I'd pick the iPhone for video if it's what you'll mostly do, and you get the benefit of a longer battery life. The S22U does have great video though, and beats the iPhone in almost everything else, but even then, by barely (other than zoom).
The camera on the iPhone 13 looks better in the video but the photos on the S22 look so much cleaner and more detailed. As an apple fanboy I have to admit that Samsung is better this time. Great comparison as always!
I wish the Samsung can catch up with the iPhone with video, that 13 pro max video is clean AF, maybe the galaxy s23 will catch up in the video department. I'm using the pixel 6 at the moment and the camera is pretty good for a 600 dollar phone but the bugs and weak modem in this phone ensure that I will probably not get another pixel phone.
The mic in the S22 Ultra is incredible. So clean sounding compared to the Iphone which you can hear a lot of wind and background noise from. I think the mic quality of the new samsung phone is what impresses me most in this video.
Honestly, video on the 13 pro max takes the cake here. Much more natural colours and better contours and depth, compared to the s22 ultra’s slightly overexposed shots. Although, the mic on the s22 ultra is leaps and bounds better
This was a pretty good and engaging video. I've basically never cared about the camera when picking my phone to purchase(accidentally clicked this vid as I'm subbed to the channel) but somehow I ended up watching this whole vid genuinely intrigued at all the comparisons. Didn't realize how far Samsung has come with photo quality(still currently rocking a Note 9)
As owner of the ip13pro (and ex owner S21ultra) I have to admit that photos from s22ultra seems to me better, more pleasing, consistent, not washed out colors and without lighting artifacts. I remember that I had issue with moving subjects on S21ultra, it's difficult to catch it in video and I am happy that Tom at least tried it. Btw , this was exynos version, right ?
Why the stability is not right from the beginning and we have to wait for some update. This is not a good advertisement for Samsung. Everyone will remember that stabilization is bad for Samsung and better for the iPhone. Stabilization should have been good now so that Samsung can at least try to compete with the iPhone.
@@McDjMagicAndrey I agree but the Iphone has been the king of video stability / video recording for the past couple of years. Samsung needs to make their own software to optimize the hardware to the fullest imo. I pre ordered my s22 ultra 512g snapdragon version and I can't wait for hands on. Peace!
Loved the camera comparison, great to see a less artificial and more down to earth camera comparison. Follows on the style of Supersaf but with a different take, testing the phones in a wide variety of locations. Keep it up! Last but not least, I'd go with Samsung too (S pen is also a big factor there)
I don't really agree with you. I'm a samsung owner, an S10. In 1:21 look at the metal door and the stabs, the details are dead (prob cause of algorithms. I did really hope that finally Samsung would fix it, but still nothing
Really like the comparison and reasoning behind choice. After seeing a few videos like this I think it's clear to say objectively Samsung takes better photos although it still depends on personal preferences and iPhone takes better videos, so if you take more videos than photos you'd prefer the iPhone and viceversa, not bringing ecosystems into consideration that is.
We've reached the point where we go "They are good but just not good enough" vs few years ago where we'll say "amazing cameras improvements" We really need some sort of camera break through here, perhaps a new sensor technology to replace CMOS for better light capture on a smaller sensor and high megapixel count where digital zoom also can do an amazing job of getting closer without losing much details.
Clearly S22 in all aspects except for stabilisation in video during light should be improved (during night iphone was miles ahead any other phone and here there is little difference).
I'm kinda leaning on S22 Ultra here. The 13 pro max is dim when it comes to video taking, almost to the point where it has a filter on while the S22 Ultra seems so vibrant. I wonder if samsung is using something processing methods to have theirs so vibrant.
Samsung cameras usually get better a month after release (especially the s10 in 2019, the selfie cam was a disaster and stabilisation also got better by a lot)
My galaxy S10 plus just died 1 month ago because the motherboard gave up, i didnt even use it that much, i used my galaxy A3 2016 more intensively then the S10 lol and yet im not still stuck with the A3 after 6 years, still great phone tho and the galaxy S10 plus definitely got better camera software tho
This might just be the biggest camera difference btw two generations of a phone. I mean, the S22 Ultra's camera is significantly better than the S21U, especially the portrait mode. I think Samsung now inarguably has the best portrait mode among all smartphones
idk about portrait that might be a little bit too far... but the mic quality is so damn good. The S22 ultra mic sounds like a mic that is trying to isolate sound and focus more on your voice, while the iPhone 13 pro is like a wide spectrum, which is trying to pick up all of the sounds around you. Idk which one I prefer because while I like isolated mics while Im on a video call, if im showing someone a video of something cool in nature, I would ant them to hear all of the sound.
@Uravcommenter somehow, I've been obsessed with portrait picture lately, so for me, it's kind of easy to see how well it improved. And you are totally right about the mic. While I like S22U's isolated mics, I still like 13's more open mic. But, for samsung, you can adjust how your mic works when you use pro video
Software updates are definitely needed. I’m also curious about the difference between SD 8 gen 1 vs exynos on photo differences. The portrait video looked terrible on the s22 here. I’ve seen reviews where it looked better on Samsung (SD version). I owned the s21 ultra then switched to iPhone 13 and I MISS the s21 ultra camera. After updates I felt the s21 ultra was superior in everything except video. The versatility was amazing. However, I find my iPhone to be more consistent. Every once in a while the s21 did some weird stuff with coloring and blurry photos on moving subjects. It looks like Samsung fixed the blurry photo issue. I just wish the contrast and colors were right in the middle of these. The iPhone dynamic range on some photos and videos is 🔥
Let's try to keep in mind that the IPhone 13 PM has alot of updates whereas the S22 Ultra hasn't had all the planned updates its getting for the camera and video so its gonna be unstoppable and incomparable in a month or 2.
Samsung is improving for me, the images are tighter and the bokeh heffects are far better, because I've compared them to the operators where they're exposed, plus samsung has just appeared, and the software hasn't been updated yet, so it's going to be even better.
Wow, the cameras on the S22 Ultra are shockingly amazing! Samsung definitely cleaned up with its AI. Seriously can't wait till I get mine around mid-March.! Personally, I may not like the boosted contrast look in all the shots, although it'll probably look good in most scenarios. Also, I've seen in other videos that the shadows are brought down to increase clarity; something else to consider. I'm just taking mental notes on how I'm gonna be editing photos in post... hah!
What format were you using for photos? Personally, I would never let the phone decide on the final picture for me, hence shooting in RAW and developing in post. Regarding the exposure issue, that can be corrected by exposing for the hi lights, and pulling the shadows in post. A standard workflow for RAW dlsr captures. Vastly increase the visible dynamic range.
The green light or dit next to the camera is to show that the camera is active. It's meant to be a security measure so users have a more safe feeling of not being spied on.
I think that apple have reached the limits of a 12mp sensor and it’s finally starting to show. Can’t wait to see what their processing can do with more pixels to work with.
I just pre-ordered my S22 ultra. I'm coming from the S10 plus. The only thing I will miss is the ability to expand my memory. Unfortunately, att did not offer the 1 terabyte version, so I had to settle for the 512GB version. I use a lot of memory, and I am hoping I will not run out of storage before my next upgrade. I really wish Samsung would give us the ability to expand the memory in later models. I know, that ship may have sailed already. I may or may not cancel my pre-order. I'm still on the fence about the limited memory. Samsung is out of stock on the 1 terabyte version.
I have the 13 Pro Max right now, came from the S20 ultra, and I just miss the versatility with the cameras on Samsung devices, I'm considering switching back to Samsung.
One thing to note. It seems like the S22U tends to lean slightly darker. That means the image can be brightened in post processing and the detail will remain intact. Brighter images tend to lose detail that cannot be recovered in post processing.
Something I never see any reviewers mention is the shutter lag on with these cameras. My S21 Ultra would will sometimes take a second after I hit the shutter button before it actually takes a photo which means I’ve missed several photos of my family when trying to capture spontaneous moments. I also noticed my S21 Ultra had a bias towards using a slower shutter speed in order to keep the iso down in low light so often times my images where blurry. I read about many people having the same issue as me with the S21 Ultra, but some people said they didn’t. I also have an iPhone 13 pro and I’ve noticed it has zero shutter lag and will use a higher iso in order to get a faster shutter speed in low light. I would love to know if the S22 has fixed these issues as I would sell my iPhone 13 pro in a heartbeat in order to go back to Android.
@@bobmarley7787 that’s good, but there are plenty of people who do. It’s a known issue that dates back at least to the Galaxy S8. I don’t experience it on my Note 10 or my S8, but it was very noticeable on my s21 ultra. There are also videos on UA-cam that shot it happening on certain Galaxy phones. Samsung has known about the issue for a while as well.
@@Flying4Film false. They are an extreme minority. Vast majority don't have an issue with it at all. By that logic there are tons of videos with iPhone having shutter lag
Imagine if Samsung developed their own system software as the already have their own chip. This would be a serious game changer. They can maximize optimization. Rocket up al their phone battery life, performance.
@@asianstud7 You have a very simplified way of seeing it. Samsung phones run Android so are always limited by what Android can do when it comes to camera software. They essentially have to optimise their own software on top of Androids own
@@franklingoodwin you're talking about something else entirely. I said Samsung has so much smartphone market share that it can be worth it for them to have their own OS instead on relying on Android. So that they can better optimize and own and develop the "whole stack" like Apple can with ios. Also, fun fact. Samsung could have bought Android before Google. Unfortunately, looking back , it was a tremendous mistake on Samsungs part to not have bought it. Look it up!
I'm really interested in the 22 Ultra, but currently, I feel most video comparisons that I see the video it takes look jittery which kinda defeats the image stabilization.
For video, Apple has a fight but for everything else, The S22 Ultra kills. I just wish the Fold 4 would match the s22 Ultra in terms of camera and would also include a slotted S Pen and expandable memory. 4K display would be insane as well. Would be a day 1 for me no matter the cost
@@alexsmith1207 fold 3 didn't match the s21 ultra camera module so it's possible Samsung doesn't put too much emphasis on the camera because it's a productivity phone not a camera phone
Still quite early, Samsung phones receive huge camera updates in the first two months and throughout the first year of release. Hope they fix the stabilisation soon and add Expert Raw to S22U
Great content. As for the 🎤 the s22 ultra sounds much richer and clearer. To me s22 ultra pictures most of the time look more realistic. And don't forget the s22 ultra has the app something res. So you can do pro resolution.
I am an iphone user. But here S22 for sure I felt better. I always choose the picture which is social media ready and pleasing to eyes. And the sound quality of s22 while recording blown my mind😧
Thank you v much for this comparison video! I think you were v fair in your assessment and I really appreciated the range of scenarios you featured! 😁 Looking forward to future videos! 😌 I ordered an S22 Ultra in green and now I'm sooo excited!
I don’t know how relevant is this camera test before official launch which is in 25 feb, as Samsung said till then they will release an massive software update mostly regarding camera’s.if compares s21 ultra with S22 ultra, s21 ultra looks much brighter on any scenario so definitely s22 will get an massive update on cameras
That stabilisation on the S22U in the first minute of the video is so bad. But hopefully will get fixed with the release update. I think a lot of things might get fixed later on, which is a good sign (for example the yellowish colors as well).
It's surprising considering the s21 ultra had better stabilization than the iphone. And apparently the s22 series has 58% better ois. This is probably just due to the early software
Ordered a normal S22, hope it'll come close to these results. However, I have to say the Iphone really shines when filming. It seems to capture more detail in the shots and the lighting transition from dark areas to light ones seems to be more subtle.
Always love it when you do your phone tests in Wells. Fun fact, there is a boarding school there that was founded in 909 - before the battle of Hastings. There is a boarding house on Vicars Close. I know this because I went to this school and boarded in that very boarding house. My dad told me before I enrolled that it was going to be nothing like Hogwarts... Boy was he ever wrong.
gosh the samsung's detail, colours and skin tones in photos is incredible. unfortunately there are some key features that the iphone gives me that won't make me switch anytime soon but maybe one day.
When asking for moving objects I think its more important in lower light situations like indoors. Outside it's bright enough for the camera to choose a higher shutter speed. For me is video recording more important but can't get used to the iPhone. Still grab my S21 in most cases. I really hope Samsung fixes the camera jitter which is mainly due electronic stabilization.
Photos on S22 are aweswome! But video, id still go for 13 pro max. But, we’ll see when 14s get released. 13 isn’t a flagship. Just a processor and camera upgrade from the 12th. But 14, according to rumors will be. Awesome comparison.
i feel like if samsung can dail down the contrast and saturation for pictures slightly, and dial it up for videos ,it can be the best smartphone camera
I agree, I think the Samsung camera overall is the more reliable in most use cases. It’s weird but I feel my iPhone 11Pro max took better pictures than my 12Pro max and even my 13Pro max. The pictures seem to be getting more washed out as the go on, the dynamic range also seems to be worse. So often now my backgrounds are blown out. I feel iPhone still wins with video though but the only reason it’s still in my pocket is because of the eco system and work flow on my desk…especially with Universal Control, it’s incredibly useful and streamlined work flow incredibly well!
If phone manufacturers would start using glass lenses instead of plastic those images would look sharper and with less lens flare, especially in videos when there isn't much time to process the end results
I do think the iPhone does have some shots that, like you said, are more instagrammable, but you can easily adjust that on the Samsung while keeping the detail. You can't add the detail into the washed iPhone photo.
The problem with these sorts of reviews is that they fail to differentiate between the camera software and camera hardware (lenses plus sensor). That's important to me as I generally shoot in RAW. The shots here from the Samsung looked like the software had over-sharpened/over-"contrasted" them vs the iPhone. It said very little about whether the S22U really takes better shots. It's clear that the Samsung has a better telephoto lens, but the rest is not so clear to me. Of course, most people don't care to make a distinction between hardware/software, but if you phone camera is going to be anymore more than a glorified point-and-shoot then hardware vs software needs to be considered.
If they fix the stabilisation issue then to me the s22u is a clear winner. The mic is insane. Could use it for UA-cam vids and I genuinely wouldn't mind.
Pretty good comparison that seemed objective. I doubt that video stabilization issue will linger for long, my Note 10 Plus takes excellent stabilized videos. I saw Apple as a clear winner in the macro. It seemed that for color Apple went to the more warm approach of Samsung while Samsung went with the cooler look of the Iphones. LOL. Samsung photos look great except for what appeared to be some white balance issues on some photos. Detail continues to be Samsung's ace but this time I am very excited to see the noise control, something which is a problem in the Note 10 Plus. I would like to see more elaborate video shooting by the S22 Ultra though.
For video on androids there's now an app called Motioncam that enables shooting true RAW video, like actual CinemaDNG. I highly recommend giving it a try
Hey Tom, great content as always :) Long time iPhone user looking to make jump to S22 Ultra eek! Random q which you've probably heard before lol but where is your purple Nouveau cushion from? It's in the background of the photos you took of your cat. I'm a huge fan of Art Deco/Art Nouveau and would love to get some of these!
Great video - thanks! All this is very subjective and like you said, definitely also influenced by the ecosystem. I've always been an iPhone guy and have always used it as it's usually the camera I have on hand. Having said that, I think the gap is narrowing every year and it's almost getting to the point where all these high-end devices should be on par as far as quality is concerned and the real difference would be the few things that might set one apart from the other.
Thank you for the review. I think in photos S22U is a winner, only in macro photos iPhone looks much better. Sucks that S22u video stabilization is bad, really was hoping they would finally improve it. I doubt they will fix it with a software update. But sound is night and day difference, where S22u is ahead. And overall more vibrant and contrast photos look better, plus HDR on samsung looks better in a sunny environment. But I'm more interested in regular S22 vs iPhone13 pro and S22 vs S21 or S20 (is what i'm using). Hope you will upload a video on that.

Android 12 To my knowledge, there isn't a smartphone that can do this at present time and l believe in 2023 as well.
I think the edge detection in both Video and photos, S22 Ultra is better. In the video mode, the hair on top of your left ear was slightly blurry in iPhone whereas it was clear in S22 Ultra. Night photos are also clear and punchier with lot of details in S22 Ultra.

@@saibajinzero iphone better in video nightmode and macro, but its still early in 2022. I think iphone 14 will be the best cameraphone of 2022.
The microphone quality bests the iPhone hands down. It's so crisp like a nicely baked set of potato chips.
Samsung has always had the best microphone quality ❤️
Hmmm nope
@@CashCollecta then check your speakers or your ears
@@El-Hilfi ever Samsung I’ve owned has never had better speakers than my iphones
@@CashCollecta I am talking about the microphone not the speakers.
@@El-Hilfi oh that was for different comment didn’t even realize
I think that apple have reached the limits of a 12mp sensor and it’s finally starting to show. Can’t wait to see what their processing can do with more pixels to work with.
Next iPhone will be with 48 megapixels.
Watching this video makes me crave for an upgrade... from S21 Ultra to S22 Ultra. Samsung is really doing great! Wishing to have one. :)
Once you go over the typical storage of a computer or game console, with your phone, it's time to admit you have a problem. Seek help
Great comparison. I've been seeing alot of reviewers giving the crown to the iphone without really showing why. It's nice to see a decent comparison.
Fantastic video like always! what a beautiful village you chose to test the cameras! I'd go for the S22.
Thanks for the video mate, quick question… is there still a camera rattle when you shake the phone? Thanks
I have no shutter lag whatsoever
@@bobmarley7787 that’s good, but there are plenty of people who do. It’s a known issue that dates back at least to the Galaxy S8. I don’t experience it on my Note 10 or my S8, but it was very noticeable on my s21 ultra. There are also videos on UA-cam that shot it happening on certain Galaxy phones. Samsung has known about the issue for a while as well.
@@Flying4Film false. They are an extreme minority. Vast majority don't have an issue with it at all. By that logic there are tons of videos with iPhone having shutter lag
I personally Take more pictures with my phone than I take video so I’m going with s22 ultra💪🏽🔥🔥
I think 99% of us make a lot more pics than videos, the storage would be full very fast otherwise. :)
Imagine if Samsung developed their own system software as the already have their own chip. This would be a serious game changer. They can maximize optimization. Rocket up al their phone battery life, performance.
They really should they have a lot of the worlds market share to do so if they really wanted to .
@@asianstud7 You have a very simplified way of seeing it. Samsung phones run Android so are always limited by what Android can do when it comes to camera software. They essentially have to optimise their own software on top of Androids own
@@franklingoodwin I think they're saying ditch Android and create their own Samsung OS
@@Bmasta717 They already did, Tizen. It's not as good as Android and isn't on any of their phones or smartwatches
Seems like without 1st major update. S22U is holding up pretty well! Looking forward to it
For video, Apple has a fight but for everything else, The S22 Ultra kills. I just wish the Fold 4 would match the s22 Ultra in terms of camera and would also include a slotted S Pen and expandable memory. 4K display would be insane as well. Would be a day 1 for me no matter the cost
I mean, its clear it’s closer with almost all the factors but Samsung edges them just as Apple edges the video stabilisation.
If only Apple fixed night videos on iphones and not cheap out on glass to have reflections all over the place.
Fold 4 would of course match or be better than the S series considering it has its own unveiling in the fall
@@alexsmith1207 fold 3 didn't match the s21 ultra camera module so it's possible Samsung doesn't put too much emphasis on the camera because it's a productivity phone not a camera phone
@@sholaspeaks6672 that all could change don't forget fold 4 has it's own unveiling like what was once the Note.
Still quite early, Samsung phones receive huge camera updates in the first two months and throughout the first year of release. Hope they fix the stabilisation soon and add Expert Raw to S22U
I've preordered an S22 Ultra, and I'd love to see it doing well, but the iPhone's video stabilisation is just ouright better, its a shame.
Have you had the chance to try the 12-bit HDR on Samsung? As usual, great video.
S22 ultra was definitely better and the photos look very cinematic and dslr-like
Great content. As for the 🎤 the s22 ultra sounds much richer and clearer. To me s22 ultra pictures most of the time look more realistic. And don't forget the s22 ultra has the app something res. So you can do pro resolution.
Iphone proresRAW
I think you are spot on with the details on both phones. I Ordered my S22 Note and can't wait to get it in hand!
Audio sound on samsung really good tho😂
I am an iphone user. But here S22 for sure I felt better. I always choose the picture which is social media ready and pleasing to eyes. And the sound quality of s22 while recording blown my mind😧
Thank you v much for this comparison video! I think you were v fair in your assessment and I really appreciated the range of scenarios you featured! 😁 Looking forward to future videos! 😌 I ordered an S22 Ultra in green and now I'm sooo excited!
Samsung is officially back in the game again!
Well i am surprised how good smartphone photography has come but in videography it needs improvement
(Both Samsung & Apple + Every other brands)
I'm photographer with a Canon R5 beast. My new phone this year - S22 Ultra - hands down. Detail. Apple loses this one - period.
It still stomped the mud out of the iPhone though, so it doesn't matter
Come on Samsung, you just need to nail the Video Quality, hopefully an update could maybe get it close to iPhone's video capabilities.
Ordered a normal S22, hope it'll come close to these results. However, I have to say the Iphone really shines when filming. It seems to capture more detail in the shots and the lighting transition from dark areas to light ones seems to be more subtle.
Samsung’s video is still very jittery. Not at the level as 13 Pro Max but it is improving.
An update will fix it.
Much better colors than iphone. Iphone looks the same and boring since iphone x
@@amankorotania3222 Samsung colors are far from true to life now especially with S22U. For video, the iPhone captures the most accurate colors.
Galaxy finally got skin tones right. Galaxy all the way. Much more pleasing photos.
Hey @techchap kudos to you. That was a bold judgment whilst most reviewers chuckle to say it out.
This video left me speechless. Very nice review. Good job!
May I ask how was the battery? Did it also improve compare to S21U?
gosh the samsung's detail, colours and skin tones in photos is incredible. unfortunately there are some key features that the iphone gives me that won't make me switch anytime soon but maybe one day.
The difference in video HDR is insane at 0:35 😱 well done Samsung
Samsung finally got the win. .. great improvement 👏
Hmm, Tech Chap didn't react 😀
If phone manufacturers would start using glass lenses instead of plastic those images would look sharper and with less lens flare, especially in videos when there isn't much time to process the end results
I do think the iPhone does have some shots that, like you said, are more instagrammable, but you can easily adjust that on the Samsung while keeping the detail. You can't add the detail into the washed iPhone photo.
The S22 looks just a tiny bit better. I wouldn't switch phones, but Samsung has definitely upped their game.
Fantastic review as always. Agree with the S22 Ultra taking this one.
Great compare, I like Samsung more but i still have my IP13 Pro max cause battery life
Please make battery test between this two phone 📌
Thank you

Everytime the audio switched back to the iPhone's I was instantly annoyed.
Thats a huge and shocking difference.
2:51 Samsung has work to do. Apple was much faster with the background blur
Videos: iPhones by a little (but have noticed in several videos that iPhone picks up WAY more wind noise).
Photos: S22 by a lot
Great video - thanks! All this is very subjective and like you said, definitely also influenced by the ecosystem. I've always been an iPhone guy and have always used it as it's usually the camera I have on hand. Having said that, I think the gap is narrowing every year and it's almost getting to the point where all these high-end devices should be on par as far as quality is concerned and the real difference would be the few things that might set one apart from the other.
Sarah is amazing that she is using a Pixel!!! Love it
Thank you for the review.
Hope you will upload a video on that.
the microphone on the S22 is 💥

I think the edge detection in both Video and photos, S22 Ultra is better. In the video mode, the hair on top of your left ear was slightly blurry in iPhone whereas it was clear in S22 Ultra. Night photos are also clear and punchier with lot of details in S22 Ultra.
The portrait video on the Samsung is miles better than the cinematic video on the iPhone. The edges all around him are blurry on the iPhone.
Yeah she was right, should of included that pixel, I feel like w the updates, it’s a whole new animal
