  • We had 109 bales of straw delivered to our building site last week.
This video is an introduction to how we'll be infilling the walls of the cabin.

Thank you for making this, did you ever work out the mixer you mentioned? I'm considering this as infill between roundwood posts, rather than strawbale which while quicker is a lot thicker and would hide the posts when finished flat.

Here's a video about the mixer build:

It would be a shame to do all that joinery and then hide it in the wall. I did like that light straw clay gave me flexibility with my wall widths.

Hey! How does this compare for cost and time to more conventional forms of insulation? Very interesting!

Cost wise it's less than conventional insulation. Between the straw and the dirt is was less than $400. Also, If you go over it with earthen plaster that's a pittance compared to other sheathing and finishing options.
Labor-wise it takes significantly more time than installing conventional so the decision probably comes down to time versus money.
Other think I like about light straw clay walls are that they're vapor permeable so mold isn't and issue and they're non toxic versus a lot of conventional forms of insulation that will off gas.

Can this be used in between drywall in a conventional home?

      Hi Sandy,
Yes, you could put sheet rock panels over light straw clay. I personally wouldn't though.
If I was doing conventional drywall and I think I would use non-toxic insulation batts(e.g. wool or recycled cotton) in the stud cavities. Light Straw Clay is really labor intensive but the upside is that you can directly apply your finish plaster to it.

@@offgridburbia Thank you. Would you not do it because it is labor-intensive or is there another reason?

@@Mrssandypeterson I think it's too labor-intensive if it's going to be covered up by drywall.

What made you decide on this method?

From a materials stand point I like that straw and clay are non toxic, non off gassing materials and that straw is a waste product so fairly low embodied energy all around. From a building science stand point I like that light clay straw has a fairly good insulation value and is vapor permeable preventing mold growth. Aesthetically, I like the look, feel and calming presence of earthen walls. From a community standpoint packing walls was a good way to spend several weekends with my friends. That generally covers my reasoning.

Instructional videos NEED narration... not quirky music. Bye!

@@e.r.1492 Back when I was strapped to a desk I would watch building and homesteading videos with the volume turned off so I always appreciated those ones with subtitles or in video text descriptions. The Nito Project does really good instructional videos with no audio:
