You run North Korea. To the people of North Korea, you are their greatest hope and joy. You are their god. But your people are starving. North Korea is not poor. How are you living in luxury if North Korea is apparently so “poor”? The Economics of North Korea.
Like any good dictator, you know your rule is only as good as your peoples’ belief in your goodness and power. You have to control every single little piece of information that goes into their heads.
The goal is for everyone to be like those new animals on the farm, with no idea what life was like before the revolution, before Kim Il-Sung. Sure the first generation might not be too submissive because they know this isn’t set in stone. But once you get to the second generation, the third generation - the reign of the Kims will be all they know - and they really will think you are a god.
To successfully run such a utopia, you need to make sure every member of the population believes your story, and your story of the world outside. Everything in North Korean education is brainwashing.
For most North Koreans, Americans aren’t even human. They’re cold blooded monsters who kill and destroy everything they come across. And to continue your brainwashing you go just a few steps further. You decide everything for them. But that’s not enough. The real control point is keeping people hungry.
A person who is constantly hungry, the only thing that will be on their mind is where they’ll get their next meal. Contrast that with a well-fed pleb - they’ll have time to think about unproductive things like the meaning of life, the pursuit of happiness, is my dear leader really a God? Things that threaten your power! So it’s very simple - keep. them. hungry.
As the Supreme Leader of North Korea, you are the world’s foremost example of how a dictator can be the god of the 21st century. Those in the West take freedom for granted. Freedom is hard. Freedom requires responsibility. It requires you to think for yourself, to stand on your own two feet. So to an extent, there’s a part of humanity that naturally wants to be ruled.

@@oldmandoinghighkicksonlyin1368 yeah the people revolt. But usually that has more to do with oppression rather than wanting responsibility. After a coup you usually have a regime that is the same as the old in everything but name.
The people whi actually want freedom in a revolution usually lead it and have taken responsibility for others. The masses usually just care about having a carefree life. This is why people eventually stop voting in an established democracy.
As already said: relying on the masses to carry your idea is a death sentence. There will always be a point where the majority takes the status quo for granted.

    • @oldmandoinghighkicksonlyin1368
      @oldmandoinghighkicksonlyin1368 3 роки тому +9

@@miniaturejayhawk8702 Yes, no one immediately after a revolution is instantly granted the status of a free citizen -- there is terrible strife often worse than before because now you've added instability into the mix. However, after a few generations, if the security of the nation improves, you start to see the seeds of democracy taking root. The French Revolution would be a pretty good example of this. After the 'coup' you had 20 years of instability and war, but then you had liberty and a future free from the excesses of the nobility and an improvement in quality of life.
There's not much good that comes from any transition period. And requiring vigilance to maintain a democracy is also difficult, as you said apathy is an easy answer especially if you feel powerless in your society. However, the pursuit of the ideal is the goal. America may not be as democratic as it once was, but many European nations are better off now than they've ever been because they've fought for and defended their ideals.
These other democracies also properly educate each new generation to protect against any backsliding to the era before liberal democracies. It's a lesson that was learned the hard way and paid for with the lives of millions, so greater emphasis is placed on the maintenance, unlike America which has faced no real threat to its existence nor does anyone in living memory possess the knowledge of a time of dictatorship.

The US is a republic not a democracy and definitely freer than Europeans in term of individual liberty. Europeans have never fought against dictatorship, because they have been demanding more and more welfare from the states.

I can't honestly argue with her last statement. My time as a conscript was one of the easiest I ever had. Sure, there was way too much physical activity for my liking and sleep was sparse at times and we were yelled at all the time, but at least you didn't need to think about anything. Just listen and act based on what you heard.
(I was kind of in a daze after being dumped a few months prior, so it was actually somewhat of a good timing for me. No need to think nor decide meant that there was plenty of time to self-reflect)

The rule that you should keep your society a little hungry is the same, from a moral viewpoint, as the theory, that most big corporations use, that an employee should always be a under some amount of stress. Both are meant to keep them productive and not thinking about rebelling, while being harmful to their health and just evil.

Pretty sure that I've seen almost every Yeonmi interview. She was then, and remains to be a sobering check on reality, to hear how difficult and confusing 'freedom' is from the mouth of an honest narrator.
Most leftists in America will say anything and everything to avoid the words "freedom terrifies me".
They'll talk about race, about violence, care and fairness, but we can all see what it's really about.
I applaud Yeonmi for her bravery, while for honesty, I salute her.
It takes a special kind to walk willingly into a life of decision making, responsibility and self-reliance when the alternative is so simple-and to choose to be human.. when one could have lived fully as the master's dog, perhaps never full, but always assured its scraps.

Other DPR Korea defectors have complained about her. Being a DPRK defector is a huge grift. You're instantly granted fame and payed to sing like a canary.

@@disregardtyrants4801 my best guess is that she worked a cushy job in the city and doesn't actually know how things work in the DPRK. She talks about bodies strewn everywhere, left to rot. Even the most brutal regime would still send soldiers to clean up the bodies.

Even without hearing confirmation from other dprk defectors, I had a feeling that Yeonmi was spinning some pretty tall tales. However, I cannot put blame on her too much. There is certainly a general consensus that citizens are conditioned to a greatly warped sense of honor & loyalty, where everything is tied to the Kims. Once you are free from them, then what is left? When going from a government where your own mind is treated as property of the state, to a government that not only allows you to speak, but financially incentivizes saying sensational things, would it not be understandable for some to cave to those temptations? I don’t think it’s right to twist the truth and smear the credibility of all others who speak out, but I can understand why she chose to.

our brains are 2000 years old survival machines and humans will always choose comfort over discomfort, and to strive we always need to be aware of our decisions and do the uncomfortable stuff.

It's sad how true the statement, people would rather be cared for really is. I meet a lot of people who don't share the mindset of work good jobs to get ahead in life. It's "Walmart should pay enough to live!". Entry-level jobs should take care of them. Please make a part 2 to this!
