It would make sense plus you can use Sun and Moon as reference because Prof. Kukui was in the championship league when you battle to become champion. Although he is not the first, the player is AND Kukui battles in the Royale similar to Oak in the manga.

revived_ninja it may be that he grew a sense of guilt after seeing how some people such as team rocket used Pokémon as weapons and he dedicated his life from that point forwards to caring for and learning about the nature of Pokémon, saving battling them for the younger generation yet to learn the lessons he has. Just a guess though

Okay guys, hear me out on this, next Pokemon game to come out...is actually just a prequel to ALL of the Pokemon games. Following Prof. Oak's storyline. How he became so interested in Pokemon, how he became such a visionary at his time to create a dex for their information. Leading all up to Oak becoming champion. I just thought that would be pretty awesome. =)
Thanks for showing the levels (66 and onwards, whereas Blue/Gary Oaks levels are up to 65) too of "Oaks team". It looks like the idea in the game we know (just after beating Lance) was supposed to make the game more difficult in some way as a beta version. So the final edition we get is: No Lance is not the Champion its "Blue"/Gary Oak. You must defeat him first. And in the beta no Blue/Gary oak is not the Champion you must defeat the real Professor Oak first to become the Champion yourself.
I wonder if after they were rivals as kids, Agatha began to want more than that as they grew older, and Oak more or less chose Pokemon research over settling down. Then again, Gary is his grandson, so...
Professor Oak Pokemon is probably 1. Charizard : Since Sam (Oak Past Self) using Charmeleon so it not suprising that he owned Charizard during his tenure as Champion 2. Venusaur : Consider Red and Blue choose Charmander and Squirtle. it not suprising that Oak take care the remaining pokemon in his lab (Bulbasaur) and Train it to become a Venusaur and in manga He did evolve the Bulbasaur into a Venusaur. 3. Tauros : Since he was competed with Agatha and winning the Champion againts her is not suprising consider Agatha is a Ghost Pokemon Expert who is weak in defense and Tauros is the strongest Normal type with great ATK 4. Flareon, Jolteon or Vaporeon : in Yellow he owned a Eevee and later Blue/Gary Snatched the Eevee before Oak was about gave the Eevee to Red/Ash and who knows that he probably Owned one of the Eevee Evolution during his youth 5. Exeggutor, Gyarados and Arcanine : The reason i put these three together because in one glitch during Red, Blue, Green and Yellow we can challenge Professor Oak with these Set Up along with Tauros and the remaining Starter (Venusaur) 6. Ursaring : it just a Speculation but Sam was originally from Johto and Ursaring/Teddiursa was also from Johto when Ash travel with Sam to find the pool to heal Celebi they Encounter a suprisingly friendly wild Teddiursa and Ursaring when they lead Ash and Sam to the pool to heal Celebi
I think Oaks starter is Charmander Because in the games you’re red and if chose venusaur and lhis grandson will be choosing Charmander and likewise it’s also for Manga and video game matching (also anime because in the Celebi movie Young Sam Oak has a Charmander line) Dragonite for the mirage movie Taurus because it’s the only normal mon no one uses Atleast for me those three are a must

theyres dozens of reasons that oak could be soumoned to the indigo leauge, and i bet he helpt build the pokemon leauge after the war. and the only reason that i dont think oak was champion was that lance oak and blane were at creating mewtwo during the war.
