轆轤による朱泥急須づくりの作業工程です。
常滑焼の特徴といえば朱泥と呼ばれる赤い土を使った器です。
その赤さの理由は、土が鉄分を多く含んでおり、作品を焼き上げる際に酸化焼成することで鉄分が赤くなることにあります。
朱泥には本朱泥と人工朱泥がありますが、現在の主流は、顔料であるベンガラを混ぜ込んだ人工朱泥です。
その場合は焼成前の段階で既に土自体が赤く染まっています。
この動画で使用されているのは現在では貴重な本朱泥です。
実演しているのは、日本六古窯の一つ愛知県常滑焼の窯元「三代目山田陶山」氏です。
This is the process of crafting red clay Kyusu "Teapot" using the potter's wheel technique. A defining feature of Tokoname-yaki ceramics is the use of red clay, often referred to as 'Shudei.' The reason for its red hue lies in the high iron content of the clay, which turns red through oxidation during firing.
There are two types of Shudei clay: natural Shudei and artificial Shudei. The prevalent method today involves mixing artificial Shudei with pigments such as Bengara. In this case, the clay is already tinted red before the firing process.
The clay used in this video is the rare natural Shudei, which is considered valuable in contemporary ceramics.
Demonstrating by "Yamada TOZAN, the third", a potter of Tokoname-yaki, one of the six old kilns in Japan.
