As a Forex educator myself, these are my thoughts on the ATR. The ATR shows you the strongest trend when it already over, and it shows you a trend is starting long after it's begun. The way I look at it is if you use the ATR, you are essentially chasing the market. I know people "say" they like it, but I find it to be as useless as any indicator can be. Your targets will be way to big and unreachable when the market slows down, but your stops will be way too tight when the trend is starting. Use the ATR on a demo account for a while and eventually you are going to start seeing the same thing.
I follow Russ' strategies and he knows what he is doing, as does ForexSignals Tv. That's the beauty of Forex trading. There are so many different ways to approach it, and still be successful. All profit to you Folks!

Why do you use 14 periods for ATR? i know its standard but surely you should consider the timeframe you are trading, and the average length of your trade? If on average im in a trade for 15 minutes, should i really calculate ATR going back more than 15 minutes?
Ive been trading pre race betfair markets for years, so I get whats going on with forex trading, the problem I have at the moment is trying to work out the software, have you a video for instance on , how to physically put on a stop loss, how to set a trading out target profit and how to scale out. I would really appreciate that, thanks

Question: if the ATR "tracking line" flattens out in the middle of it's range, plateaus - so to speak- as the example seems to show @ 06:39, would that just indicate a consolidation period with a high range? or can that not happen? edit 2nd question...
That's not how the ATR is calculated mate. There is a slight but crucial difference which matters for practical reasons. A bit misleading to make it look so simple when it's absolutely not

As a Forex educator myself, these are my thoughts on the ATR.

The ATR is literally the single best indicator in forex trading. I'd argue it's actually ESEENTIAL in every single traders strategy.
Why are you trading during periods of low volatility anyway? The ATR isn't used to identify trends, it's a volatility indicator.
Go find an indicator that can help you with identifying trends, that's not the job of ATR.

I use the ATR Value one candle back because the current candle did not close yet so the range of the current candle is not yet a finalized.
say, two-magnitude/two-factor ATR as opposed to two-ATR stop. better to align with correct terminology, just so everyone's on the same page...
