      compressed air sucks, as it leaves a nasty residue that's supose to be a bitter agent to keep people from huffing it, but stuff stinks, and whatever you spay will stink as well. A good shop air compressor would be the best.

      Based on my experience in cleaning dust and fluff from desktop computer internals with canned air, you'd end up with dead bugs in your face.

    Maybe you got less bugs with the light on, because the light reflecting off the walls attract bugs to walls and not the zapper. Great review.

    • @awesomegaming8617
      @awesomegaming8617 Рік тому +1

      That's the main reason. The second reason likely may be they also attract better to Purple or Blue lights.

  • @erzebet6977
    @erzebet6977 7 років тому +86

    Ok, the bugs were attracted to the light. The problem is the regular bulb is so bright that they don't need to get so close to it. That's why they were all over the wall but not going into the zapper when the bulb was on. That's also why it killed more with the bulb off. Weaker light source means they have to get closer to it so with just the zapper on they are drawn in close enough to get zapped.

      13 likes???? Now here is the truth...Its not how bright....It is the spectrum of light the bugs see, sea, c........People for example can't see in the dark, give them a device called night vision and ...WOW!!!!.... Night vision amplifies the spectrum the humans can interpret,,,, like a computer program being able to decipher Numbers and codes and translates it into a code the eyes.../ sensors of the program/ computer can interpolate, like linear interpolation....That simple!

    Mosquitoes aren’t as affected by bug zappers because they attracted to general areas by light but find their targets by tracking carbon dioxide trails created by mammals exhaling. If you built a bug zapper that dispensed trace amounts of C02 it would be way more effective on mosquitoes.

      In fact some indoor grows have CO2 air supplies to boost growth. This is totally possible.

    Some are getting it wrong in this comments. The white light is so that you can continue to use that light socket to light your area for YOU, not attract the bugs. The UV light, I kept it on through the night in a room due to gnats from our indoor plants, and the population went away in less than two days with two lights in our house. I also used one of these at an Elders house that was infested with fruit flies from not removing fruit remnants in the garbage out of his apartment in time, and it took out 1000's in 3 days! I am not kidding. It just worked. These little gnats and fruit flies are tough to get rid of 100 percent especially in houses with lots of plants, so it is about persistence. I do agree that there is probably scientific research stating that UV light does not attract all insects well, that is why a comprehensive battle plan is needed indoors when battling these little guys.

      I know this is an old post but anyway, having house plants myself I use this trick...
      Leave an open bag on a corner of worktop and put banana skins, tea bags and any sweet fruit skins in it, after a couple of days quickly seal the bag with both hands and take it outside to trash bin.
      This plus quickly, with lid closed, take the small kitchen bin outside to trash.
      I do not lift the trash bag out in the kitchen as any fly's will fly out.
      This works very well for me but must be repeated regularly especially in summer.

    • @taylorreptar7898
      @taylorreptar7898 Рік тому

      @@tr1bes I know this is old, but theres a lot better of a trap you could make just as easy at home. First, take a soda bottle(any will work though one with a narrower top would be best) use a razor or scissors or something to cut the top off(roughly 3 Inches from the top) then pour some homemade mix in the bottom(about 2 or so Tablespoons of Apple Cider/White Vinegar about 1tbsp of Sugar, and a few drops of dishsoap mixed well) then take the top, flip it upsidedown so its like a funnel, and put it inside the bottom. so the flies or gnats will fly into the hole but with it funneled down inside itself, they wont know how to get out. its how any gnat trap is made you oculd buy in the store exept those ones are always itty bitty and cost around $5-$10, this is extremely cheap and most of the ingredients people would already have in their house.
      also, you could make a really amazing fly repelent using a concoction thats pretty similar to the mix used in the gnat trap. just take a spray bottle(over the sink because the reaction could make a mess) first put in 1 Tbsp of Vinegar and 1 Tbsp of Baking Soda for each cup of water you plan to use, over the sink and wait for the reaction to settle, then add the water you need to fill the bottle(usually 1-3 cups), then after all the ingredients are in and have mixed, add a few drops of dish soap and there ya go. an amazing homemade fly repellent

    I had a large zapper and it worked great for two years. Once I had to change the bulb I couldn't find a replacement for it and got rid of it. I used to place it out in the middle of the yard with a small bright led bulb behind it further away both would hang from a garden hanger.
    Around the table I had tiki torches and led strip lights. It worked great! I love surrounded by a wooded area with a large pond on the side of my house 100feet away. That was the best set up I ever had. I woukd also fog the yard once every two weeks. If I don't do all of that you can't sit outside for 10 min without gettibg eaten alive by mosquitoes. The large purple zappers are great and I plan to get another this year. I looked at that bulb two days ago and am glad I didn't go with it. Thanks for the review great job

  • @dm.2023

    7:53 You have to bait them as well. Bug zappers come with a bait strip that you have to stick on to the bottom of the zapper. The bulb warms the bait strip and attracts mosquitos. You should replace the bait strip every six months or depending on how often it's on. Mine is on 24/7 so I replace the bait strip every 2 months

    If you use an air hose hooked to a compressor it will clean better. Also cotton swabs dipped in alcohol will get the bulb grid clean. Just make sure everything is dry.

  • @haveyougotyourtowel

    For much easier cleaning, it should unscrew at the line between the regular light and the white plastic safety shield (like the Black Flag version does that I tried). Mine only got a few tiny bugs in 2 days, whereas fly paper caught that many in 2 minutes! It's really just a lightbulb, and it's so focused one direction that it brings many shadows to the room.

    The problem is the big bright light. The light illuminates the walls, which then act as light sources because they are reflecting the light back (also, it doesn't help that the walls are white, which is the most reflective color). This attracts the bugs to the walls and the white light itself, but the blue is very dull by comparison, so they ignore it. Also, mosquitoes are attracted mostly to carbon dioxide (and body heat, to a lesser degree), so a product that uses carbon dioxide to attract them is likely going to be the most effective thing.

      A little update on the zapplight bulb. I tried it tonight, sat on my porch and it did catch some bugs. I was hoping it would pop pop the bugs like my giant zapper does. You should see this thing it's a buglight and hand held zapper in one. It has a retractable handle and a flashlight. I did mod the circuit so when you flip the main switch on fully the zapper comes on so you don't need to hold it. And it plugs into the mains. and it is fun to watch, makes a hell of a racket but it's music to my ears. I do have a few videos of me frying bugs on this zapper. Search 3700 volt bug zapper on my channel.

    I live in the county and have a BIG zapper you should see the bugs fry on that thing ..some will go on for over a minute. And the smoke and smell.. WOW! That little zapper is ok ish but doubt it would cut it here. It would be packed till it couldn't zap anymore lol. The way it is shaped( I noticed) that it was meant to be put in a downward facing socket so the bugs would fall out . The white plastic on the light bulb side is slanted outward and the other side is flat ( should have made both sides like that ). It might help it out" some" but cleaning is a huge issue . The person in the comments with the canned air had a good idea. Great review!! Your reviews are the best. :)

    I purchased this bulb a year ago. I use it in my bunny habitat: which is an entire room. I leave it in blue light mode/ 24/7; and it works killing fruit flies that can show up around bunnies for some reason.
    When I first got my bunnies; I had a gnat infestation out of no where. I struggled to find a solution. I picked up this bulb at Ace Hardware...and I love it. I keep it on 24/7 in the blue light mode only. It works perfectly for my needs. I use a DollarTree baby bottle brush cleaner to clean it out. Always nasty...but effective.

    I know this was posted a while ago. So I tried using the little brush it comes with to clean it out. I got the same results, it got most of the bugs out but not all. My husband came home with a bigger brush that was flat, it fit perfect and with a little tapping like you did. I got all the bugs out. The only thing i couldn't get off was the burnt residue from the bugs left from the zapper doing its job. I wish I could post the picture of this brush I used instead. It worked wonders I like this product, just I keep the outside light off and use the zapper light only.

    I live in Florida. I love my bulb!! I have a screened lanai behind my house. I have small dogs that I let out often to do business. After only a few minutes of being out they come in with a few mosquitos chasing them. So I always have a few and I live on my lanai! I got this bulb and only use it in blue mode (I have another source of light when I'm outside but if I need extra light it does the job.) I love that it comes with an option! It works well, I always have dead bugs! Works great for a lanai!

      Hate to say it, these types of things tend to attract mosquitoes but rarely kills them. If anything you are killing off all the bugs that are the non parasitic and biting bugs. Like most of the bugs he had in his zapper, they are all the pollen spreading bugs.

    If you have access to a window any cheap window fan that exhausts air out the window sealed with any panel, plastic, foam, wood, cork etc will remove 100% of all contaminants depending on proximity to the intake.
    If you have no window and no duct system that leads outside you can do the same with a flat carbon filter and a foam or a cheap Hepa panel. On the other side of the outtake fans.
    You can make all of that for $20 or less. It can also double as a spray booth, sanding and woodworking, anything that generates particulates that are aerosolized or solids.

    I have one of these and use it on my back porch (I live in Georgia, USA). I get bitten by mosquitoes the second I go outside, so I wanted to try this. This bulb is great for small areas, like a screened-in porch! I think the problem people are having is that the Zapper gives off Ultraviolet light to attract the insects...the LED also gives off Ultraviolet light, so they might be distracted by that. I always use it with the LED turned off but Zapper turned on.

    The top unscrews so you can pull out the bulb exposing the metal wires which makes it a lot easier to clean. You can clean the wires completely that way, and the brush doesn't get damaged.
    I only have a few tiny flying bugs that appear in the summer and when I keep my lights out they go for the light of my computer monitor. The bug zapper takes care of them perfectly. I clean it every two weeks or so and get about 15 little dots. Less bugs to annoy me while watching videos.
    Seriously though... unscrew the casing next time you clean the bulb. Have fun.

    I have had one for a few months now, used to work great and now it seems to be getting weak and you can see the light randomly flicker now. not a whole lot but you can definitely tell. also, with the white led on, the reflection on your white walls is what's keeping the bugs on the walls instead of in the zapper. and as mentioned in previous comments, compressed air is much easier, but be careful of the PSI on what your using so you don't cause any damage and end up shorting it out and burning your house down. But overall, my opinion this is more for in the City living for few small bugs. Regardless, you will need light at night, and turning on the white led just makes them stick to walls, and the blue led doesn't emit enough light to even see where your walking. My best advice, get a 50ft+ extension cord and run a large zapper away from the home to draw them away, hell, run 2 or 3 just for shits and giggles. lol

    Great review, thanks! You should try the bulb in one another light socket like the outdoor style at 0:56... maybe the height will help and maybe some of the bugs will fall out instead of all getting stuck! You could also try cutting out some of the plastic to give moths easier access! I've tried the DynaTrap and it works ok mostly against smaller insects ... it's way more effective against mosquitos if you using the octenol lures but they aren't very cheap and have to be replaced fairly often! Excellent review and very helpful!
    I was curious to see if one of these bulbs/zappers could catch those lone (1-3 every few nights) mosquitoes that manage to get indoors, even with netting installed (mostly by flying in when someone goes on the balcony or out the door).
    I'm now fairly certain it will do the job better than most other options, given the constraints of the rooms where I'd want them. It's also nice that these slot straight into standard light sockets, as I have at least one of those free in both of the rooms I want to protect.
    I'll still check out some other options before purchasing, but this seems like a solid choice for my specific requirements.

    I wish I had seen your review BEFORE I wasted my money. I agree with everything you said ESPEC about the heat issue and brush becoming frayed. It does a fine job attracting smaller bugs that don't bite but I feel I AM the only thing attracting and killing mosquitoes and usually AFTER getting chewed. THANX4SHARING Brother

    6:29 Most likely since the top light Is not on, the bugs arent distracted to that one instead of the zap light and the top light is much brighter so that probably makes the bug go twords the top one and not the zap one.

    The real benefit of this gadget is that you don't need an outlet to plug it into. It's so convenient to just screw it into any standard bulb socket and use. I bought two different brands and they both work pretty good. It's not mosquito season as of this writing but I'm confident they will help control those little bastards all summer long. Although you killed a lot of bugs I think this is mainly for mosquito/biting flies/gnats, not moths. If that's your end-game then yes, I'd get the bigger plug in models, but I think for those of us in the city who want to kick it outside in our backyards, this is one awesome way to control bitey things.

    You're Not Going To Get Big Bugs Because The Wire Grid That Kills Them Is On The Inside Of The Plastic Cage And They Can't Get Close Enough To The Electrical Wire Grid To Touch It And Get Zapped. The Plastic Cage Around The Wire Grid Is Not Conductive. See If Theres A Way To Take The Plastic Cage Off Of It. Also If You Have An Air Compressor And A Blow Gun Just Blow The Dead Bugs Off Instead Of Trying To Clean Them Out With That Tiny Brush. If You Can't Remove The Entire Plastic Cage, Then Just Cut Out All The Pieces Of The Cage Except For 4 Of Them, One On Each Side To Hold It Together Yet Have Big Enough Spaces Around It For Your Big Bugs To Get Into.

    A bug zapper inside your home is a good idea. It can kill the occasional bug that gets in. It would be especially useful with flies and mosquitoes. *But* using any kind of bug zapper outside is a waste. In fact the light will tend to draw more bugs. They will kill a lot of bugs but not many of them are harmful, instead they kill many many beneficial insects along with a couple of mosquitoes.

    Reason why the r was less bugs on the second night is because they see the top light as a heat source so they stay on the top because the bottom has less light on the first night they say the zapper mode as the only light source so they just had to go to it

    Heard they keep the openings small so kids can’t put their fingers in the zapper. Also, other people will cut off some of the white bars so that the larger bugs can make it in.

    I thank you VERY MUCH for this very informative video! I like your teaching / demonstration style. I noticed that Mike H below had an interesting response about using compressed air. I may be tempted to try a 500 watt blower that I have that's designed to replace cans of compressed air for blowing dust out of a computer. I guess I probably should wear goggles to be on the safe side, just in case if bug guts go in almost every which direction. I'm more like you; Often the BEST bug is a DEAD one! As for bigger bugs, I see your point. Using a REGULAR bug zapper, my dad witnessed a big old June bug get in there and get his rear end fried.
    Very interesting video!

I'm taking my daughter and hubby there as soon as vacation is a possibility again and the place you're in looks amazing. Thanks in advance!

      When I go to Maui, I split it into two halves: East and West. East (Hana) is lush and more desolate, while the West (Lahaina) is drier and more touristy. If you're into empty beaches and hiking, go East. If you're into shopping and dining, go West! Either way, I know you'll have a great time.

    I used one from pulse TV for my ceiling light as one of the bulbs. I was concerned with getting rid of those annoying tiny flying bugs that seem to appear every summer. By suing if I had less coming into house. I also plant certain herbs in pots right outside my window and door which is definitely discouraging spiders and other bugs

    Zappers kill the wrong bugs
    Electrocuting bug zappers that use ultraviolet light to attract insects kill beneficial insects, such as beetles and moths, not mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not strongly attracted to UV light, but many pollinating insects are. A key study from some time ago lays it out pretty starkly:
    Frick, T. B. and D. W. Tallamy. 1996. Density and diversity of nontarget insects killed by suburban electric insect traps. Ent. News 107(2): 77-82:
    “Of the 13,789 insects counted, only 31 were biting flies. Nearly half of the insects collected were nonbiting aquatic insects such as caddisflies and midges. More importantly, 1,868 predators and parasites (13.5%) were destroyed within 27 families of predators and nine families of parasitoids.”
    That’s 0.2% of the total insects fried that were actual biting species of flies. The rest were insects important in ecosystem functioning and pollination. Please. Do. Not. Use. These.

      What kills wasps ?

    • @JohnDoe-vf2yo
      @JohnDoe-vf2yo 6 років тому

      Biene Imker Brute force. Or organic pesticides. I think they also make a "deterrent" that doesn't kill but makes them evacuate their nests. You also want to make sure what kind of wasps you are dealing with. If they are cicada killers, DO NOT kill them because they actually control the population of cicadas by laying their eggs in the cicada, giving the wasp larvae food while it pupates. Plus they're extremely docile. Most wasps are if you don't get up in their face.
