  • Dr. Daniel Black joins Karen for an after-The Karen Hunter Show (on SiriusXM) conversation about the #NYTimes interview with #JannWenner about why he didn't interview Black artists or women for his latest book on music. He said he couldn't find any articulate enough. Dr. Black breaks down why our music and the articulation of it cannot be done through a yt power structure.

I sat in a room full of white art therapist and asked them if they'd studied Black American music as a high form of art therapy. They sneer when they don't have a clue. I read the Jann Loser interview and was apoplectic all day. White people so rarely understand what they are really looking at. I needed that release. Thanks.

I am so annoyed every year with this "Oscar so white" and "Grammy so white" crap! Of course it's white. It was never created for us. We must value our own greatness. Any day we stop focusing on the white man's validation, we will see how much they want our attention.

The most ironic thing is they think we need their approval and when we don’t ever mad at us to the point at 62 years of age all I can do is laugh so hard my until my stomach hurts 😜😜😜😜

Sounds to me like when Jann recognized a thing that is so beyond his understanding, he developed a hate for it that he did his best to treat it as irrelevant rather than have to admit it was a height and a depth he and those like him didn't have the capacity for.

Black people need to own their music i.e publish, distribute and buy it then create a black magazine to celebrate it. It's time to transition away from Rolling Stones and music industry racism and establish a future toward totally independence.❤❤❤❤❤

ASE 🎉Dr. Black was on point! Let me state, THE WRONG PEOPLE ARE GIVING INTERPRETATION TO BLACK MUSIC🎉WP cannot interpret SPIRIT from a non-spiritual standpoint. "Know the SPIRIT, by the SPIRIT." This is why we need these platforms! To combat, critique these pathologies being put out by WS media. I believe this was a distraction to get a rise out of us. We are still the greatest story! Loved the discussion Professor Karen ❤

OMG! This is probably the best discussion I've heard about Jann's comments versus the reality and truth about music. I had a Black instructor in college who was also a musician who played with some of the jazz greats (Ella, Nina, Billie, Sarah, etc.). He made himself quite clear. Rock n' Roll would not even exist had it not been for BLACK MUSIC. If you talk to some of the great white rockers, they would all say, rock n' roll would not exist without black music. And jazz and blues is some of the original black music. So true. So sad to be Jann Wenner.

The reason Weiner would not interview us or women was that he didn’t want a different narrative. His intent was no emotion, history, feelings or anything that made the music great. He wanted sex, drugs and interpretations of Rock and Roll from a perspective he feels comfortable with. I grew up in the 60’s and the establishment has always looked down on black music. They said our genius wasn’t technically proficient and the music was simple. While their music was essentially noise.

Whoa!!!🔥the anointed sounds in church transforms everyone who is open to it. If the sound moves you that’s the Holy Spirit. The preacher is a there to appeal to your mind to break the stubbornness of your intellect. The choir breaks your hardened heart. If they do their job correctly, you will cry out!🙌🏽🔥🙏🏽
Thank you for that spiritual vitamin today Professor Hunter and Dr. Black.
See THIS conversation is way over Mr RS head. He’s so ignorant about rock music which originated from Sister Rosetta Tharpe, that he doesn’t know he’s stupid.
Oh and RS has had him gainfully employed for decades knowing exactly who and what he is.
A studio recording musician told me years ago that the Rolling Stone magazine was self important and we should not give it any measure of distinction. Now that’s confirmed he was correct in that assessment.

Not only the trauma, but the amalgamation of culture: the blend of African tongues and cultures is what makes music and art of the Diaspora so unique. Our ancestors took fragments of different cultures and created beauty. They can't even begin to understand, that we don't have to articulate it. The audacity to leave out Black artists when they are the originators.

I believe it is critically important that black people root our story in our pre-European African origins as opposed to the traumatic impact of white supremacy on our people. This sort of thinking does not ignore the true history and pain of our people but rather, gives us an opportunity to heal, connect, grow, and love ourselves whole again. This will be able to reconnect the lost children of kidnapped African peoples with our tribes, our history, and our traumatized African counterparts that were not kidnapped from the continent and thereby impacted quite differently.
    beautiful post,

As I've always advocated, black artists should have always refused inclusion into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. The inclusion of black artist was always an attempt at hegemony. That is, an attempt to bring black music under the umbrella of rock and roll. The Rock n Roll HOF therefore has been attempting to be the arbiter of music quality and depth. Thus, it warmed my heart that Dolly Parton initially refused the induction into the R&RHOF. She was refusing them the clout of incorporating her and thus the appearance of even evaluating the quality or performance of country music. I want black artists to do the same. Amother high moment of R&RHOF performances was when Prince showed up and shut down all those storied white HOF guitarists--such as Tom Petty, etc.. And I think something can be said of the fact that the HOF founder has become gay and apparently now lives in a highly concentrated--if noy an exclusive--white male environment. So much for coalition.
About Dr. Black, his energy and many of his pounts r soothing to the spirit.
    Thanks for this addition! Ashe.
