  • ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Staff at the Asheville Humane Society were told to expect something big, and they were told what day it was going to arrive - but not what it was.
Late last month, the delivery arrived at Samantha White, of Weaverville, was behind it. White had won a promotion through TD Bank, which gave her $25,000 to give to any charity of her choice. So because of her, the Humane Society and two other area shelters split a surprise donation of 30,000 pounds of pet food.
The food will go the Asheville Humane Society's Pet Food Assistance Program, which helps poorer families feed their animals. A portion of the food is often delivered along Meals-On-Wheels routes.
"The reason we started the ... program was we found that people were actually giving half of the meals that were delivered to them to their pets," Heather Hayes of the Humane Society said. "They were actually taking half of it and scraping it into their pets' bowls because they would rather go hungry than see their pet go hungry."
The huge donation was dropped off several weeks ago and just in time for the holidays. Shelter staff say they've been going through the bags of dog and cat food quickly.
After winning the promotion, which she was entered into after taking a survey through TD Bank, White was featured in an online video produced by the bank called

I think everyone that has money should go to a dollar store and buy at least one bag of dog food and one bag of cat food and take it to a humane society or animal shelter near them and donate it. Or just one bag of one kind or the other. It will cost 1.06 but it will be SO worth it. I have done this and it's a GREAT feeling and they really appreciate it and the animals have some food. Try it just once. concider it YOUR good deed for that day. I have even bought more expensive dog food then I would have got at the dollar store and donated it and the staff was so pleased to see it. thanks for reading my suggestion. I know some of you might tell me what I can do with my suggestion and that's your choice. Have a good day.
