I only discovered the lad after his passing. I have watched and listened to all. I know he was close to God. so after I make heaven and meet jesus and my family, i wanna meet Shane. Heaven will be fun.
As an older lady well four years older than Shane and never interested in punk, I thought, oh my goodness whose this !!!! Then watching documentaries about him I discovered he was very intelligent, his mother and father said he was very reliable. He was with his partner and wife for about 40 years. He couldn't go past a homeless person without giving them a wad of cash., his wife says. He was asked if he thought he was lucky and he said "of course, some people only have a bowl of rice to eat". The Irish music with all the different instruments. Had to admit that my admiration grew for this man.
You should read his book called A furious devotion. It's only out about 2/3 years. It's a great read. I'm only 36 years old and Irish but I'm really into the British 80s music scene. The book gave me nostalgia from a time when I wasn't even old enough to remember or appreciate the musicians around at that particular time. 😊
I lived a 2 min walk from that pub for many years. Although he was in the Dev regularly he was always pretty much sober, friendly and fairly quiet as he also worked part time in a record shop nearby.
Shot pans in...they're in the pub....shane is sat alone at the table theres is about 7 pints of stout and five glasses of wine on said table... Shane's first words spoken? "I'm not particularly into drinking"" Genius. Pure brilliance
Lovely to hear just how intelligent Shane was regarding the structure of the songs. Funny in regard to Summer In Siam and the sax player 'It's Rick, it's definitely not Joey (Cashman) '.
Shane is a living legend! It's so irrelevant If he has teeth or not because he's a fucking great singer. He is very talented because he can play guitar, piano, he can sing , speaking 3 languages and his laugh is awesome! So I'm 16 and I still love the Pogues until the End! Bye now! :)
Very true, and it's really sad because Shane really is a very talented, intelligent, and insightful person, but his heavy drinking always seems to overshadow it in interviews.
@Michael Valensi Now he looks in a really, really bad shape dude and he's only like 62. Almost feeling sorry for him, look up some interviews with him from the last 2, 3 years to see what I mean
I remember in a Smash Hits interview he told the interviewer he was off the drink, the interviewer mentioned the glass of wine in his hand. “Oh that’s not drinking” 😂
Damn and I thought orthodox celts nailed waxies dargle but this is the pogues i want to see lol. Not the same two famous songs UA-cam always suggests to me.
Shane had not become the rambling wreck of a drunk he became known for until the creative differences between him and the band began to emerge in the aftermath of "If I Shall from Grace with God" where the creative direction of the band began to shift during the song writing process for "Peace and Love." Not saying he didn't perform smashed before that, but it got progressively worse around 1988-1990 as he grew weary of touring and contemptuous of the material the rest of the band was pushing on him. Unable to find it in himself to quit, he ramped up the drinking until they could no longer tolerate him and sacked him mid tour in Japan in support of "Hell's Ditch".
His body has certainly broken down and I suspect there’s neurological damage as well as he’s exhibiting tremors particularly in his hands and his speech has become progressively slurred. In more recent interviews he’s admitted to no longer binge drinking and limits himself primarily to wine, but as you said the damage has been done. I don’t think he possesses the capacity to write anymore as he recently lamented his two wishes are to be able to walk again and to be able to write as he once did. Sad.
@@grannysgonerabid7425 yeah of course the alcohol would have damaged his brain a fair amount but the heroin and acid and such really fucked him as u can see comparing interviews across the years. I thought he was doing alright until a couple years ago and now his wife Victoria mary clarke is posting videos of him on her Instagram and no matter whether he is sober or not he isn't really... "there". Not sure how he's alive but eh there's something
@@Realnigga10000 I think there is a semblance of himself left, I just think it's the fact that when he thinks or talks, it's extremely slow. Play the video of him recently talking about Hell's Ditch at like 1.5 speed and it's basically how he used to be, and apparently he's supposed to release an album soon. I honestly have zero idea of what it's even going to sound like
Of course he would! He was a deeply unhappy man and tried to get sober loads of times but couldn't. No one is happy with teeth falling out, smelling, being impotent and shitting and pissing himself
Yeah maybe I should. It´s Saturday and I´m sitting here with a Tullamore in my hand and I feel pretty fine. .I´m not a huge fan of Irish folk music I must confess. I´m more in to synth-pop and stuff like that but for some reason I have always liked The Pogues...Shane is a great song writer...
I love the Pogues and tried to see them, drove f/ Bmore to NYC to see them and they didn't post. I assume cuz o' Mr. McGowan's issue w/ spirits? As a recovering drunk it makes me sad...that somebody so freakin' brilliant gets stuck in the morass of alcoholism.
@WillCovy It is a special by Antoine de Caunes (French) of some kind that was on ABC TV (Rock Arena years ago. Check my early postings for all parts (there are three).
I've just realised that Shane seems to mention that he doesn't drink as much as he used to, this is quite a common thing to say with alcoholics as I still today say it. I saw him play last night, his still as good as he ever was.
I know a few Irish travelers who were born in England, lived in Scotland, lived in America, yet still have a strong Irish accent. Probably because they spend the majority of their time around others with a strong Irish accent.
He's a middle class fraud. He spoke posh as a kid ,invented a cockney accent during punk (complete with his union Jack jacket) then stopped brushing his tombstones and became oirish
***** It's called Parodontitis and it's a very common problem. It's a tartar accumulation under your gums, the tartar is a porous mineral and so becomes the ideal "home" for scores of bacteria, the bacteria slowly chew away your jaw bone around and between your teeth causing them to loosen first and then to fall. The vulgar term for this disease is pyorrhea. Today it is surgically solvable and can be kept under control avoiding to loose all your teeth (or at least retarding this until old age) but just 50 years ago it was the cause for 30-40% of men to use false teeth after age 50. In third world countries it strikes just like here in the past and in fact viewing third world people the first thing you notice is how many men and women are almost toothless. Of course not having a good oral hygiene only speeds up the disease and that's why Shane was toothless by the age of 35.

I literally searched “Shane MacGowan sober” and this came up. I think this is the best I can get lol.

Dude me too!

any chance Shane watched Keith Richards interviews growing up 😅
He was always pissed lol
What a legend. You will be missed, Shane.. very much. 💔
Much like tree's rings, you can date the music by the condition of Shane's teeth.
You can already see his gums all swollen from gingivitis

Wow, a young Shane here. That was awesome. Drunk or not 😊. Both songs. Like that tambourine man too 😀. Thumbs sky high 👍👍👍👍....Lone Wolf :)
I cannot help but adore him.
Shane is still my favorite performer after all those years, and he will always be.
Irish Traditional music fused brilliantly with post punk. Bedfellows. These new second generation Irish musicians took it and made it popular.
Who knew an Irish British mix would end up sounding so good.

Perfection - these live performances.
Love how mischievous he is here. He was once a coherent person. The French love Ireland and we love them.

I saw Mr. Costello at the beginning. What is this clip from?
ZZ Top?
