- Hi Art Family!
Just a headsup this is the last day to sign up for my Art toolkit watercolor class: arttoolkit.com/learn/prepare-...
$50
And the last weekend to sign up for my "watercolor from the ground up" class starting this Tuesday. Email me if interested or check out more info: www.jaredcullum.com/events
This video was shot by "sometimes island" on Kodiak Island in Alaska. I believe that is just a local phrase for it because sometimes you have access to it and sometimes you dont. While I painted the water from Women's bay crept closer by the minute and I had to deal with freezing temperature but I had a great time. My lovely hosts were having a snowball fight behind me and had a great day hanging out around the island.
This was this months Patreon demo if you'd like to see the full footage with voice over describing process.
Thanks for watching! I'll thow out a gouche video next week to break up all the ice and snow you've been seeing here. :)
If you're curious about the Biggest Art Challenge- It is still on it's way to me. I believe it may be stuck in customs but it is on the way and I have an idea in mind so it should take too long once I have it here. Thank you so much for your patience. Feel free to check in with me anytime on progress.

I found your channel through Marco Bucci and the Ten Hundred Art collaboration. I'm glad I subscribed!
Well I really appreciate you stopping by and sticking around. Thank you. :) I'm so excited to be a part of that! I have an idea together. I'm just waiting on the painting to clear customs and get here. When it does I will be able to just go for it.
Great I don’t know how I’ve missed 3. Videos but I did catching up
Hi Jared, thank you for this demo, you make it look so simple. it is inspiring!
Thank you, John :)
Absolutely Beautiful, Jared! I live in the state of WA, and I've visited AK twice- Such Gorgeous country! Thanks for sharing!
Thanky ou :) That's so cool!
Love your delicate but expressive style👍😀🌺
Thank you so much 😀
Beautifully done! Made me smile the whole way through. Man, I'd be shivering pretty bad, though, I think. Ha, ha.
It was really cold haha but I was so inspired it didn't bother me. I haven't been able to travel out there before so everything was such a wild adventure for me.
great work as always Jared, thank you
Thank you :)
Wow this was magical to watch come together. Though boy, my hands would freeze off. I have such a low tolerance for cold plein air but I've tried.
Thank you so much for watching! :)
I love everything about the way this was created, Jared - it's lovely. . Thanks so much for sharing your endurance out there in the cold and your wonderfully creative skill. ... Can't wait to see more - Cheers - and stay warm up there ;)
Thank you! :) thanks for watching
Beautiful ❤
Thank you :)
Thanks for demonstration....For me it cames out ,what a needle-point brush can do.And what a sable watercolour brush is good for.
Greetings from Cologne/Germany
I tried to make winter plein work. The last two vids you made make me feel like a weak house cat. Haha
hah :) Well- There's nothing wrong with painting from a car or a cafe. :)
@@JaredCullum haha, so true
Nicely done. How did you keep your hands and the paint/water from freezing? I’ve tried winter painting with great failure. And you’re painting where winter lives.
For most of my sketching up there I wore a thermal sock with a hole in it to keep my hand warm and also had glove and boot warmers loaded. In this particular window it was between 20-30 so it wasn't just turning to ice instantly like it was other paintings I did. The weather swung really drastically from super frigid to just kinda cold so some times I would have windows that weren't too bad without gloves.
Hi Jared! I took your class with Art Toolkit -- it was excellent! Can't wait to rewatch it! Thank you! Would you mind sharing the brushes that are in this video? I want to try the smashing technique for trees but none of my brushes stay splayed out. That red brush also looks very interesting! Thanks again.
So cool! Thanks for taking the class! :) I’m using quill mops on this. I use squirrel mop brushes for a lot of what I do and sable. Unfortunately they’re pretty expensive but they do splay out well. A size 4 or 5 quill is a good all around. Sometimes you can get them cheaper on eBay. I like isabeys brushes a lot. A sable would splay out well too but may be more expensive depending on size. If you devote one brush to it it will get rougher and rougher as you go which is a good thing for that kind of texture and thinking.
That red brush is an Alvaro castagnet branded brush. He sells them on his website. He has blends now that are a little less expensive. They’re nice though. No complaints on the ones I have from them. I think NEEF manufacturers them.
@@JaredCullum Thanks so much! Will check them out.
Absolutely gorgeous 🥰 I see why you were chosen next for the Collab 💜💜💜 I can't wait until you get home and start working on it.. but, in the meantime, how is the trip?! It looks unbelievably inspiring!
Thank you for commenting. Feel free to check in on the collab on here. I don't want people to feel left out. It's supposed to arrive today! I believe it was hung up in customs. I have been working on my idea in the meantime so that when I get it I can go right to work. Shouldn't be long once I get it in the mail. I'd like to have it done end of this month or early next if need be. I don't want to keep people waiting. My illustration schedule is a little crazy right now though. But... I only have like a 6"x4" spot to paint haha so how long could I take haha
@@JaredCullum honestly, I've been an artist my whole life and I'd have a difficult time deciding where and what to do lol it's certainly not an easy task. There's absolutely no rush! I'm sure whatever you do and when you do it will be worth whatever time it takes. The world seems to be set for instant gratification sometimes but I think artists and those who enjoy art understand things take time.. enjoy your time and take however much you need 😊
It looks like you're not using your modified EasyL anymore. I'd love to see a video on what setup you're using now. :)
This was my mini travel easel I made a video about recently with my art tool kit stuff- that box is too big to haul out there. :) I ended up trading a friend for a Dan Marshall field easel. It’s very similar to the Easyl I adapted.
@@JaredCullum Ah, I missed the video about this easel, but I'm really interested to hear what you think of the Dan Marshall easel - I've been wanting to get one, but he's not taking orders right now.
