Some of those trucks were running straight pipes, no mufflers- that should be illegal. Most had factory mufflers and were relatively quiet considering they have to crank out enough horsepower to pull 80,000 to 105,000 lbs.
i grew up with trucks in the 80s and 90s with my dad bieng a driver we used to have this kind of awesome diesel corus over here in the UK but now becouse of emissions and noise pollution sadly it no longer exists can hardly hear them now only on the odd few older trucks still hauling

I drive a roll off for waste management, but before I started they had a bunch of older model pete's that were loud as hell.
I drove a truck with straight stacks one time in my life. I was the best thrill I ever had. It was so bad that id rather have one of these diesels rather than a pickup. Just set it up so I can haul any trailer no matter what size it is...
ooohh! if i had one of thse buaties in trucks iwould not use it for work or buiness ! i would have it as my pose & cruise machine. go night club, corner sweet shop. go down the beach! have my deck chair beside it. lol.
Mark Ali-gilkes mine worked 21 days a month. Straight. In road salt up north, and everything else u can imagine. But six days after bein home (took that long to polish it.) I'd do just what u mentioned. Even took my girlfriend out in it lol. W900 L. 99 model. 8 inch straights midroof had the 16" visor and a Texas box bumper at 24 inches.

Today's modern trucks we use in food service are quiet. You can't even here the Jake brake. You feel it ,but very quiet.
