  • In recent years coconut oil has been the new “it” ingredient to hit the retail market. It began to appear in food recipes, the beauty industry’s products and most notably the Natural Hair community. The benefits of this oil were lauded over and over and you would be hard pressed to find a naturalista’s cabinet that didn’t contain a jar of this versatile oil.
Then the “findings” began to appear, and though their were evidence based benefits of this oil, there were also real life experiences of the damage this oil was inflicting on some Natural’s hair. In this video, without getting too scientific, we discuss coconut oil the good and the bad. We also have compiled a “Coconut-Free” products list to aid those of you who must go without for the health of your hair. As we always state, we are not experts in every aspect of the natural hair journey, so we encourage those of you guys who know more than us to add to the conversation and assist with the questions. Grab a pen and notepad and let’s get started.

After years being natural and using products with coconut oil in them and experiencing unexplained breakage and dryness not matter what I did, I finally figured out that my hair is sensitive to coconut oil and I am now on the hunt for coconut oil free products. Everyone raved so much about it thay it never occurred to me that coconut oil was the problem until I heard someone else talk about the same issues I was having I decided to try and eliminate it in my hair care routine. Thank you so much for making this process easier for me. I will probably have to big chop again to get rid of the damage, but at least I now know what the culprit is. Since getting rid of coconut oil in my hair products, my hair is much better, but will still have to cut of many inches. Love you ladies!

I tried to pre-poo with coconut oil once and my hair started falling out in CLUMPS! It was literally coming out from the roots! I learned afterwards that I'm allergic to it, so thank you both for this video.

FYI-#madcurlsfam I did a little research and it seems that we need to listen to at least 30 seconds of the ads (obviously, if they’re shorter, then to the end). According to the website I read, this should increase the income for LoriAnne and TaylorAnne.

I have fine, 2C-3B hair. My 2C portions are High Porosity. My waves dislike Coconut. My curls, lower in porosity, hate Coconut. I have used it as a pre-poo as well as an end sealer and my hair always feels rough, dry and brittle after use. My hair loves Argan and Jojoba. Just thought I would share for comparison purposes. THANK YOU so much ladies, for all the hard work and thoughtfulness!

Thank you for taking the time to help people that can’t use coconut oil in any part of their buddy. I live in Puerto Rico, tropical island, and you can find coconut oil pretty easy. I have friends that use coconut oil as a moisturizer, hair treatment, cooking, loose weight, etc. But I can’t use coconut oil for my hair or asa moisterizer. What it causes? If I use it as a moisturizer my skin will breakup with acne. For the hair, will pull down my hair, no volume at all and acne attack!🤦🏽‍♀️ once again thank you!! You guys are the best

My hair HATES coconut oil. Especially just straight coconut oil. Also doesn't like heavy oils or Shea butter if it's high up in the ingredients. They just coat my hair too much and then it ends up too dry.
But my friend, her hair loves coconut oil. Everyone's hair journey is different.

I am testing the Aussie Curls and Not Your Mothers is next. My main gripe about Aussie Curls stylers, is the lingering, artifical scent. I dont mind scents but I really dislike the strong, artificial, perfume smell, from Aussie Stylers.

      @franceskeller4536 5 років тому +2

Sinndy Morr I completely agree with you on that one. Also, their defrizzing cream is super oily. It’s most likely because of the coconut oil and silicones in it. Not your mothers is better in my opinion lol. Aussie really doesn’t understand curly hair and are just trying way too hard😬

I think a year or two ago Naptural85 did a video on coconut oil free products cause she was having a reaction to it. I don't remember if she went in depth on the reasons that can happen. There was a whole coconut oil is cancelled thing going around after that, but then it died down. I have realized with my hair I can only use coconut oil or a product that contains it, if its it a shampoo or used as a pre-poo and maybe just maybe a deep conditioner. Something that is going to be rinsed out. I can't leave it in my hair for too long or it dies out my hair or causes irritation to my scalp.

I just started using products without coconut oil and what a difference. My hair does love protein, but it seems to me that stylers with coconut oil in it come out fine, but my hair doesn’t last... gets dryer sooner than later..... I am excited to see if it makes a difference over time.... the Maine choice heavenly halo line for the most part has no coconut oil....

The reason for is that I have a problem with yeast on my scalp. And my dermatologist gave me my medicine to cure it and shit and she was like stay away from coconut oil, for sum reason yeast thrive in it. So if I did my treatment and I was cured if I started to use coconut oil and there was just a sliver of yeast on my head I would have another outbreak.

Thank you for this. I have a starting point for possible options. (Can't use castor oil either, thus I already know some of these products I can't use). Coconut oil and the "cocamide"-related ingredients caused my hair to be DRY, kinked and/or matted. For shampoos with cocamidoproply betaine high on the list, they have been drying to my hair (as most shampoos have COCAMIDE-related ingredients). Again, thank you!! 🙌🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽

I probably will never stop saying this but seriously I love y'all!! Y'all are so awesome. I sort of follow this channel though not religiously but honestly some of the things I was trying to research on and such and y'all came all the way through!!! Like wow, I appreciate y'all. Though seriously I'm wondering if some of the coconut derived ingredients does the opposite for some hair. Again, I appreciate this content even though I watched half of it while doing my hair but you bet I'll be watching it again and taking notes of all the products that have no coconut in it. Thank you so much! I think it's wild how so many products have coconuts in it which I'm trying to avoid. I mean it was great for me at first but then my hair was like nah. I have fine strands of hair, low porosity, and thick density so yeah. I'm okay with some products that have coconut oil in it not I wouldn't want to use it too often or have so many coconut stuff in it. Though I would like to try coconut milk, I've heard it's good!

I discovered that I can’t do too much coconut oil. I’m not super sensitive, because when I make my homemade avocado treatments with a tablespoon or two in it I’m ok; but if I use it directly in my hair it definitely acts weird and dries my hair out. I tried the Mane Choice pink lemonade coconut line and it dried my hair out but my son loves it.

Yeah, y'all are lifesaver for real! I appreciate y'all being so thorough about it. The only thing I wanted to add was I don't think Camille Rose rice with Macadamia have coconut in it. I might be wrong though I'll look at it again.
Also, idk if you tried TGIN products yet, but you bet I'll be binge watching a lot of y'all videos, though so far I know the TGIN Green Tea Supermoisy Leave in don't have Cocos Nucifera. Y'all, this TGIN leave in is so moisturizing! They do have a coconut derivatives though but like way in the bottom which I find it to be interesting instead of at the top of the ingredients. My hair loves coconut once in a blue moon. When I first put pure coconut oil in my hair. It was shiny and soft. The next time I used it. No bueno oily and dry at the same time. So I backed off. Tried it again 2 months later Beautiful results tried it after that. No good again. So I tread lightly with it. I don’t avoid it completely. Thank you for all your research. I need protein free products as well at times. I think there are lists out there for that.

I have a love hate relationship with coconut oil lol love to cook and ingest it but gotta be careful with using too much in my hair usually i stay away from it in its natural form for hair... Does anyone else ever notice if they use too much oil of any kind it dries the hair out? Its like less is more for my hair its weird i use to think the more I slather on the better but very little oil works perfect for me. Great job M.A.D Curls!! It behaves similar to protein in my hair which I am protein sensitive. I use it only for prepoo which was actually a game changer.

Cantu has coconut 🥥. I bought a leave-in and the curl activator and at first I wasn’t using it often but now that I do my scalp is a bit itchy. My hair ain’t shiny, it weights it down.
I have low porosity, dry hair and fine hair.

Hi! I am allergic to coconut, tree nuts, and soy (protein). Because my mom was afraid to style my natural hair growing up, I am now accustomed to either getting my hair straightened or wearing box braids. I use Derma E 's shampoo and conditioner (soy and tree nut free), but that even has coconut in it. If you guys have any suggestions on styling creams, hair oils, please let me know!

Hey ladies, great video 💕. I have low porosity hair and I actually like coconut oil whether I’m using it straight up as an oil or if it’s an ingredient in my products. Also coconut oil works great as a prepoo and It can help prevent hygralfatigue.

Some Camille Rose products don't have glycerin but they have 3 or 4 humectants like pectin, sorbitol and aloe vera which pretty much have the same results as glycerin...frizzy, dry hair. I've been testing the Aloe Whipped Butter and Curl Love, they actually work in my hair. I'm glad I found Camille Rose products that work for me.

    • @KLT828

Yes indeed because all of Shea moisture products have glycerine and Taylor ann mentioned the hair milk does not have it but it def has glycerin as a top ingredient.

I am alergic to cocoamidapropyl betaine..... And it's in 99% of the shampoos. My hair started to fall like crazy and my scalp wad sooo itchy... And I started using coconut oil thinking it was going to help obviously it made it worse.... I lost a lot of hair... I had some tests made and found about my alergy. Now it's been a real challenge to find a shampoo without and coconut stuff in it.

Look at y’all educating folks! 😂 Reading ingredients is highly important. My hair doesn’t love or hate coconut oil, its tolerable like Aloe Vera Gel/Juice. If I use too much or use it too often my hair reacts negatively towards it.
