Why We Chose A Teardrop Over A Larger RV

  • Welcome to Highway to Hoeftland. In this episode, we share 5 reasons why we recently purchased a Bend Teardrop Trailer over a larger RV. We’ll bring you along for our first shakeout trip to La Pine State Park, just outside of Bend, Oregon.
    Why Buy A Teardrop Trailer?
    Number 1) Affordability
The 5x10 teardrop we purchased was affordable compared to other RVs, trailers, and even other teardrop campers. We added numerous options to our build, such as an extra battery, solar panels, a roof rack, an awning, a side mounted air conditioner, brakes, and more. We ended up paying in the $13,000 range. You could get these trailers for less than that. Our trailer is new, so we will see how holds up, given the affordable price tag. So far, so good. Luckily, the builder is close to where we live and we can easily have repairs done, if needed.
Number 2) Teardrop trailers are easy to tow and maneuver
As you can see, the first thing we immediately noticed and liked about the teardrop trailer is how easy it is to tow and maneuver. We can push it around by hand, if needed. When we towed it this last weekend, it was a breeze. We barely noticed it was behind the truck. That makes travelling less stressful.
    Number 3) Nice design
Another reason we bought this teardrop trailer is because of its appealing design. We like the style and look of the trailer. The interior has a warm and cozy feel, and the exterior of the trailer is the classic aluminum teardrop design that we’ve all seen around for decades.
The one aspect of the design that doesn’t look wonderful is the air conditioner that we had added to the side, but we figured the functionality of the air conditioner was worth adding. Which brings us to our fourth reason why we bought this trailer
    Number 4) Functionality
We can use this trailer in many ways. It’s got most of what we need to get out and camp and explore comfortably. We have shore power if we want it, a sink, a comfortable warm bed, lighting, shelving, doors that lock, screens for fresh air, a fantastic fan, and storage. The trailer has just enough of what we need to function well, and not more than what is needed. We can go to small, rustic campsites or we can go to an RV Park. We can park our trailer in our backyard, it can fit into small spaces, it can be towed down rough roads, under low bridges, along narrow coastal highways, and more. We didn’t have to get a heavier duty truck to tow the trailer and we don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to get out and have more adventures together. The teardrop is also easy to setup and breakdown when we are arriving and leaving our campsite. The overall functionality of the trailer is very appealing to us.
    Number 5: Low maintenance
In the travel trailer world, this teardrop is easy and minimal maintenance. We don’t have to dump waste or winterize. There isn’t much to do, other than grease the wheel bearings occasionally, keep an eye on the tires, wipe down the exterior and keep the bed clean inside. There might not be much else to it, but we’ll keep you posted on what we discover.
So, there you have it. These are our top 5 reasons why we bought this affordable teardrop trailer. We’re excited to get out on the road in the coming weekends and months ahead. We plan to share tips, blunders, adventures, and beautiful discoveries along our journey.
    Thanks for watching!

    Affordability?
$13,000...ooff! That sounds very high. You can pick up a nice Jayco with all the amenities for that price no? Good points otherwise.
Me and my gf managed to find a used 2018 Runaway RangeRunner for $5k. I think we got very lucky.

So happy to find your channel. We camp frequently, and see so many teardrops in the 25K range & above ..hard pill to swallow when you are still without a bathroom & a shower!!! We are leaning towards a set up like yours. I'll be curious to see how your rig holds up to dispersed camping, and how the electric heater works out. Currently we have a platform bed in our 4 runner, but get out in the cold to pee when t's cold is a real bummer, along with inability to sit up , once we are inside the car. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Hi there, Thanks for finding us! We also didn't want to purchase an expensive teardrop without basic amenities like a bathroom. We're still working through the heating challenges and we'll probably need to buy some additional items like a jackery. It's been a learning process. We're definitely having fun with it. Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks! 🙂

@@HighwaytoHoeftland When we first started camping we found a very inexpensive off brand 240 watt battery/charger, and really wish we had just sprung for the 1000 . We burn through power in one day with a 12v frig, and the trees often block our panels, or we don't want to babysit them :)

I’m switching from a SylvanSport GO that I used for five years to a teardrop. Gonna pick it up next month and spend the next ten days camping our way home. I wanted to keep the outdoor experience with a more simplified camp set up along with the hard sided sleep quarters. Very excited.

Hi! We just bought a second-hand teardrop trailer YESTERDAY! We slept it in (in our driveway, lol). Super comfy! Very similar to yours, same size, even same color. Question: do teardrop trailers need to be REGISTERED? INSURED? We’re newbee’s … any advice is appreciated. Thanks so much! … Linda and Tommy, Staten Island, NY.

    • @HighwaytoHoeftland
      @HighwaytoHoeftland  2 роки тому +1

Hi Linda and Tommy, Congrats on your teardrop trailer purchase! Regarding the insurance and registration, each state has different laws. In Oregon, small trailers under a certain weight don't have to be registered. We do have insurance on our trailer. It's not too expensive and provides good peace of mind. We're not sure about NY. You might want to check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles to make sure you are in compliance. Congrats again! You'll have so many fun adventures! 🙂

All of your points are spot on. Don’t forget that teardrops keep your experience closer to nature and they are easy to store, ours fits in a garage.

I completely agree. We’ve had our square drop trailer (MyMiniTrailer Serenity X model), Tilly, since June 2021 and we currently are taking it on its first major road trip from NY to Louisville to New Orleans and back home to NY. That’s over 3000 miles and it’s doing GREAT. Did great camping in 7 NY and CT state parks last summer, too, for over three weeks. These sized trailers are easily the cheapest to purchase, own, maintain, repair, customize, furnish, use, insure, and store. And I’ll argue they are far superior in quality, too, compared with most rVs. They go everywhere and get into anything easily and are fun to use and own. We have Zero regrets and wish you much success with yours, too! PS Be sure to join the TD FB groups; they are great!

HI, Love your choice of trailer. I rented one from Bend Teardrop in August and loved the simplicity of it and my Subaru Forester will tow it. After a lot of thought I ordered one to be delivered in March or April. We live near Salem having just moved from AZ (4 years) and WA (many years). We are both retired looking to explore the PNW. We are coming from a Class C (10 years) and thought we wanted more room so then a Class A (1 year). The Class A was a money pit, very complex machine and always breaking something. I am looking forward to the teardrop. Enjoy you channel and will follow you for your ideas and adventures.

Hi, thanks so much for the follow! I'm glad to learn you're a fellow Bend Teardrop enthusiast.👍 We are having a ton of fun with the teardrop so far. No issues with the trailer, (although we just got it about 3 weeks ago). It seems very solid. I used to travel around as a kid in a class C RV as well. Those were the days. 🙂 Also, welcome to Oregon! Thanks again for your note and feel free to ask any questions about the teardrop. I'm happy to respond. -Kristin

Wow, inflation at it's finest! I bought a brand new 22 foot travel trailer in 2013 for $15K.
I am converting my full size cargo van into a camper van though for quick camping trips. Towing does slow things down.

$15K for a 22 footer sounds like a great deal! The camper van sounds fun. We were thinking about getting a van before we purchased the teardrop, but they're so expensive and we're not good with DIY projects. Happy camping!
