of being out of focus could not be shaken, and this song was never released during the Beatles era.
Time changed and after the Beatles disbanded, “Child of Nature” was reborn as “Jealous Guy” with a significantly different title and lyrics.
The song was eventually included on the album “Imagine”.
I think this is a famous episode that is well known among fans.
In adapting “Child of Nature,” John probably recalled how he felt when he first wrote the song.
Perhaps he took this approach to the adaptation because he apologized for the disrespect he had shown to Maharishi in the past and did not ignore his feelings of guilt.
At least it doesn't sound like a song dedicated solely to Yoko Ono or a message directed solely at Yoko Ono.
I think “Jealous Guy” is one of John’s signature songs, including the wonderful production by Phil Spector.
However, ironically, the song ended up having a completely opposite meaning to the original “Child of Nature”.
However, both are John's honest feelings, and I think both are masterpieces.
Personally, I'm more drawn to the purity and loving mood of “Child of Nature.”
The first thing that comes to mind when I hear this melody is “Child of Nature.”
I love “Jealous Guy,” but sometimes it just sounds like this.
ビートルズがインドのリシケシュで瞑想修行をしていた時、超越瞑想の指導者マハリシ・マヘーシュ・ヨーギーは自然と人の調和について講話を行いました。
その内容に大きな感銘を受けたジョンとポールはそれぞれに曲を書き上げました。
ジョンが書いたのは”チャイルド・オブ・ネイチャー”、ポールが書いたのは”マザー・ネイチャーズ・サン”。
どちらも素晴らしい名曲でした。
しかし、その暫く後、ジョンはマハリシと気まずい決別をしてしまったせいもあり、”チャイルド・オブ・ネイチャー”を『ホワイトアルバム』に収録するのを取り止めました。
ジョンは曲自体に思い入れがあったので、歌詞にあった地名リシケシュをモロッコのマラケシュに変えるなど、マハリシの存在を隠すような形で改作を試みます。
しかし、ピントがずれた感じは拭いきれず、ビートルズ時代にこの曲を発表することはありませんでした。
時は移りビートルズ解散後、”チャイルド・オブ・ネイチャー”はタイトルと歌詞を大きく変えた”ジェラス・ガイ”として生まれ変わります。
そして最終的にアルバム『イマジン』に収録されました。
この辺りはファンの間ではよく知られた有名なエピソードだと思います。
”チャイルド・オブ・ネイチャー”を改作するにあたり、ジョンは最初に曲を作ったときの気持ちを思い出しだのではないでしょうか。
もしかすると、その中で過去にマハリシに対して行った非礼へのお詫び、罪の気持ちを無視でなかったからこそ、こういうアプローチで改作をしたのかもしれません。
少なくともオノ・ヨーコだけに捧げた曲、オノ・ヨーコだけに向けたメッセージというわけではないように聴こえます。
“ジェラス・ガイ”はフィル・スペクターによる素晴らしいプロデュースも含めてジョンの代表曲のひとつだと思います。
ただ皮肉にも本来の”チャイルド・オブ・ネイチャー”とまったく真逆の意味を持つ曲になってしまいました。
しかし、どちらともジョンの偽らざる気持ちであり、どちらとも名曲だと思います。
個人的には”チャイルド・オブ・ネイチャー”にある純粋さ、愛に溢れたムードにより惹かれます。
このメロディーを聴いて最初に思い出すのも”チャイルド・オブ・ネイチャー”です。
“ジェラス・ガイ”は大好きですが、時々こんな風に聴こえてしまうことがあります。
